Grants.gov Streamlines Navigation for a Smoother User Experience

We know that efficiency makes all the difference when it comes to researching, publishing, and searching for funding opportunities.

But over time, as new resources and content have been added, the Grants.gov header navigation menu has grown more complex—sometimes making it harder to locate what you need. A few modifications will address this.

In the coming months, Grants.gov will release an update focusing specifically on the top (header) navigation menu. The update will make it easier to find key resources by:

  • Reducing duplicated links and pathways
  • Minimizing clicking and scrolling among high-traffic pathways
  • Organizing information in a more intuitive way
  • Consolidating related content into clearer groupings
  • Aligning with federal standards for web design

Assistance Listing Format Update for Grants.gov

Grants.gov is pleased to announce an upcoming update to the Assistance Listing format, shifting from numeric digits to alphanumeric program code, which will give agencies more flexibility for future listings.  Existing Assistance Listing numbers will not change.

Currently, the assistance listing number is made up of a two-digit agency number, a period, and a three-digit program code (such as 31.123). Going forward, the two-digit agency number will not change. However, the format of the three-digit program code will begin to use alphanumeric characters in March 2026.

For example, in addition to existing identifiers (such as 31.123)—where the last three characters were strictly limited to numbers—Grants.gov will also support identifiers of the form 31.A1A, which include letters. This change increases the range of possible listing numbers, enabling more supported programs without increasing the number of characters.

Please note: This change may require action from System-to-System (S2S) users. Please check your inbox for suggestions to continue using Grants.gov efficiently while this update is being incorporated.

2 RESTful APIs Are Now Available for System-to-System Users

At Grants.gov, we strive to accommodate real-world applications and make it as easy as possible to connect with any funding opportunities for which you may be eligible.

One way we do that is by providing an extensive list of web services for applicants and grantors to perform Find and Apply functions using our System-to-System (S2S) interface, which uses SOAP/XML-based technologies.

S2S users can integrate the Grants.gov web services into their existing grant management system, providing a more seamless experience for their own staff.

Recently, we extended our services by developing two new RESTful APIs. We’re excited to share them and explain a little about their functionality.

A Quick Guide to Importing Grants.gov Data into MS Excel with an XML Extract

Grants.gov has been undergoing a series of changes to improve the overall user experience. Some functionalities may be temporarily unavailable following our October release. Our team is working to re-establish these functionalities as quickly as possible.

If you’ve been relying on the “Export Detailed Data” functionality and found it temporarily unavailable, you can still get what you need into a spreadsheet software. In this blog post, we’ll walk you through the essential steps to extract and load an XML (Extensible Markup Language) extract of Grants.gov data into MS Excel, so that you can obtain the data you need in the meantime. This process may vary slightly depending on your specific version of Excel, but the general steps should remain consistent. Other data tools may have similar XML import features.

While our October 2023 release brought you a new look and feel, we are aware that some features still need attention. To address these issues and make your experience even better, we will be rolling out a series of releases over the next few months.

Experience the Improved Grants.gov!

The Grants.gov web interface will be improved to provide a more intuitive and responsive user experience with upgraded security and enhanced navigation. The website will align with the United States Web Design System (USWDS), a federal standard to provide accessible and mobile-friendly websites to all users. It will be clearly identified as an official U.S. government website with a banner at the top denoting it as such. While Grants.gov content will remain the same, it will feel more user-friendly, fresh, and modern.
