Welcome to the Graduate School
The Graduate School at UMBC leads and directs the university’s graduate education enterprise, working with departments, schools, and colleges on the development and administration of graduate education as a critical component in the transmission of new knowledge, research, ideas, and scholarship across the university. An R1 designation from the Carnegie Foundation means that UMBC is in the top tier of research universities nationally (doctoral research university with very high research activity, R1). UMBC recognizes that success as an R1 institution depends upon the ability to prioritize graduate education, research, and well-being as central to the academic mission.
UMBC currently offers more than 80 master’s and doctoral degree programs through the Graduate School, in partnership with its three colleges and three schools. Additionally, UMBC offers 23 graduate certificate programs. Graduate students can earn graduate degrees at both the main campus and UMBC’s campus at Shady Grove.
The Graduate School has four units to serve students: Recruitment & Admissions; Pathways, Progressions, and Graduation; Academic Advocacy and Professional Development; and Fiscal Affairs and Operations.
Graduate students will find an exciting environment for meeting the challenges of advanced study at UMBC, a major center for graduate education and research in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. corridor. Young and dynamic, our university is small enough to provide personal attention, yet large enough to provide state-of-the-art facilities and world class faculty.
