feat(demystify): expand the atlas to 57 genres and 841 tracks
Take in the full library. Every unique, playable track is filed to a genre; duplicates and the rows Spotify cannot play are dropped. - 31 new genres written to the same depth as the existing 26: family, years, spectrum and all six prose sections - synthwave, shoegaze and britpop return now that they carry tracks, with the hand-drawn ASCII banners recovered from history - grunge folds into numetal-postgrunge rather than shipping one track alone - new families and splits that carry real meaning: Jazz as its own family, film/TV score separated from game score, G-funk from boom bap, folk metal from extreme metal, non-Anglophone rap gathered as its own tradition - genres ordered by family then by weight, so the index reads as a survey Rock & Metal 15/128, Hip Hop 12/386, Electronic 8/104, Score & Ambient 7/80, Pop & Soul 8/77, Turkish 6/62, Jazz 1/4. Prerendered output goes from 522 to 553 documents and the sitemap tracks it automatically.

what:
12+
A parallel tradition to the mainstream, running from Digable Planets' jazz surrealism through Deltron 3030's science fiction to MF DOOM's villain persona and, more recently, Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt and JPEGMAFIA. The common thread is refusal: of straightforward song structure, of autobiographical sincerity, and increasingly of the drum grid itself.
13+
14+
artists:
15+
Digable Planets, Deltron 3030, *MF DOOM* in his many aliases (Viktor Vaughn, King Geedorah, Madvillain with Madlib), Aesop Rock, Tyler The Creator, *Danny Brown*, Earl Sweatshirt, JPEGMAFIA, BROCKHAMPTON, Flying Lotus, SHAHMEN, The Doppelgangaz.
16+
17+
trivia:
18+
Daniel Dumile adopted the *MF DOOM* mask after his brother and DJ, Subroc, was killed in 1993 and his group was dropped — the persona let him return without being himself. He later sent impostors in the mask to perform at his own shows, which split audiences between outrage and delight at the consistency of the bit. Aesop Rock has the largest measured vocabulary in recorded rap by a considerable margin.
19+
20+
sonic:
21+
Loops that refuse to resolve, drums that arrive late or not at all, and rhyme schemes that ignore the bar. Vocals are frequently mixed quietly, buried in the beat, or run through telephone filters. Where mainstream rap leaves the midrange empty for the voice, this tradition fills it and makes the listener work.
22+
23+
gear:
24+
MPC and SP-303 for the classic era; Madlib famously assembled _Madvillainy_ largely on an SP-303 and a portable turntable in a Brazilian hotel room. The modern end runs on Ableton with heavy granular and spectral processing, plus deliberately degraded sampling — VHS, cassette and telephone codecs used as instruments.
25+
26+
prod:
27+
Tracks are short — ninety seconds is common — and end without a chorus or a fade. Producers leave sample artefacts, vinyl noise and even count-ins in the mix as texture. Mastering is often deliberately muddy or clipped, because polish would contradict the premise; the records are meant to sound found rather than made.

Classic-era records were tracked live to four or eight tracks at TRT or Istanbul studios with minimal overdubs, which is why they swing. The 2000s wave (mor ve ötesi, Redd) adopted Western multi-track and loudness practice. The 2010s indie bands went the other direction on purpose — home and small-studio recording, audible room, little compression — because the appeal is the writing and the deadpan delivery, not the polish.

Because one person does everything, arrangement decisions happen at the same moment as sound-design decisions, and it shows: the vocal harmony _is_ the reverb, the percussion _is_ a processed breath. Vocal comping runs into the hundreds of takes. Mixes are made on headphones and small monitors for headphone playback, which is why they translate so well to earbuds and so poorly to a club system.

what:
12+
Big beat was Britain's mid-90s collision of hip-hop breaks, acid house and rock dynamics — loud, funny, and built for festival tents. The Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim took it to number one; alongside it ran a quieter, more studious tradition of pure turntable composition, where *DJ Shadow's Endtroducing* (1996) proved an album could be built entirely from other people's records.
13+
14+
artists:
15+
The Chemical Brothers, *Fatboy Slim* (Norman Cook), The Prodigy, Propellerheads, Apollo 440, Overseer; the turntablist line through *DJ Shadow*, Cut Chemist, Kid Koala and, later, Chinese Man and the French cut-and-paste scene.
16+
17+
trivia:
18+
*Endtroducing* was built almost entirely on an Akai MPC60 II from records dug out of a Sacramento basement store, and the _Guinness Book of Records_ once certified it as the first album made solely from samples — a claim that is arguable but stuck. Fatboy Slim's "The Rockafeller Skank" loops a surf-guitar break from The Just Brothers over a vocal lifted from a 1980s hip-hop record, which is roughly the whole genre in one track.
19+
20+
sonic:
21+
Breakbeats — usually a real drum loop, filtered and compressed until it distorts — under a repeating riff and a shouted or sampled vocal hook. Tempos sit around 110–140 BPM. The mix is deliberately crushed: the drums occupy far more of the spectrum than a dance record normally allows, and the bass is a fuzzed-out mid-heavy line rather than a clean sub.
22+
23+
gear:
24+
Akai MPC60/S950 samplers, Technics SL-1200 turntables, a Roland SH-101 or Juno for the acid line, and vintage fuzz and filter pedals used on the drum bus. DJ Shadow famously worked almost entirely within the MPC's limited memory, which forced the terse, looping structures.
25+
26+
prod:
27+
The drums are the record. Producers overdrive the break through a preamp or tape, then compress it again on the way out, accepting the pumping as character. Arrangement is built for a big room — long builds, an abrupt drop, and a breakdown that removes everything but the vocal. Masters from the era are among the loudest of the 1990s, which suits music whose whole aesthetic is excess.

The signature swing is a sequencer setting, not a performance: the MPC's timing-correct/swing parameter set around 54–62% pushes every off-beat late by a few milliseconds. Producers deliberately record loops through the sampler's low bit-depth and sometimes through a cassette deck for saturation. Modern practitioners recreate this with plugins but many, Alchemist and Evidence included, still track through hardware because the artefacts are the point.

Britpop was a press construction that became real: a mid-90s wave of British guitar bands who rejected American grunge in favour of The Kinks, The Beatles and Small Faces, and who sang in their own accents about their own streets. The Blur–Oasis chart battle of August 1995 was front-page news. The movement burned out by 1997, but its melodic habits carried on through The Cranberries, Kasabian and Richard Ashcroft's solo work.
21+
22+
artists:
23+
Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Suede, Supergrass, Elastica; the wider orbit of *The Cranberries* (Irish, and always slightly apart from it), *The Verve* and Richard Ashcroft's solo career, and the later, heavier *Kasabian*. Radiohead began here and spent the rest of their career escaping it.
24+
25+
trivia:
26+
Radiohead have disowned "Creep" repeatedly and dropped it from setlists for years; the song's crunching pre-chorus guitar was Jonny Greenwood attempting to sabotage a track he disliked, and it became the hook. The Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan wrote "Zombie" about the 1993 Warrington bombings — the band's biggest song is a protest record that their label did not want as a single.
27+
28+
sonic:
29+
Big major-key choruses, layered vocal harmony, and guitars that jangle more than they crunch. Rhythm sections play simply and slightly behind. The signature is the arrangement rather than the tone: verses withhold, the chorus arrives with everything at once, and there is nearly always a string or Mellotron pad buried underneath doing the emotional work.
30+
31+
gear:
32+
Epiphone Casinos and Rickenbackers into Vox AC30s and Marshall combos; Hammond organ and Mellotron for the pads; Ludwig kits recorded in real rooms. The era's British studios — Maison Rouge, RAK, Rockfield — ran Neve desks to 24-track tape, and the resulting midrange thickness is half the sound.
33+
34+
prod:
35+
Recorded fast and largely live, with vocals stacked in three or four passes for the chorus. Producers left the room mics up, so the drums have real ambience rather than plate reverb. Masters from 1994–96 are still relatively dynamic; the loudness war arrives in this scene around 1997 and the later reissues are noticeably flatter than the original CDs.
