Hi there,
Basemap was revoked by matplotlib some time ago, but was recently revived. I run a package that uses basemap as one of the potential interfaces for providing GeoAxes. There was a brief period last year, where our development was affected by a lack of updates on the basemap, prompting us to reflect whether we wanted to remain support of basemap. The issues got fixed luckily, but we are again at a situation where the development on basemap is lagging with development in other packages. As such I am writing here to draw attention on the development of this package as it falls within the matplotlib family. I think governance of this package should be extended as to not fall on the shoulders of a single maintainer (@molinav) -- I am not sure exactly on how to proceed here, and I am writing explicitly here as I am not sure if that repository is being actively checked by other members of the matplotlib team.
Note I do not want to come across as pointing fingers or negative in any aspect, I just want to ensure that governance of this package continues in a reliable way as to ensure that others can use and build upon it.
Happy to discuss
