Summary

CSS Syntax §4.3.7 lets any letter of a property name be written as an escape, but every per-property rule read the name as the source spelled it, so an escaped one matched nothing. The worst case is not a missed optimization: a custom property was not recognized as one, so \2d -x:0px 0px 0px 0px minified to 0 0 0 0 — a value var() substitutes elsewhere and the spec keeps as authored. The lookups now read the unescaped name; the printed name keeps the source's spelling.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — test/configCases/css/escaped-property-names/, which writes each declaration twice (plain and escaped) and snapshots that the pair minifies alike.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

AI was used. It found the defect by running the CSS respelling sweep — which asks whether how a value was spelled decides what it minifies to — reduced it to the repros above, wrote the fix and the config case, and confirmed the case fails without the fix. I reviewed the result.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • CSS properties written with escaped characters are now correctly recognized by their standard property names during minification.
    • Escaped standard, custom, shorthand, and vendor-prefixed properties now receive consistent processing while preserving their authored spelling in output.
    • Property-specific value handling, including integer, color, keyword, and font-family rules, now works correctly for escaped names.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for escaped CSS property names and verified the resulting minified stylesheets.

§4.3.7 lets any letter of a property name be written as an escape, so
`\66 ont-weight` is `font-weight`. Every per-property rule read the name as
the source spelled it, so an escaped one matched nothing.

The worst of it is not a missed optimization: a custom property was not
recognized as one, so its value was rewritten. `\2d -x:0px 0px 0px 0px`
minified to `0 0 0 0`, and `var()` substitutes that value somewhere else —
the spec keeps it as authored for exactly that reason.

The rest are optimizations that silently did not apply: `\66 ont-weight:bold`
kept `bold` where `font-weight:bold` folds to `700`, and a box shorthand
written with an escape collapsed to `0 0 0 0` rather than `0`.

The lookups now read the unescaped name and the printed name keeps the
source's spelling. It costs an `indexOf` where nothing is escaped, which is
every declaration in practice.

Found by the CSS respelling sweep, which asks whether how a value was
spelled decides what it minifies to.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

The declaration printer reads the unescaped name; the guards that decide
what a value may be rewritten to still read the source's spelling, so an
escaped name misses every table they look it up in.

`z-index` is the one that changes what a page renders rather than only
what it costs: `1.0` is not an `<integer>`, so `z-index:1.0` is a
declaration the engine drops — and `\7a -index:1.0` was normalized to `1`,
which turns it into one the engine applies. The others are the same missing
lookup with smaller stakes: a family list, a colour-only property, the
`-webkit-tap-highlight-color` special case.

Reading the unescaped name costs an `indexOf` on a short string; the guard
this is asked of most already memoizes its answer on the declaration.
