Avoid leaving persistent session tokens behind in admin context - #6436
Conversation
The admin context called wp_generate_auth_cookie() twice without a token, which made core create and store two new sessions for the admin user on every command run in that context (e.g. every `wp plugin` or `wp theme` command since auto context became the default). Create a single session token, share it between both auth cookies and destroy it again on shutdown. WP_CLI::add_wp_hook so the token cleanup runs at a priority later than the
default, allowing other shutdown callbacks to use the admin session before
$manager->destroy($token) executes.

Fixes wp-cli/extension-command#562
Problem
Context\Admin::log_in_as_admin_user()calledwp_generate_auth_cookie()twice (forauthandsecure_auth) without passing a$token. In that case core callsWP_Session_Tokens::create()each time, so every command run in the admin context saved two new 24h sessions for the admin user. Since--context=autobecame the default, that includes everywp plugin …/wp theme …command, so cron jobs quickly pile up hundreds of "unknown" sessions.Fix
WP_Session_Tokens::get_instance( $user_id )->create( $expiration )and pass it to bothwp_generate_auth_cookie()calls.shutdownhook.The session still exists while the command runs, so
wp_validate_auth_cookie()and anything else that checks the session token keep working. Nothing is left behind afterwards.I went with this instead of a non-persistent
session_token_manager. That filter would apply to the whole process, so commands such aswp user session …run with--context=adminwould read and write an in-memory store instead of the real one.Tests
Added a Behat scenario to
features/context.feature. It checks that the session is valid during an admin-context command, and that the admin has 0 stored sessions afterwp plugin list,wp theme listandwp --context=admin eval ''.Generated by Claude Code
