Description
In 2022, we started an effort to harmonize the naming of our software so it's coherent and understandable. This lead to the creation of Branding.
In 2023, @kelson42 impulsed a general effort to strengthen the Kiwix brand. Direction was given to mention Kiwix in every software so it's obvious to any user of our tools that it is made by Kiwix.
In late 2024, following a discussion about how to apply this to Branded Apps which have specific constraints due to Audience, distribution platforms, etc @kelson42 added rules to that page for them.
Those rules excludes mentioning Kiwix in the App name or store title nor in the short-description that usually follows. Remembering the discussion, it was mostly driven by technical constraints in Title size (or visible size) and ability for any such message to be understood.
Rule requires that the long-description of the Branded App should clearly express that it is powered by Kiwix (or similar).
We're late 2025 now and the WikiMed App Store listing does not mention Kiwix at all. The Science Simulations one does. On Android, while there are more apps, only Chemistry & Physics simulation mentions Kiwix.
Yesterday @kelson42 made a toot about a WikiMed update which consists only of a Store link and a visual. Struck me that it didn't include any reference to Kiwix.
@kelson42 seems to now consider Branded Apps as white-branded. While it's certainly the case for paid-to-order ones like DWDS, we need to confirm whether the other ones (Wikivoyage, Tunisie, Bollywood, PhEt, AFcon, Wiktionary) should be white-branded or not and if so, adjust our rules.
We don't have to treat all Branded Apps equal. WikiMed is a huge project with a budget and all, it certainly can't compare with Bollywood. But if we decide to treat them differently, the reasons should be clear and documented.
