So the question that started this discussion becomes irrelevant – there's no need to call an async function from a sync function in a worker, you should just __export__ an async function directly.

Until the code calling exported functions is updated, the following decorator could be used as a workaround:

def exportAsync(func: Callable[..., Coroutine[None, None, Any]]) -> Callable[..., Coroutine[None, None, Any]]:
    @wraps(func)
    async def wrapper(*args: Any, **kwargs: Any) -> Any:
        return await func(*args, **kwargs)
    return wrapper

@exportAsync
async def exportedFunction(*args: Any, **kwargs: Any) -> Any:
    ...

__export__ = (exportedFunction,)

this won't work with MicroPython ... we definitively want to allow async functions as workers exports so thanks for digging into this and let me know if you want to file an issue or if I should 👋

Well, that's stupid. I've just noticed that the decorator I've provided above does effectively nothing. So I removed it in my code and it kept working. So, async exports just work. I don't know what I did wrong so that they were not working before. But I definitely did something wrong. :( I'm sorry for taking so much of your time, I apologise. :((
