Summary

An entry with several modules (entry: ["./a.js", "./b.js"]) exports only the last module's exports, so a library build silently drops the rest — and in production tree shaking removes them. Closes #15936.

Since that has been the contract since webpack 4, the new library.entryExports keeps "last" as the default and takes "all" to opt in, on output.library and on entry.<name>.library alike. The merged object is written at compile time as a __webpack_require__.d call over the entry modules' known exports, so every name stays analyzable and no runtime helper is added. Conflicts follow export *: a name two modules bind differently is dropped with a warning, one they take from the same binding survives; an entry with unknown exports, or an async one the output cannot await, is an error rather than a thinner library. Off by default the build does no extra work — getEntryOptions() call counts are identical to main, and retained heap and emitted bytes are unchanged.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

feat

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — eleven cases under test/configCases/library/entry-merge-exports*, covering the merge semantics, commonjs/commonjs-static/module/library.export, the error paths, and all 19 library types built and then executed back (-0-create / -1-use / -2-use-script). test/__snapshots__/Cli.basictest.js.snap and test/unitCases/Defaults.unittest.js are updated for the new option.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No — the default "last" is today's behaviour.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

output.library.entryExports (and entry.<name>.library.entryExports) needs a section on the library configuration page, noting the export * conflict rule and that unknown or unawaitable entry exports are an error.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added library.entryExports, supporting "last" (default) or "all".
    • Libraries can expose merged exports from multiple entry modules across CommonJS, UMD, global, and ES module formats.
    • Identical re-exports are preserved, while conflicting names are omitted with a build warning.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Builds now report clear errors when exports cannot be safely merged, including asynchronous, deferred, or unanalyzable entries.
  • Documentation
    • Added configuration schema support and release documentation for library.entryExports.

An entry with several modules exports only the last one's, so a library
build silently drops the rest and tree shaking removes them in production
(#15936). Making that the default would break a contract webpack has kept
since 4, so `entryExports` names it `last` and takes `all` to opt in — on
`output.library` and on `entry.<name>.library` alike, since an
application's entry exports nothing anyone reads.

The merged object is written out at compile time as a
`__webpack_require__.d` call over the entry modules' known exports, so
every name stays visible to an analyzer and no runtime helper is needed.
Conflicts follow ES modules: a name more than one module binds
differently is left out with a warning, while one they all take from the
same binding survives. An entry providing unknown exports, or an async
one this output can't await, is an error rather than a thinner library.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

In @.changeset/008-library-entry-exports.md:
- Line 5: Update the changeset description to clarify that library.entryExports
defaults to using the last entry module and that only the opt-in value "all"
merges exports from every entry module.

In `@lib/library/ModuleLibraryPlugin.js`:
- Around line 596-601: Use a shared aggregate CommonJS condition in the
synthetic default-export logic: name the exportedModules.every result (for
example, allTreatAsCommonJs), assign skipRenderDefaultExport from it, and use
the same condition in the later default-export decision instead of the
single-module treatAsCommonJs value. Add a regression test covering
entryExports: "all" with an earlier ESM default export and a later structured
CommonJS entry, ensuring the generated ESM has no duplicate default export.

In `@schemas/plugins/container/ContainerPlugin.json`:
- Around line 218-220: Add user-facing documentation for the ContainerPlugin
option entryExports, and apply the same documentation to the corresponding
ModuleFederationPlugin option. Describe the "last" default, "all" behavior,
conflict warnings, and errors for unsupported entries, using the existing
LibraryEntryExports reference where appropriate.

In `@schemas/WebpackOptions.json`:
- Around line 3390-3394: Update the configuration reference for
output.library.entryExports using the LibraryEntryExports schema entry: document
both "last" and "all" behaviors, explain that conflicting export names are
omitted in "all" mode, and state that unknown or unawaitable asynchronous
exports produce build errors.

Add user documentation for plugin library.entryExports. The output.library.entryExports reference does not cover the separate library.entryExports options in ContainerPlugin and ModuleFederationPlugin. Document the "last" default, "all" behavior, conflict warnings, and unsupported-entry errors in the plugin option references.

It had been a while since I&`#39`;d worked on it and since I&`#39`;d learned some better JS techniques I figured it was time. As part of that re-build, I updated how the code was minified and bundled. But, that caused an unexpected problem that led me to learn a new thing! At this point, for the sake of brevity, I&`#39`;m going to assume you know about bundling code with a tool like browserify, parcel, or webpack. If you don&`#39`;t that&`#39`;s ok. There are a lot of resources to help you learn. Moving on..... Usually in my projects and at work, I use either gulp with webpack or webpack by itself to bundle assets. That way we can write things like ```js // index.js import Navigation from &`#39`;a11y-menu&`#39`; const navigation = new Navigation() navigation.init() ``` But some of our projects rely on scripts being placed in above the closing body tag and then going from there. ```html <script src="https://github.com/path/to/a11y-menu.js"></script> <script src="https://github.com/js/index.js"></script> ``` ```js // index.js const navigation = new Navigation() navigation.init() ``` Unfortunately... my updates had inadvertently broken the ability to use the second method. I could still bundle the exported `Navigation` class in projects. But with the second method, `Navigation` was `undefined`. That&`#39`;s because when you use the default settings for webpack (and especialy when you minify things) you get code that looks like ```unknown function(t){var e={} // lots more code...} ``` Nowhere is there any mention of `Navigation` because it&`#39`;s been turned into... something? Fortunately what I learned was that webpack has the ability to do exactly this! In the end it required a small adjustment to the output object of my webpack configuration. Before I changed the webpack config file, I had a pretty standard entry/ouput setup like this - ```js const path = require(&`#39`;path&`#39`;) module.exports = { entry: path.resolve(__dirname, &`#39`;src&`#39`;, &`#39`;js&`#39`;,&`#39`;Navigation&`#39`;, &`#39`;Navigation.js&`#39`;), output: { filename: &`#39`;Navigation.js&`#39`;, path: path.resolve(__dirname, &`#39`;dist&`#39`;, &`#39`;Navigation.js&`#39`;), } ``` This setup would let you write like the first example ```js import Navigation from &`#39`;a11y-menu&`#39`; const navigation = new Navigation() navigation.init() ``` To fix my issue, I looked into the settings for the plugins webpack uses to minify assets (e.g. terser). But that didn&`#39`;t really help. You can prevent terser from mangling class and function names. But that doesn&`#39`;t really help when the browser says the whole thing is `undefined` to begin with. But with a careful reading of github issues and documentation, I found that what I wanted were the webpack output library properties! There are three of these - output.library - output.libraryExport - output.libraryTarget TLDR, these properties let me change the output object for webpack like this ```js module.exports = { entry: path.resolve(__dirname, &`#39`;src&`#39`;, &`#39`;js&`#39`;,&`#39`;Navigation&`#39`;, &`#39`;Navigation.js&`#39`;), output: { filename: &`#39`;Navigation.js&`#39`;, path: path.resolve(__dirname, &`#39`;dist&`#39`;, &`#39`;Navigation.js&`#39`;), // allows the Navigation class to be used as its own script library: &`#39`;Navigation&`#39`;, libraryTarget: &`#39`;var&`#39`;, libraryExport: &`#39`;default&`#39`; } ``` Let&`#39`;s explore what each of these does. - `output.library` defines the name of the variable that will be kept in the minified code. - `output.libraryTarget` sets how the library will be used. Since I want to use this in the browser, the easiest approach is to set it to `&`#39`;var&`#39`;`. - `output.libraryExport` determines which of the library&`#39`;s modules will be exposed by the target. It&`#39`;s undefined by default. The code for the library in my case was under the `de…[truncated] <title>Webpack&`#39`;s TemplatePlugin | Tan Li Hau</title> https://lihautan.com/webpack-plugin-main-template In order to build for a library, ie: to expose whatever is exported by the entry file, webpack provides 3 options that you can play with: ... ## Webpack&`#39`;s output.library* options ... To understand how each of them works, let&`#39`;s start with`output.libraryTarget`. ... `output.libraryTarget` accepts`string` as value, there are 2 main groups of values that you can provide to the`output.libraryTarget` option: ... Webpack allows you to specify the name of the module system that you want to use to expose the exported values of the entry file. ... can specify a module ... that is different from ... that you are using in your library ... `commonjs2` uses`module.exports` ... export values from a ... example, webpack assigns ... FE to`module.exports ... ### 2. Name of a variable: "var", "this", "self", "window", "global" ... On the other hand, instead of exposing the library content through a module system, you can specify the variable name which the export object is assigned to. ... Specifiying the`output.libraryTarget` as`var` on the other hand, allows you to assign it to a variable name, which you can provide in`output.library` option: ... ``` // webpack.config.js module.exports = { library: &`#39`;myApp&`#39`;, libraryTarget: &`#39`;var&`#39`;, }; ... // dist/bundle.js var myApp = (function webpackStart({ moduleMap, entryPoint }) { // ... return require(entryPoint); })({ &`#39`;src/index.js&`#39`;: function(exports, require) { exports.default = &`#39`;foo&`#39`;; }, }); // myApp === { default: &`#39`;foo&`#39`; } ... If you don&`#39`;t want`myApp` to contain all the exported value of the entry file, you can provide the key that you want to export only in the`output.libraryExport` option: ... ``` // webpack.config.js module.exports = { library: &`#39`;myApp&`#39`;, libraryTarget: &`#39`;var&`#39`;, libraryExport: &`#39`;default&`#39`;, }; ... // dist/bundle.js var myApp = (function webpackStart({ moduleMap, entryPoint }) { // ... return require(entryPoint); })({ &`#39`;src/index.js&`#39`;: function(exports, require) { exports.default = &`#39`;foo&`#39`;; }, }).default; // myApp === &`#39`;foo&`#39`; ... Again you can observe that by playing different option values of`output.library`,`output.libraryTarget`,`output.libraryExport`, webpack adds different prefix and suffix to the bundled code: ... ``` // libraryTarget: &`#39`;commonjs2&`#39`;: module.exports = {{BUNDLED_CODE}}; // libraryTarget: &`#39`;self&`#39`;: Object.assign(self, {{BUNDLED_CODE}}); ... // library: &`#39`;myApp&`#39`;, libraryTarget: &`#39`;var&`#39`;: var myApp = {{BUNDLED_CODE}}; // library: &`#39`;myApp&`#39`;, libraryTarget: &`#39`;var&`#39`;, libraryExport: &`#39`;default&`#39`;: var myApp = {{BUNDLED_CODE}}.default; ``` ... So, instead of using the webpack built-in library targets, what should we do if we want to support a custom library target that looks something like below: ... I searched through the webpack official docs and found no options that allows that. So the only solution at the moment is to write a webpack plugin. ... a webpack plugin ... After digging around the webpack source code, I found out that LibraryTemplatePlugin instantiates different TemplatePlugins based on the value of the`output.libraryTarget` option: ... ``` // webpack/lib/LibraryTemplatePlugin.js class LibraryTemplatePlugin { ... apply (compiler) { ... switch (this.options.libraryTarget) { case &`#39`;amd&`#39`;: case &`#39`;amd-require&`#39`;: // ... new AmdTemplatePlugin(/*...*/).apply(compiler); break; case &`#39`;var&`#39`;: // ... new SetVarTemplatePlugin(/*...*/).apply(compiler); break; case &`#39`;this&`#39`;: case &`#39`;self&`#39`;: case &`#39`;window&`#39`;: // ... new SetVarTemplatePlugin(/*...*/).apply(compiler); break; // ... } ``` ... I don&`#39`;t understand line-by-line everything that happened in the file, but I do know that the line highlighted above, is where webpack concats the`varExpression =`(in the case of`commonjs`,`varExpression` is`module.exports`, thus`module.exports =`) and the source (w…[truncated]

CLA is now signed, the changeset is included, and CodeRabbit&`#39`;s review feedback from that PR has been addressed in this one. ## Problem With `entry: ["./a.js", "./b.js", "./c.js"]` and a library output, only the last entry module&`#39`;s exports were flagged as used — exports of earlier entries were tree-shaken away and silently dropped from the library. ## Solution (library plugin layer only) - `AbstractLibraryPlugin` gains an opt-in `finishAllEntryModules` mode that flags exports of **every** entry dependency as used, plus a helper that renders startup code merging all entry modules&`#39`; exports into the library exports object. - `AssignLibraryPlugin` (var/assign/this/window/self/global/commonjs/commonjs2) and `ExportPropertyLibraryPlugin` (amd/umd/system/jsonp) opt in. - Later entries win on export name conflicts — preserving the documented "last entry wins" semantics for conflicting names. - `module`/`modern-module` and `commonjs-static` intentionally keep current behavior (their export lists are generated statically from the last entry module). - Merging is skipped when startup is delayed by depending chunks or when entry modules are inlined; single-entry output is byte-identical to before. ## Testing ... - New test case `test/configCases/library/issue-15936-entry-array-exports` — fails on main, passes with this change (multi-entry exposure + conflict semantics). - Full `library` category of ConfigTestCases: zero new failures vs baseline. - Includes a changeset (patch). ... - **New Features** - Library bundles with multiple entry points now expose exports from all entry modules. - When export names conflict, the value from the later entry module takes precedence. - **Bug Fixes** - Fixed incomplete exports in libraries configured with array-based entry points. - **Tests** - Added coverage for combined exports and conflicting export names across multiple entries. - **Documentation** - Added a release note describing the multi-entry export improvement. ## Timeline ... /library/issue- ... ` > > > > > > --- > > > > 📝 Walkthrough > > ## Walkthrough > > ### Changes > > The library plugins now merge exports from all eligible synchronous modules in an array entry. I see that pretty much all imports are done in this way `* as WHATEVER from "whatever"` when we make use of `externalsType: "module"` externals. So perhaps this is where the problem lies? --- ### Timeline **`@sokra`** commented · Aug 31, 2021 at 4:52am > The problem is in fela-plugin-named-keys. Document output.library.entryExports in the configuration reference. The current reference describes only the last module for array entries and does not describe this new option. Document "last" and "all", that conflicting names are omitted, and that unknown or unawaitable async exports produce build errors.

A CommonJS entry module adds `export default __webpack_exports__` to a
`module` library so it stays importable, and that decision read the last
entry module alone. With `entryExports: "all"` an earlier ES module can
still export a real `default`, so the bundle carried both and no engine
would load it. The synthetic one is now emitted only when every merged
module is CommonJS — the same condition that already decided whether to
drop `default` from the export clause, and unchanged for a single entry.

`String.prototype.matchAll` is newer than the Node baseline the harness
executes a case under, so the assertion threw on the Node 10 job while
passing everywhere else. An `exec` loop reads the same names.

- Add `optimization.minimize.css.dropOverriddenDeclarations`, dropping a declaration a later one overrides where no target is named. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22175](webpack/webpack#22175))

- Export more plugins under their scope, move eleven loose exports under theirs, deprecate the old, and expose `template.DependencyTemplate`, `module.NullFactory` and `util.makeSerializable`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22261](webpack/webpack#22261))

- Let `util.makeSerializable` take several requests, current one first. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22340](webpack/webpack#22340))

- Emit the source map `scopes` field, so a debugger resolves imported ESM bindings by name. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21999](webpack/webpack#21999))

- Add `library.entryExports: "all"` to expose the exports of every entry module. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22235](webpack/webpack#22235))
