AwsRoute53Client.createRecordIfNotExists() looks for an existing record with

listResourceRecordSetsResponse.ResourceRecordSets?.find((record) => {
  record.Name === `${resourceRecord?.Name}.` &&
    record.Type === resourceRecord?.Type
})

The callback has a block body and no return, so find always gets undefined and existingRecord is always undefined. The function then sends a ChangeResourceRecordSets CREATE even when the record is already there.

In practice the outcome is usually the same: Route53 rejects the duplicate CREATE and the catch returns silently. But every call makes an extra request that is expected to fail, and that hides whatever the error actually was. This PR turns the callback into an expression body so the existing record is found and the function returns early as intended.

Added packages/engine/test/aws/route53.test.js with two cases:

  • an existing matching record leads to a single send call (the list), with no CREATE
  • a record of a different type still gets created

The first test fails on main and passes with this change. Ran locally with NODE_OPTIONS=--experimental-vm-modules npx jest test/aws/route53.test.js in packages/engine.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Route 53 record creation now correctly identifies existing records by both name and type. Matching records are left unchanged, while records with the same name but a different type can be created independently.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for matching records and for records that share a name but have different types.

The find() callback had a block body without a return, so existingRecord
was always undefined and a CREATE was sent even when the record already
existed. That CREATE fails and the error is swallowed by the catch, so the
outcome was the same but every call made an extra
ChangeResourceRecordSets request and hid the failure.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

createRecordIfNotExists now detects an existing record only when both its name and type match. Tests check that matching records result in one send call and same-name records with a different type result in two.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e09f4

The fix is meant to stop redundant DNS record creation. Certificate validation names that already end with a period still fail to match their existing Route 53 records, so the redundant create request persists for them. Normalize the names before merging.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Normalize the record name before comparing it.

When ACM supplies resourceRecord.Name with a trailing period, this expression adds a second period. It cannot match the existing Route 53 record. The method then sends an unnecessary CREATE request and silently catches its error. Compare names after normalizing them, and test an ACM name that already ends in .. AWS documents ACM validation names in that form. (docs.aws.amazon.com)
