Summary

Follow-up to #22357. The @custom-media read-ahead re-walked all rules once per step of a chain, so a chain written last-to-first was quadratic; CodeRabbit flagged this. Rules are now ordered so each follows the names it reads, and the last rule stating a name is kept, so they are walked once. A 200-rule reversed chain drops from about 2.4 s to 42 ms, with byte-identical output. The pending 037-css-supports-conditions changeset already covers this unreleased feature.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

perf

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes, in test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js: a chain written last-to-first, a name read through the last of two rules, and a rule stating no name.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • CSS minimization now provides separate options for resolving custom media queries and custom selectors. The existing combined option remains available but is deprecated; it enables either feature unless its separate option is explicitly set.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Custom media queries and selectors now resolve nested and chained references, including definitions that appear after their uses. Multiple definitions use the last definition, and resolved selector references are represented as :is(...).
    • Cyclic, unknown, invalid, or unsupported references remain unresolved. Unknown, invalid, and unsupported custom media references are reported at their use sites.

Order the rules so each follows the names its query reads, keeping the last
rule stating a name, and walk them once instead of once per step of a chain.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CSS parser now collects custom-media and custom-selector definitions before minification. It orders definitions by references, resolves supported media and selector references, and leaves cyclic or invalid references unresolved.

Changes

CSS custom at-rule resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure, collect, and seed custom at-rules
lib/css/syntax-parser.js, lib/css/syntax-printer.js, schemas/WebpackOptions.json, tooling/generate-schemas.js, test/configCases/css/minimize-nesting-lowered/webpack.config.js, .changeset/037-css-custom-at-rule-references.md
The parser scans both custom at-rule types and seeds their definitions in reference order. The options add separate customMedia and customSelectors switches; the legacy resolveCustomAtRules option enables either switch that is unset.
Capture and resolve custom-media queries
lib/css/CssParser.js, test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js, test/configCases/css/custom-media-selectors/*, test/configCases/css/custom-media-warnings/*
The parser captures media references with their operator context and resolves supported query trees. Tests cover chaining, grouping, alternatives, boolean values, and unresolved or invalid references.
Resolve nested custom selectors
lib/css/CssParser.js, lib/css/syntax-parser.js, test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js, test/configCases/css/custom-media-selectors/*
The parser recursively expands known selector references and leaves cycles unresolved. At-rule printing resolves custom-selector names. Tests cover forward definitions, nesting, cycles, and escaped or quoted text.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 6e14d

No identified issue remains that needs to be resolved before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6e14d

The new resolution behavior is opt-in, and no introduced security vulnerability was established. Very deep input and overlapping use of the parser remain insufficiently assessed.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — CSS supplied to the minifier reaches the changed lookahead only when a dedicated or legacy resolution option is enabled. The evidenced outcome is generated CSS and compilation work, not a new credential or service authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Configuration controls entry into resolution; visited and resolving-name checks prevent indefinite traversal of cycles. These checks do not establish a bound on an acyclic chain.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Overlapping use in one module instance could interfere with shared parser state, but sequential setup resets it and the shared-state pattern predates this change. The available evidence does not establish a newly exploitable cross-call path.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If untrusted CSS is compiled with resolution enabled, bound dependency depth or use iterative ordering, and validate overlapping-call isolation before relying on shared parser state for failure containment.

Generated code size

Comparing base (eeecde4) to head (16092ba). Merging this pull request moves 14 asset(s) whose tests it edits too, adds 12 new asset(s) and deletes 1 asset(s).

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 3 14 🔴 ↑ +1.96 KiB 🔴 ↑ +9.70 KiB 🔴 ↑ +5.36 KiB
New 3 12 ⚪ added +7.54 KiB ⚪ added +23.96 KiB —
Deleted 1 1 -255 B -464 B —
Unchanged — 8269 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset with an untouched test changed size — every change below comes with a test this pull request edited.

Read @custom-selector rules ahead with @Custom-Media ones and write the names a
list reads, in the minifier and the CSS module parser. The parser also resolves
a @Custom-Media value reading other names, and groups a value of several terms
after not and beside or.

…ing rules

A media feature such as (--bar: 1px) is no reference, and counting it could
order the rules so a name looked cyclic and was dropped.
A list holding ":--bar" in an attribute value no longer reads as a cycle
through --bar, which dropped a selector that resolves.
Split resolveCustomAtRules into one option per at-rule, matching
module.parser.css.customMedia/customSelectors; the old option is
deprecated and turns on each one that is not set.

Drop leading and trailing zeros there as in a value, but keep a written
fraction and sign, so the tested token stream reads the same.
