Summary

Fixes Python string escaping so values containing line-separator or control characters reach the kernel intact, and replaces code that was hand-copied from another package with imports of the original.

Changes

Python string escaping (@deepnote/blocks, @deepnote/runtime-core)

IPython splits cell source into lines on VT, FF, FS, GS, RS, NEL (U+0085), LS (U+2028) and PS (U+2029) as well as LF and CR, then strips prompt-like prefixes (>>> , In [1]: ) from each line. escapePythonString escaped only backslash, single quote, LF, CR and NUL, so a value like a<VT>>>> b reached Python as a<VT>b.

  • escapePythonString now escapes TAB as \t, every other C0 control character, DEL and the C1 range (U+007F–U+009F, including NEL) as \xNN, and LS and PS as
 and
.
  • toPythonLiteral drops its own inline escaper and calls escapePythonString, so an --input value is escaped the same way whether or not an input block with that name exists.

Executable block types (@deepnote/blocks, @deepnote/runtime-core)

  • @deepnote/blocks exports EXECUTABLE_BLOCK_TYPES_LIST (a readonly tuple) and EXECUTABLE_BLOCK_TYPES (a ReadonlySet<string> built from it). The list goes through an internal arrayOfAll<ExecutableBlock['type']>() helper, so typecheck fails if it misses a member of the ExecutableBlock['type'] union or contains a type outside it.
  • @deepnote/runtime-core drops its hand-written 16-entry copy of the list. Its index.ts re-exports the blocks constants as executableBlockTypeSet and executableBlockTypes.

Other deduplication (no behavior change)

  • @deepnote/database-integrations imports convertToEnvironmentVariableName from @deepnote/blocks instead of keeping an identical private copy.
  • The @deepnote/mcp snapshot tools use countBlocksWithOutputs from @deepnote/convert instead of four copies of the same loop.
  • The real-toolkit integration suites (runtime-core execution-engine and server-pool, cli run) share one codeNotebook builder from test-helpers/integration-notebook.ts. AGENTS.md names test-helpers/ as the home for cross-package test helpers.

Behavior and API changes

  • Generated Python text changes for strings that contain the characters listed above. For example, a tab-indented SQL query now shows \t in the code createPythonCode returns. The values Python evaluates these strings to are unchanged. This reaches the .ipynb, percent, quarto and marimo exports in @deepnote/convert and the code that runtime-core executes for cli, mcp and local-runner.
  • toPythonLiteral output changes only for C1 control characters (including NEL), LS and PS; it already escaped TAB, the other C0 controls and DEL.
  • executableBlockTypes from @deepnote/runtime-core is now the readonly blocks tuple instead of a mutable ExecutableBlock['type'][] copy. Code that mutates it or assigns it to a mutable array type no longer compiles. executableBlockTypeSet keeps its value and type.
  • @deepnote/runtime-core now depends on the new @deepnote/blocks exports, so the two packages need to be released together.

Tests

  • escapePythonString: one case per escaped class, including range boundaries (TAB, U+0008, U+000E, U+001F, DEL, U+0080, U+009F, VT, FF, FS, NEL, LS, PS), and passthrough cases for NBSP, emoji and CJK text.
  • toPythonLiteral: an LS case covering the switch to escapePythonString.
  • Two integration cases in execution-engine.integration.test.ts send a<LS>>>> b (no input block) and a<VT>>>> b (text input block) through a real deepnote-toolkit kernel and assert the value keeps its full length.
  • convertToEnvironmentVariableName unit cases, and a database-integrations test that the variable name generated SQL block code reads matches the name getEnvironmentVariablesForIntegrations injects.
  • mcp: split, load (from a snapshot and from a source file) and merge each report 2 blocks with outputs for a fixture with one two-output block, one one-output block, a block with outputs: [] and a markdown block.
  • executable-blocks.test.ts is removed. It restated the type list, which arrayOfAll now checks at compile time.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of control characters and line separators in Python code and input values.
    • Preserved prompt-like text and special characters during code execution.
    • Corrected snapshot block counts to include only blocks with populated outputs.
    • Ensured generated database environment-variable names match the corresponding Python code.
  • Developer Experience

    • Added utilities for validating executable block types and escaping Python strings consistently.
    • Expanded automated coverage for Python escaping, SQL naming, snapshots, and execution behavior.

… instead of local copies

database-integrations carried a private convertToEnvironmentVariableName with a body identical to the @deepnote/blocks export, and mcp repeated the blocks-with-outputs counting loop four times although @deepnote/convert exports countBlocksWithOutputs.

Both now import the existing helpers. New tests pin the environment variable naming contract between blocks and database-integrations, and the output counts of the four snapshot tool paths.

…ck types from blocks

runtime-core kept a hand-written 16-entry copy of the executable block types next to a comment saying they are defined in @deepnote/blocks. blocks now exports its set as EXECUTABLE_BLOCK_TYPES, and runtime-core's executableBlockTypes and executableBlockTypeSet are derived from it. Both runtime-core exports keep their names and contents.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Q1DHoAjkg2wygBgcDn1nzh
…String

IPython splits cell source into lines and strips prompt-like prefixes (">>> ", "In [1]: ") from each line. escapePythonString left VT, FF, FS, GS, RS, NEL, LS and PS raw inside the literal, so a value like "a<VT>>>> b" reached Python as "a<VT>b".

It now escapes TAB and every other control character (including DEL) as \t or \xNN, and NEL, LS and PS (U+0085, U+2028, U+2029) as \x85 and the four-digit unicode escapes for the last two. Generated Python text changes for strings containing those characters; the values they evaluate to do not.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Q1DHoAjkg2wygBgcDn1nzh
…nString

toPythonLiteral carried its own inline string escaper, a subset of what escapePythonString now does. An --input value is now escaped identically whether or not an input block with that name exists. toPythonLiteral output changes only for NEL, LS and PS, which are now escaped, so such a value followed by ">>> " no longer loses the prompt-like text in IPython.

Two integration cases run a value containing a line separator followed by ">>> " through a real toolkit kernel and assert it arrives with its full length.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Q1DHoAjkg2wygBgcDn1nzh
…al-toolkit integration suites

The execution-engine, server-pool and cli run integration suites each defined the same function that turns Python snippets into a one-notebook DeepnoteFile, differing only in project and notebook ids. The builder now lives once in test-helpers/integration-notebook.ts, next to integration-python.ts, and AGENTS.md names test-helpers/ as the home of cross-package test helpers.

… of casting it

blocks now exports EXECUTABLE_BLOCK_TYPES_LIST, a const tuple checked against ExecutableBlock['type'], and builds EXECUTABLE_BLOCK_TYPES from it. runtime-core's executableBlockTypes copies that list without an `as` cast, so a non-executable type in the list fails typecheck instead of passing silently. All existing exports keep their names, contents and public types.

The runtime-core test that compared its exports with the blocks set is removed: with both derived from one list it could only fail on a deliberate edit.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01PtRGu77D8zSoWhVmZP4YbH
- executable-blocks.test.ts restated the executable type list; python-code, execution-engine, run-in-cloud and snapshot split tests still fail when a type is added to or dropped from it.
- integration-notebook.test.ts tested a test helper that three integration suites already exercise.
- escapePythonString rows inside an already covered character range (U+0001, ESC, GS, RS, U+009F, café) and the backslash-before-TAB case, the input-text TAB test, the NEL and PS toPythonLiteral rows, one convertToEnvironmentVariableName row, and the direct database-integrations getSqlEnvVarName test: every mutation they catch also fails a test that stays.
- The blocks getSqlEnvVarName test pinned a function this branch does not change.

The "leaves unescaped" table now asserts literal expected values instead of rebuilding them with the escaper's own quoting.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01PtRGu77D8zSoWhVmZP4YbH
The escaper's own rule is that no control character reaches generated Python source raw, but of the C1 controls (U+0080 to U+009F) it escaped only NEL. It now escapes the whole range as \xNN. Generated Python text changes for strings containing those characters; the values they evaluate to do not.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01PtRGu77D8zSoWhVmZP4YbH
… package index

execution-engine.ts defined executableBlockTypes and executableBlockTypeSet only to export them; the engine itself uses isExecutableBlock. index.ts now re-exports both straight from @deepnote/blocks under the same names.

executableBlockTypeSet keeps its value and ReadonlySet<string> type. executableBlockTypes is now blocks' readonly EXECUTABLE_BLOCK_TYPES_LIST tuple instead of a mutable ExecutableBlock['type'][] copy, so external code that mutates it or assigns it to a mutable array type no longer compiles.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes expand Python string escaping and use the shared escaper for runtime literals. They add and re-export executable block type constants, use the shared environment-variable name converter, and centralize snapshot output counting. CLI and runtime-core integration tests now use a shared notebook fixture. Tests cover escaping, environment-variable naming, snapshot counts, and input handling.

Assert the injected code points.

LEN=7 can still pass when U+2028 or U+000B is replaced by another single character. Assert the exact code points in both execution paths.

Assert the input code points, not only the length.

Both tests assert only LEN=7, so a same-length substitution can pass. Use code-point values for a Python-version-safe exact assertion; the nested double quotes in the earlier unicode_escape expression can cause a SyntaxError on Python 3.9–3.11.

ExecutionEngine sorts blocks with localeCompare, so the helper's `a${index}` keys put a10 before a2. The helper now uses generateSortingKey from @deepnote/blocks. The input-block integration case copies the replaced block's id, blockGroup and sortingKey instead of hard-coding 'a0', which would now sort after the print block.
