I advise that BitTorrent clients would check integrity only when a torrent is called.
The reasons are.
Save disk I/O;
Save computer memory and power;
Immediate startup.
P2P clients such as aMule, GTK-GNUTELLA, and Shareaza, scan integrity either when a file is called, or gradually during runtime, after interface is loaded, to files that were not yet indexed.
This is significantly important when sharing over 10K torrents with hundred of thousand of files.
