Proposed workarounds to deal with recurring failed session creation #5038

@EricBuist

More and more regularly, a Github Copilot App session "crashes" and cannot accept new input, or just refuses to create, forcing the user to copy/paste the prompt and retry, sometimes after restarting the app. Unless this instability can be addressed, the two following workarounds would be useful:

  • A "Recreate session" functionality. For a session that failed creation, when the app blocked at preparing the worktree (although git worktree on CLI works) or when initializing the session, the app could take the initial session prompt, project and model, and start a new session. For an existing session not accepting input anymore or failing all tool calls for some reason, "Recreate session" could use an AI prompt to compact the conversation into a context prompt that would bootstrap a fresh new session, instead of having the user manually start the session and craft the follow up prompt.

  • Many times, when app starts to fail creating sessions, it fails all the times, until the whole app is restarted. This forces the interruption of any active, potentially long-running sessions. That creates the need of starting multiple instances of the app. While the "broken" instance finishes up active session, a fresh new instance could allow new sessions.

Some of my teammates gave up on the app because of these instabilities, returning to Github Copilot CLI and working around too many tabs with large screen+super small fonts, which I cannot do. The above workarounds would alleviate the app usage until a real fix for session instability is found.
