Brave Browser Nightly missing from browsers.json (profile switching silently no-ops) #553

Open

Description

@thepaulstella

Summary

browsers.json recognizes com.brave.Browser ("Brave Browser") for profile
resolution, but not com.brave.Browser.nightly ("Brave Browser Nightly").
Setting browser: { name: "Brave Browser Nightly", profile: "<name>" } in
.finicky.js silently does nothing — resolveBrowserProfileArgs never finds
a match, so no --profile-directory or -n flag is added, and the URL just
gets handed to whichever profile window is already open.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Install Brave Browser Nightly and set up two profiles (e.g. "Work" and
    "Personal").
  2. In .finicky.js, add a handler with
    browser: { name: "Brave Browser Nightly", profile: "Personal" }.
  3. With Brave Nightly already running under a different profile, open a
    matching URL.

Expected

A new window/tab opens under the "Personal" profile (same as it does for
stable Brave Browser today).

Actual

The URL opens in whatever profile Brave Nightly already has running. Debug
logs show profile: "" in "Final browser options" and no
--profile-directory arg in the resulting open command.

Suggested fix

Add an entry to apps/finicky/src/browser/browsers.json for Brave Nightly:

{
  "config_dir_relative": "BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser-Nightly",
  "id": "com.brave.Browser.nightly",
  "type": "Chromium",
  "app_name": "Brave Browser Nightly"
}

Happy to open a PR with this change if that's preferred over a maintainer
picking it up.

Environment

  • Finicky 4.2.2
  • macOS (Darwin 24.6.0)
  • Brave Browser Nightly
