Pre-flight checklist

  • I have read the Contributing Guidelines on pull requests.
  • If this is a code change: I have written unit tests and/or added dogfooding pages to fully verify the new behavior.
  • If this is a new API or substantial change: the PR has an accompanying issue (closes #0000) and the maintainers have approved on my working plan.

Motivation

Fixes #12757.

Mermaid is a mutable singleton whose global state is configured via mermaid.initialize(). When a documentation page contains multiple Mermaid diagrams (particularly with heavier async layouts like ELK), concurrent renderMermaid() calls triggered on mount/hydration execute initialize() while previous render() calls are still in flight. This wipes or corrupts Mermaid's internal state, leading to a random subset of diagrams resolving with empty SVG outputs ("") without throwing an error.

This pull request:

  1. Implements a module-scoped Promise chain (renderQueue) in @docusaurus/theme-mermaid to serialize initialize() + render() pairs across diagrams.
  2. Ensures that if any individual diagram fails or throws, subsequent diagrams in the queue continue executing cleanly (renderQueue.then(run, run)).
  3. Adds an isCancelled cleanup check in useMermaidRenderResult to guard against stale state updates if a component unmounts during rendering.
  4. Adds unit tests covering concurrent serialization and resilient error recovery in the queue.

Note: Authored with AI assistance per project guidelines.

Test Plan

  • Added unit tests in packages/docusaurus-theme-mermaid/src/__tests__/renderMermaid.test.ts verifying:
    • Concurrent renderMermaid calls are strictly serialized so that initialize + render for the next diagram does not begin until the previous render completes.
    • Failures in earlier queued renders properly reject their own promises while allowing subsequent renders in the queue to continue and succeed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Concurrent Mermaid diagram renders are handled one at a time, helping diagrams display reliably even when they use different themes.
    • If a diagram fails to render, later diagrams can still render successfully.
    • Renders cancelled after a view changes no longer update the display or report errors.
    • Mermaid error cleanup now works safely in environments without a browser document.

…(AI-assisted)

Fixes facebook#12757.

Mermaid is a mutable singleton whose global state is configured via initialize(). When a document contains multiple Mermaid diagrams, concurrent renderMermaid() calls can trigger initialize() while earlier renders are in flight, corrupting parser/renderer state and resulting in empty SVGs.

This change introduces a module-level Promise queue to serialize initialize + render calls across diagrams, while ensuring individual diagram failures do not break the queue chain. Also adds an isCancelled check to avoid setting state if the component unmounts during rendering.

📝 Walkthrough

renderMermaid is exported and serializes Mermaid initialization and rendering through a module-level promise queue. A failed render rejects without blocking later queued renders. The hook ignores results and errors after its effect is cancelled.

Changes: Mermaid rendering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Render queue and effect lifecycle
packages/docusaurus-theme-mermaid/src/client/index.ts, packages/docusaurus-theme-mermaid/src/__tests__/renderMermaid.test.ts
renderMermaid queues initialization and rendering, propagates render errors, and keeps the queue usable after rejection. The hook ignores outcomes after cancellation. Tests check sequential execution and queue recovery.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 11847

The change is mergeable, but a focused cancellation test should be added to limit regression risk in stale Mermaid state updates.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 11847

The queue prevents overlapping initialization and rendering, recovers after rejected operations, and suppresses stale component updates. No new attack path was demonstrated. Residual uncertainty concerns downstream use of the newly exported function and whether a rendering operation can remain pending indefinitely.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new shared scheduling failure domain is the rendering module instance: an unsettled operation would delay all later diagrams using that queue. The reviewed path operates on the client-side Mermaid singleton and DOM; it does not demonstrate new server, tenant, credential, or infrastructure authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The newly exported function lets package consumers directly supply rendering inputs, but no attacker-controlled downstream caller was established. Existing hooks already accepted diagram text and optional configuration. The export alone does not demonstrate a privilege escalation or control bypass.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Serialization improves singleton configuration isolation, and rejection recovery prevents ordinary failures from poisoning later work. Recovery still assumes each dependency operation settles: no timeout or abort exists, and effect cleanup does not remove queued work. A permanently pending Mermaid operation is a conditional containment limitation, not an established attacker-triggerable defect.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes meet the coding requirements in [#12757]. renderMermaid uses a module-scoped promise queue. The queue keeps each initialize() and render() pair serialized. renderQueue.then(run, run) and the caught queue tail allow later diagrams to run after a failure. The hook ignores results after cleanup. Tests verify serialization and recovery after a rejected render.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within [#12757]. The exported renderMermaid function enables direct tests of the queue. The document guard supports test and non-browser environments. The cancellation check prevents stale updates from queued renders. The added tests cover the requested queue behavior. No unrelated change is shown.

15-84: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

The added tests cover queue serialization and recovery after a render rejection. They do not render useMermaidRenderResult or exercise effect cleanup after a render resolves or rejects. A stale-result regression in either cancellation callback would therefore pass these tests.

This is a test-coverage gap, not a demonstrated production defect. Add one focused hook test that replaces or unmounts the effect while the render promise is pending, then asserts that the stale result does not update state.
