Priority Countries

Today, the world is in crisis. We are experiencing the highest number of active conflicts and refugees worldwide since World War II. These active conflicts are compounded by long-term challenges that undermine peace and stability, from under development and democratic backsliding to climate change and natural disasters. Tens of millions of civilians face catastrophic impacts, and women and girls are uniquely affected. According to the United Nations, approximately four times more women and children were killed in armed conflicts from 2023-2024 than during 2021–2022.

Women peacebuilders worldwide know that even amidst the most dire conflicts and atrocities, steps can be taken to build peace, protect civilians, prevent escalation, support recovery, and promote long-term stability. The international community must listen to them.

The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security works with women in countries in crisis to identify risk factors and warning signs, understand local dynamics, analyze opportunities to reduce conflict and promote peace, and recommend actions that a wide range of actors can take in specific countries to advance peace and security.

The Women, Peace, and Security Conflict Tracker monitors global armed conflicts for developments impacting women.
