How About?

Jeremy posted this as a Comment but it’s very interesting and might lead to a lively discussion?

“Sometimes I try to sell the idea of adjusting the number of wickets available in the 2nd innings, either due to dead pitches or rain curtailing play, to make dull draws less likely.

Maybe we could revert to 3 day cricket, yet still have ties 🙂 , if we did the opposite – limit the first innings to 5 or 6 wickets? It wouldn’t turn out any fewer Test ready batsmen, and might make for much better cricket. If nobody is watching Cult cricket, why don’t they let us organise it so everyone enjoys it? Who knows where it might lead?!”

Thanks Jeremy

Three day games at their best…pitches to give both bowlers and batsmen a chance, scores probably somewhere in the region 250-300 and a game where the advantage goes from one side to the other, more than once. A result with a margin of 20-30 runs or two wickets say. Ties welcome.

The idea of reducing the number of wickets takes a bit of getting used to, hard to guess what effects it would have, but in a way it is I suppose a red ball variation on reducing the number of overs for rain in limited overs matches. If rugby does penalty tries why not do penalty wickets?

How about having a nice afternoon watching the ladies play.
I have spent another wonderful afternoon at Arundel Castle Cricket ground watching Southern Vipers beating Yorkshire Diamonds to go directly into the final (no semi-final required) at Hove next Friday. Well done Vipers!

Yes well done indeed and thanks John. I’ve had an afternoon by the sea watching the ladies play too – I’ve been at the Victorious Festival on Southsea Common including Lady Leshurr with a mix of reggae, rapping and the like, and Janet Ayres with a taste of bawdy jazz and music hall songs. All rather groovy – and I was able to miss England’s inept performance in its entirety.
