fix(html): write U+00A0 in a minified attribute as the character - #22208
Conversation
`escapeAttribute` escaped U+00A0 as ` ` on both of its paths, but the
minifier reaches it only when it re-serializes a value — a value it echoes
keeps whatever the source wrote. So one attribute had two printings: a
source writing the character kept it, and one writing ` ` kept that.
The printer already decodes every other reference in an attribute
(`é` prints as `é`) and already keeps U+00A0 literal in a text node,
which `_escapeTextContent` documents as the rule. This applies the same rule
to the attribute path, keyed on the `minimal` flag that already separates
the two callers, so generated markup stays ASCII-safe.
The invariant sweeps now gate CI (`yarn test:invariants`, the `invariants`
job) rather than being read by hand: both printers are at zero findings, a
relation is cheap to hold, and a regression in one is a defect. Two of the
seven divergences the sweep carried were its own: a respelling wrote `=""`
onto a `{% endif %}`, which restates no value, so a tag another language
writes into is now skipped whole. The one that remains is the printer
keeping a source spelling shorter than its own, with the reason corrected.

Summary
escapeAttributeescaped U+00A0 as on both of its paths, but the minifier reaches it only when it re-serializes a value — one it echoes keeps whatever the source wrote. So one attribute had two printings: a source writing the character kept it, a source writing kept that. The printer already decodes every other reference in an attribute (éprints asé) and already keeps U+00A0 literal in a text node, which_escapeTextContentdocuments as the rule; this applies the same rule to the attribute path, keyed on theminimalflag that already separates the two callers, so generated markup stays ASCII-safe.It also gates CI on the invariant sweeps (
yarn test:invariants, newinvariantsjob) instead of leaving them to be read by hand. Both printers are at zero findings, the sweeps need no install and no submodule, and they run in about 6s — a relation is cheap to hold and a regression in one is a defect. Two of the seven divergences the HTML sweep carried turned out to be the sweep's own: a respelling wrote=""onto a{% endif %}, which restates no value rather than respelling one, so a tag another language writes into is now skipped whole. The one expectation left is the printer keeping a source spelling shorter than its own escaper would write, with its reason corrected — the old one described a gzip trade-off that is not what happens. What kind of change does this PR introduce?
fix
Did you add tests for your changes?
Yes —
test/unitCases/HtmlSyntax.unittest.js: an equivalence that both spellings print as one, andescapeAttributecoverage for both the fast path and the loop under each value ofminimal. Reverting the fix puts the sweep back to 4 findings and exit 1.Does this PR introduce a breaking change?
No. Both spellings are the same DOM; the emitted attribute is a few bytes smaller and compressed-neutral.
If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?
n/a — AGENTS.md is updated in this PR, since it said the sweep should be read rather than gated on.
Use of AI
Claude Code was used throughout: to reduce the seven carried divergences to their three causes with a minimal repro each, to write the change, the tests and the CI job, and to run the verification. One intermediate revision of the sweep skipped any tag containing
{or}anywhere, including in an ordinary attribute value, which silently dropped coverage — caught because the reverted-fix regression check then failed to fire, and narrowed to attribute names. Every claim above was measured rather than assumed, and all output was reviewed by me.Generated by Claude Code
