Disclaimer: I am aware of #2150. Given that it is 6 years old I thought I'll propose this again in case the circumstances have changed.

IDEs show invisible characters (see screenshot from vscode below where there are non-breaking whitespace characters).

Unfortunately, GitHub does not in the PR diff or the file view:

Maybe to simplify such a feature could be to start with (totally unbiased here) non-breaking characters.
