GIWPS Research
Our research focuses on building the evidence-based case for what we know to be true—that women are pivotal to preventing conflict, achieving peace, mitigating climate change, and building more prosperous societies.
The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS) produces policy-oriented research, combining rigorous scholarship with practical tools and real-world insights to make the data-driven case for inclusive approaches to peace and security. Our research program is shaped by the priorities of women on the frontlines of conflict and crisis around the world and grounded in evidence-based analysis designed to influence global policy and practice. Through reports, policy briefs, indices, and toolkits, GIWPS emphasizes a holistic approach that addresses interconnected issues such as conflict, economic empowerment, climate fragility, masculinities, and diversity in governance.
Our flagship research initiatives like the Women, Peace and Security Index, the Women, Peace and Security Conflict Tracker, and the Women, Peace and Security Survey, provide policymakers and practitioners with data-driven insights into women’s inclusion, justice, and security around the world. Methodologically, GIWPS employs mixed approaches—quantitative indices, qualitative case studies, and field research—to capture the complexities of women’s experiences in conflict-affected regions. The Institute adopts a collaborative approach, developing projects in partnership with women leaders, governments, international organizations, and academic institutions to ensure impact and relevance.
GIWPS is committed to producing research that reflects the realities of women impacted by armed conflict, while also shining a spotlight on their leadership in peace and security efforts. Our research program is distinguished by rigorous, data-driven insights that are translated into actionable recommendations aimed at transforming how policymakers, institutions, and practitioners understand and promote the role of women in achieving peace and security.
