Summary

lib/index.js had drifted from the directory layout: some plugins were missing entirely (asset, json, bun, deno, TypeScript — four of six per-module-type plugins were exported and two were not, and node/electron target presets were exported while bun/deno were not), and eleven exports sat at the top level although their directory already had a scope. Each is now reachable under the scope its directory implies; the old flat name keeps working and carries @deprecated, except defineConfig, which stays at the top level because every config file calls it.

Making those tags reach types.d.ts needed generate-types.js: a scope's exports are emitted as one joined export { … }, plus export const and nested-namespace forms, and none of the three carried the comment — so a deprecation was silently dropped. All three now share one rule, and the tag lands where TypeScript actually reads it (on the specifier, not on the statement).

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

feat

Did you add tests for your changes?

No new tests — every change is additive and nothing changes behaviour. Each new export was checked to be the same object as the path it joins, and the TypeScript compiler API was used to confirm all 11 deprecated names report as deprecated and the 11 new ones do not; deepPathShims, Defaults and Validation pass.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No — every old path still resolves to the same object; the deprecated ones are marked for removal in the next major release.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

The new scopes are worth a documentation pass: asset, json, bun, deno, experiments.typescript, css.CssLoadingRuntimeModule, util.RequestShortener, and the eleven moved names. lib/RequestShortener.js pointed migrators at compiler.webpack.RequestShortener, which no export answered; it now names compiler.webpack.util.RequestShortener.

Use of AI

Claude Code was used to audit lib/index.js against the directory tree, make the changes, and verify them — including a probe against the TypeScript compiler API to establish which JSDoc placement a deprecation is actually read from, rather than assuming. It also surfaced a stale JSDoc block in InnerGraph that the checker was attaching to the topLevelSymbolTag export, removed here.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added grouped public namespaces for cache, configuration, optimization, runtime, prefetching, assets, JSON, CSS, Bun, Deno, and TypeScript functionality.
    • Added access to util.RequestShortener.
    • Exported asset, JSON, Bun, Deno, and TypeScript plugins through the public API.
    • Legacy flat exports continue to resolve alongside their grouped equivalents.
  • Deprecations

    • Existing flat export names are now deprecated; use their corresponding grouped namespaces instead.
    • Updated migration guidance for RequestShortener.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

Four of six per-module-type plugins were on the public API (css, html,
javascript, wasm) and two were not, and the node and electron target
presets were exported while bun and deno were not. Each gets the
namespace its directory already implies.

TypeScriptPlugin goes under experiments, beside schemes and ids, because
experiments.typescript is what gates it.
It is the one member of the web scope whose file is not in lib/web/.
The old path stays and now carries @deprecated.

Making that tag reach types.d.ts needed the generator: a namespace's
exports are emitted as one joined `export { … }`, which has nowhere to
put a comment. The doc now rides the specifier inside the braces, which
is the placement TypeScript reads a deprecation from — it ignores one
written on the export statement itself.

That surfaced a stale JSDoc block in InnerGraph, left behind when
getDependencyUsedByExportsCondition lost its third parameter, which the
checker was attaching to the topLevelSymbolTag export.
… names

Cache, PlatformPlugin, WebpackOptionsApply, defineConfig, validateSchema,
ConcatenationScope, OptimizationStages, RuntimeGlobals, RuntimeModule,
AutomaticPrefetchPlugin and PrefetchPlugin each sat at the top level
while their directory already had a scope. Both paths resolve to the
same object; the flat one now carries @deprecated.

Two more generator branches were dropping the tag: a namespace member
that is not a class is emitted as `export const`, and one that is itself
a namespace as its own declaration, and neither prepended the comment.
All three branches now share one rule — a doc is emitted only when it
carries a tag a consumer acts on (@SInCE, @deprecated, @experimental),
since these positions have no line of their own and a description would
render as one very long one. That list is now stated once.
Every config file calls it, so a scope would put three names in front of
each one. It is exposed under config as well, and both resolve to the
same function.
The root shim told plugin authors to migrate to
compiler.webpack.RequestShortener, which no export answered — the class
is in lib/util/, so util is the scope, and the shim now names it.
Every getter this pull request adds is a line only a property read
executes, and nothing in configCases reads one, so the patch went in at
0% covered. The test asserts each scope resolves and that each kept flat
name is the same object as its scoped path, which is the contract rather
than the percentage.

Also shortens the changeset: a combined entry may run past 80 characters
slightly, and 183 is not slightly.

[Compare Source](webpack/webpack@v5.111.1...v5.112.0)

##### Minor Changes

- Apply `plugins` set on a multi-configuration array to the `MultiCompiler`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22702](webpack/webpack#22702))

- Add `optimization.minimize.css.dropOverriddenDeclarations`, dropping a declaration a later one overrides where no target is named. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22175](webpack/webpack#22175))

- Export more plugins under their scope, move eleven loose exports under theirs, deprecate the old, and expose `template.DependencyTemplate`, `module.NullFactory` and `util.makeSerializable`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22261](webpack/webpack#22261))

- Let `util.makeSerializable` take several requests, current one first. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22340](webpack/webpack#22340))

- Emit the source map `scopes` field, so a debugger resolves imported ESM bindings by name. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21999](webpack/webpack#21999))

- Add `library.entryExports: "all"` to expose the exports of every entry module. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22235](webpack/webpack#22235))

- Recognize a required `const` binding assigned to `exports` as a re-export. (by [@&#8203;hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#&#8203;22276](webpack/webpack#22276))

- Accept glob patterns in more path, module and file filter options. (by [@&#8203;hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#&#8203;22422](webpack/webpack#22422))

- Bundle a run of inline `<script>` tags into one chunk the page can inline. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22188](webpack/webpack#22188))

- Add `module.parser.javascript.topLevelThis` for classic-script `this` semantics. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22193](webpack/webpack#22193))

- Add `module.parser.html.chunkName` and a `webpackChunkName` comment for tags. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22200](webpack/webpack#22200))

- Add `include`/`exclude` version and request filters to shared modules. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22297](webpack/webpack#22297))

- Keep module side-effect information in ESM output as PURE annotations. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21789](webpack/webpack#21789))

- Add `optimization.splitChunks.dedupDepth` to discover chunk intersections. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22240](webpack/webpack#22240))

- Add `optimization.minimizeOptions.json`, on by default with `futureDefaults`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22286](webpack/webpack#22286))

- Add `SSRManifestPlugin` and fix server-rendered CSS collection and adoption. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21913](webpack/webpack#21913))

- Add an `ignore` hook to `output.copy` and keep unfollowed `from` symlinks. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22216](webpack/webpack#22216))

- Add `optimization.minimize.css.convertApproximateColors`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22157](webpack/webpack#22157))

- Reduce `css.syntax`/`html.syntax` to `parser`, `printer`, `SourceProcessor` with one node path. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22233](webpack/webpack#22233))

- Add a JavaScript `SyntaxTree` read like the CSS one, and `toEstreeObject`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22608](webpack/webpack#22608))

- Fix minified code that threw, and add `pure_conversions` and `pure_heritage`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22473](webpack/webpack#22473))

- Join rules a gathered `@layer` leaves adjacent, and an at-rule with a later one (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22204](webpack/webpack#22204))
stating the same condition; read what a condition declares.

- Read escaped CSS names and functions as spelled, and minify them unescaped. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22262](webpack/webpack#22262))

- Minify JavaScript, CSS and HTML assets whose names carry a `#fragment`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22277](webpack/webpack#22277))

- Require `minimizer-webpack-plugin` 5.12, so inline scripts in HTML minify again. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22296](webpack/webpack#22296))

- Minify the attributes of an HTML tag without rewriting the template in it. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22166](webpack/webpack#22166))

- Order joined at-rule selector lists and gather a repeated large `@layer` block. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22224](webpack/webpack#22224))

- Preserve case-sensitive template identifiers when minifying HTML tag attributes. (by [@&#8203;bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#&#8203;22177](webpack/webpack#22177))

- Match Acorn's strict directives, Unicode identifiers and expression validation. (by [@&#8203;bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#&#8203;22185](webpack/webpack#22185))

- Escape a foreign `<script>` or `<style>` body, which is character data. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22233](webpack/webpack#22233))

- Name the runtime module whose generation fails while hashing. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22203](webpack/webpack#22203))

- Rebuild a module in watch when its missing unused dependencies swap. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22693](webpack/webpack#22693))
