Summary

Follow-up to #22719 and #22725: precise types instead of any (EXPECTED_ANY) across lib/, so the type checker catches more mistakes.

EXPECTED_ANY in lib/
before 304
after 180

Main areas: the loader runner's callbacks and results (27 → 10), constant-evaluation values in the syntax printer (78 → 39), serializer generics, stats JSON values, comparator caches and placeholder casts.

Public type changes in types.d.ts:

// before
type StatsModule = KnownStatsModule & Record<string, any>;
declare interface DependencyConstructor { new (...args: any[]): Dependency; }
// after
type StatsModule = KnownStatsModule & Record<string, StatsJsonValue>;
type DependencyConstructor = abstract new (...args: never[]) => Dependency;
  • The 14 Stats* types hold JSON-like values in their extra fields; reading a custom field now needs narrowing.
  • DependencyConstructor and serialization's Constructor accept any class but can't be called with new (they are only used as keys). tooling/generate-types.js now emits an abstract construct signature as a type alias, since an interface can't express it.
  • ObjectSerializer and register are generic, so an inline serializer gets the instance type; buffersSerializer, SerializerMiddleware defaults, the parseJson reviver and the deprecated throwing getters (void) are typed.

What remains is mostly bags plugins extend (BuildMeta, BuildInfo, AssetInfo), user-defined options, and values that can be anything (thrown values, console args, module exports). JSDoc and casts only; no runtime change.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

refactor

Did you add tests for your changes?

No, types only; the lint:types* projects (including test/ and module tests) check them, and the existing loader runner, printer, stats and serialization tests pass.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No runtime change. Type-level: code reading a custom field of a stats object, or a field of buffersSerializer's result, now needs narrowing.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

Claude Code wrote the types (with parallel agents per area) and ran lint and tests; I set the direction (precise public types, no unknown, abstract constructor types) and reviewed the result.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Refined type information across stats output, loaders, serialization, parsing, and dependency handling.
    • More specific types provide clearer guidance in editor tooling and improve static checking for supported APIs.
    • Runtime behavior is unchanged.

Type the loader runner, constant evaluation in the syntax printer,
serializer generics, stats JSON values, comparator caches and
placeholder casts. EXPECTED_ANY in lib/ goes from 304 to 180.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR narrows JSDoc and generic types across webpack modules, including loaders, serialization, stats, and JavaScript syntax processing. It also updates type generation for abstract constructors. Most changes preserve runtime behavior; the syntax parser changes how it processes typed AST children.

Changes: Type refinements

Layer / File(s) Summary
Abstract constructor typing
tooling/generate-types.js, lib/Compilation.js, lib/util/makeSerializable.js
The generator now recognizes and emits abstract constructor signatures. Related constructor typedefs use abstract constructors with constrained parameters.
Loader pipeline types
lib/loaders/LoaderRunner.js, lib/loaders/loadLoader.js, lib/module/NormalModule.js
Loader results, callbacks, options, contexts, and resource processing use narrower types. Loader loading and NormalModule annotations use loader-specific types.
Serialization type contracts
lib/serialization/ObjectMiddleware.js, lib/serialization/PlainObjectSerializer.js, lib/serialization/Serializer.js, lib/serialization/SerializerMiddleware.js, lib/util/serialization.js
Serializer constructors, middleware defaults, contexts, and serializable values use more specific generic types. Cleanup casts use never where values are cleared to undefined.
Stats data and printer types
lib/stats/DefaultStatsFactoryPlugin.js, lib/stats/DefaultStatsPrinterPlugin.js
Stats output fields use recursive JSON value types. Printer registrations and child-count inputs use explicit stats and printer types. Comparator cache types are narrowed.
JavaScript syntax and evaluation types
lib/javascript/syntax-parser.js, lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, lib/javascript/jsMinify.js
The syntax parser handles typed AST nodes and children. The syntax printer defines evaluated-value types and narrows types across constant evaluation, built-in lookup, and optimization helpers.
Core module type refinements
.changeset/400-precise-public-types.md, lib/cache/PackFileCacheStrategy.js, lib/config/defaults.js, lib/debug/ProfilingPlugin.js, lib/define/DefinePlugin.js, lib/dependencies/*, lib/dll/*, lib/externals/ExternalModule.js, lib/fs/FileSystemInfo.js, lib/graph/*, lib/hmr/JavascriptHotModuleReplacement.runtime.js, lib/index.js, lib/optimize/ModuleConcatenationPlugin.js, lib/rules/*, lib/util/comparators.js, lib/util/deprecation.js, lib/util/parseJson.js
Core annotations replace broad types with narrower contracts for configuration, dependency parsing, profiling, cleanup, rules, utilities, and JSON parsing. The Changesets entry records a patch release.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2244 test(s), 8879 asset(s), 100 emitted nothing.

Replace EXPECTED_ANY with LoaderResultArgs for ProcessResource.

AGENTS.md reserves EXPECTED_ANY for values that can genuinely have any type. The default processor, NormalModule, and the custom test processor all return values covered by LoaderResultArgs.

The callback type can use LoaderResultArgs, and the cast at iterateNormalLoaders is then unnecessary. Keep separate handling for options.resourceBuffer, because LoaderResultArgs[0] also permits string, null, and undefined, while resourceBuffer is declared as Buffer | null.

Update the ProcessResource callback type to use LoaderResultArgs instead of
EXPECTED_ANY, then remove the now-unnecessary cast in iterateNormalLoaders. Keep
resourceBuffer handling separate so its Buffer | null type remains intact.

Merging this PR will regress 2 benchmarks

⚠️ 108 benchmarks spent significant time in system calls

System calls cannot be consistently instrumented, so they are not included in the measure, which understates the real cost. Please switch to the Walltime instrument to accurately measure system calls.

Measurement and system calls

ℹ️ 30 benchmarks have no flame graph

The flamegraph could not be generated because too much time was spent in runtime internals, making the visualization not useful for performance analysis.

⚠️ Different runtime environments detected

Some benchmarks with significant performance changes were compared across different runtime environments,
which may affect the accuracy of the results.
