Pull Request Checklist

  • Have you added new tests to prevent regressions?
  • If a documentation update is necessary, have you opened a PR to the documentation repository? (will be added to the CLI docs in docs: rewrite the CLI page for @sequelize/cli website#851)
  • Did you update the typescript typings accordingly (if applicable)? (no public API change)
  • Does the description below contain a link to an existing issue (Closes #[issue]) or a description of the issue you are solving?
  • Does the name of your PR follow our conventions?

Description of Changes

Commands close their database connection when they finish. But a migration or seed that leaves a timer, socket or connection open keeps the Node process alive, so sequelize migration run never exits and CI or deploy pipelines hang. sequelize-cli v6 avoided this by always calling process.exit(), which also hid such leaks.

bin/run.js now arms an unref'd 5-second timer after a successful command:

  • If the process exits normally, which is the usual case, the timer doesn't delay it.
  • If the process is still running after 5 seconds, the CLI prints a warning with the active resources (process.getActiveResourcesInfo()) and exits with the command's exit code.
  • Failed commands already exit through oclif's error handler, so they're unaffected.

Example with a migration that calls setInterval and never clears it:

Successfully ran 1 migration(s).
  ✔ 2024-01-01-leaky.mjs
The command finished, but the process was still running 5s later (active resources: PipeWrap, Timeout). A migration or seed may have left a timer, socket or connection open. Exiting.

Before this change, that command never exited. A clean run still exits immediately.

bin/dev.js (contributors only) is unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • The CLI now detects when a process remains active after a command completes. After a brief grace period, it reports active resources and exits with the command’s existing exit status. The CLI waits for the warning to flush before exiting, but uses a timeout if output stalls. This prevents lingering processes from keeping the CLI running indefinitely.

Commands close their database connection when they finish, but a
migration or seed that leaves a timer, socket or connection open kept
the process (and CI/deploy pipelines) running forever. sequelize-cli v6
avoided this by always calling process.exit().

After a successful command, the CLI now waits 5 seconds. If the process
is still running by then, it prints a warning listing the active
resources and exits with the command's exit code. The timer is unref'd,
so it doesn't delay processes that exit normally.

Walkthrough

The CLI runner now schedules a grace-period exit after execute() completes. The helper reports active resources when its timer fires and exits with the current exit code.

Changes: CLI exit handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Schedule and verify grace-period exit
packages/cli/src/_internal/exit-grace-period.ts, packages/cli/bin/run.js, packages/cli/src/_internal/exit-grace-period.test.ts
The helper schedules an unreferenced timer and exits after the warning flushes or the flush timeout expires. The CLI runner calls it after execute(). Tests cover warning flushing, exit code, timeout fallback, and timer reference state.

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: Low · up to 04263

The CLI should exit after the grace period in normal use, but it can still hang on Windows if its stderr pipe stops being read. This bounded risk can be accepted for merge or addressed with a nonblocking warning path.

stdout and stderr are asynchronous when piped on some platforms (e.g.
macOS), so exiting right after the warning could drop it. Exit once
pending output has been written, with a 1 second fallback so a blocked
stream can't prevent the exit.

Pipes are asynchronous on POSIX systems (Linux and macOS) and synchronous
on Windows, per the "A note on process I/O" section of the Node.js docs.
