What did you change?

Added use_sdpa: bool = False at the end of MultiConvConformerEncoder.__init__ in espnet2/asr/encoder/multiconvformer_encoder.py and forwarded it to all three self-attention variants (selfattn, rel_selfattn, and legacy_rel_selfattn, which the default rel_pos_type="legacy" rewrites rel_selfattn into). The selfattn tuple now spells out qk_norm, use_flash_attn, causal and cross_attn with their old defaults so use_sdpa lands in the right position, same as ConformerEncoder.

Added a parametrized test to test/espnet2/asr/encoder/test_multiconvformer_encoder.py that builds the encoder with and without the flag in eval(), checks every module with use_sdpa has it on, and that both outputs match, for abs, latest rel, and legacy rel attention. The new test fails on master and passes with the change; the existing encoder tests still pass.

Why did you make this change?

It's the multiconvformer_encoder.py item from Group B in #6887. Default stays False, so existing configs behave the same.

Is your PR small enough?

Yes (2 files, ~55 lines).

Additional Context

Part of #6887.

Review in Change Stack →

📝 Walkthrough

MultiConvConformerEncoder adds a use_sdpa constructor option, defaulting to False, and passes it to the standard, legacy relative-position, and current relative-position attention implementations. A parameterized test checks propagation across three attention configurations and compares evaluation-mode output shapes and values between default and SDPA encoders.

Preserve zero-length masking in both relative-attention branches.

If a batch contains ilens=0, the encoder passes an all-false mask to that sample’s attention layers. Enabling use_sdpa selects a floating-point mask filled with torch.finfo(dtype).min. PyTorch adds that finite value to every score, so the fully masked row can still attend to values. The default branches instead zero the attention weights for that row. This changes the encoder output for a zero-length sample, which the new positive-length test does not cover. Zero fully masked SDPA outputs before linear_out in both relative-attention implementations, and test a mixed batch containing a zero length. (docs.pytorch.org)

Thanks @sw005320! The one red check is test_two_gloo_ranks_equal_one_run in espnet3, which timed out after the gloo port was already in use (EADDRINUSE), so it looks like a flaky distributed test unrelated to this change. Could you rerun it when you get a chance?
