DocParser::get_param_desc() and DocParser::get_param_args() looked for --<key>=, so a parameter declared as [--<key>[=<value>]] never matched: the character after the name is [, not =.

The YAML block of such a parameter was therefore never read, which silently dropped its default, options, deprecated and sensitive entries even though wp help printed them, and left --prompt and the parameter-error output without a description.

Match both spellings through a single shared pattern.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Command parameters can now accept optional values, such as --volume or --volume=loud.
    • Optional-value parameters support documented defaults and allowed options.
    • Bare flags remain supported when no value is provided.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved parameter matching prevents similarly named options from being confused.
    • Invalid option values now produce a clear error and a failing command status.
    • Deprecated parameters with optional values are recognized consistently.

`DocParser::get_param_desc()` and `DocParser::get_param_args()` looked for
`--<key>=`, so a parameter declared as `[--<key>[=<value>]]` never matched:
the character after the name is `[`, not `=`.

The YAML block of such a parameter was therefore never read, which silently
dropped its `default`, `options`, `deprecated` and `sensitive` entries even
though `wp help` printed them, and left `--prompt` and the parameter-error
output without a description.

Hello! 👋

Thanks for opening this pull request! Please check out our contributing guidelines. We appreciate you taking the initiative to contribute to this project.

Contributing isn't limited to just code. We encourage you to contribute in the way that best fits your abilities, by writing tutorials, giving a demo at your local meetup, helping other users with their support questions, or revising our documentation.

Here are some useful Composer commands to get you started:

  • composer install: Install dependencies.
  • composer test: Run the full test suite.
  • composer phpcs: Check for code style violations.
  • composer phpcbf: Automatically fix code style violations.
  • composer phpunit: Run unit tests.
  • composer behat: Run behavior-driven tests.

To run a single Behat test, you can use the following command:

# Run all tests in a single file
composer behat features/some-feature.feature

# Run only a specific scenario (where 123 is the line number of the "Scenario:" title)
composer behat features/some-feature.feature:123

You can find a list of all available Behat steps in our handbook.

Thank you!

Looks like we haven't used this particular format in our own commands, which is why this was never encountered. Looks like a reasonable thing to support.

WP-CLI now validates `options` for optional-value flags such as
`[--porcelain[=<field>]]` itself (wp-cli/wp-cli#6410), so the
command-level check is unreachable. Update the scenario to expect the
framework's error message.
