Summary

A <style> body is raw text in the HTML namespace, so its source is its text, and the parser handed that source straight to the CSS pipeline. The same element in a foreign subtree holds character data, where a character reference stands for what it names — so <svg><style>&#x2e;a{color:red}</style></svg> fed the CSS parser the literal &#x2e;a, an invalid selector, instead of the rule .a a browser reads there. The namespace now decides which of the two the body is, as it already does for <script> and on the printing side; because the body is decoded going in, the write-back escapes it as text coming back out, so an & in the processed CSS is not re-read as a character reference.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — test/configCases/html/foreign-style-body, which fails on the current parser and passes with the change.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

AI (Claude Code) was used, supervised by me. It reproduced the defect, wrote the failing case before the fix, and ran the repo's own verification (yarn lint, the html/css configCases in both the plain and cache variants, and yarn test:invariants); I reviewed the diff and the evidence behind it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of CSS inside <style> elements within foreign SVG and MathML content.
    • Entity references are now decoded and re-escaped correctly when processed, preserving authored character data and preventing unintended selector changes.
    • Standard HTML styles and CSS attributes retain their existing behavior.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for escaped entities, foreign-content selectors, and round-trip output in embedded styles.

A `<style>` body is raw text in the HTML namespace, so its source is its
text. The same element in a foreign subtree holds character data, where a
character reference stands for what it names — so `<svg><style>&#x2e;a{…}`
fed the CSS pipeline the literal `&#x2e;a`, an invalid selector, instead of
the rule `.a` a browser reads there.

The namespace now decides which of the two the body is, as it already does
for `<script>` and on the printing side. Because the body is decoded going
in, the write-back escapes it as text coming back out, keeping the round
trip a fixed point where an `&` in the processed CSS would otherwise be
re-read as a character reference.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Webpack now distinguishes HTML raw-text style bodies from foreign SVG/MathML character data. Foreign style content is decoded during parsing and escaped with character-data rules during output. A configuration test and patch changeset cover the behavior.

Changes

Foreign style character-data handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Character-data dependency and output encoding
lib/dependencies/HtmlInlineStyleDependency.js
HtmlInlineStyleDependency stores and serializes a characterData flag. Its template uses character-data escaping for foreign style output.
Foreign style parsing integration
lib/html/HtmlParser.js
Foreign style content is entity-decoded and marked as character data. HTML style bodies and style attributes retain their existing handling.
Configuration test and release metadata
test/configCases/html/foreign-style-body/*, .changeset/014-html-foreign-body-character-data.md, .changeset/014-html-foreign-script-body.md
The configuration test covers HTML raw-text and foreign character-data cases. The changeset records the patch release, and the previous changeset entry is removed.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 1ff32

Foreign SVG/MathML style content now decodes character references and is safely re-escaped on output, while HTML style bodies retain raw-text behavior. The added round-trip coverage supports merge readiness.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.
