The first commit from this PR appears to be the cause of #5395. Because I believe that commit is crucial to the rest of the PR working properly, I'm spinning up a revert PR so we can discuss this.
The only answer I have right now is to revert this. I'm not sure I see how the monkey-patching shown in #5395 will be possible if we change how methods get bound.
