Problem

Voice cloning and profile previews can report that a speech-to-text model is missing even when a working recognizer is installed and selected. A saved transcript does not avoid passage selection for a reference longer than 20 seconds: the selected 15-second audio window needs its own matching transcript.

The bundled OmniVoice path only consulted Transformers-format Whisper snapshots. The initial host bridge also wrote channel-first mono tensors with the wrong soundfile shape and no explicit WAV format, so the selected recognizer never received valid audio. When that hook failed, long-reference fallback attempted transcription without loading cached Whisper.

Changes

  • Route model-level reference transcription through the selected, installed, licence-checked ASR chain; serialize mono audio as a valid temporary WAV and remove it after transcription.
  • Keep checking all windows when one contains silence and no bundled snapshot exists; usable speech elsewhere still wins. Load the cached bundled fallback only when the selected recognizer cannot provide a transcript. Preserve the actionable trim/model-install error when neither recognizer is available; no implicit downloads.
  • Add the PyTorch Whisper Turbo catalogue entry and report the actual resident ASR checkpoint.
  • Allow bundled ASR to unload independently, release its final reference before allocator cleanup, and preserve the separately managed selected-engine hook. Detach the hook when TTS unloads. A shared per-model lock protects loading, passage selection and transcription; unload returns busy without blocking the event loop. Unload-all releases ASR before TTS.
  • Document the saved-transcript/long-reference behavior and update the changelog.

Validation

  • Fail-before/pass-after regressions cover the real WAV bridge, long-reference fallback, pipeline lifetime, hook retention, concurrent transcription/unload, and silence before or after usable speech.
  • 239 tests and 4 subtests pass. Offline targeted validation covers reference selection, the real temporary-WAV bridge with a 27-second clip, cached fallback, missing models, lifecycle, licence workflow and changelog style. Tests use an empty HF cache.
  • Final follow-up validation: 146 tests and 4 subtests pass, including Apple Silicon catalogue eligibility and sidecar reference/release ordering.
  • Current main is merged into this branch. All checks pass on 7dee4d70c: required backend/frontend tests, UI crawler, desktop UI and smoke tests on macOS/Windows/Linux, security, installer and identity checks. GitHub reports CLEAN and MERGEABLE.
  • No real GPU/model synthesis or reproduction on the reporter's machine was performed. A long reference still needs an installed recognizer; alternatively use a short passage and its matching transcript.

Fixes #3176

Review disposition

CodeRabbit and Greptile findings about WAV serialization, unloaded fallback, pipeline lifetime, lost engine selection, cache-dependent tests, test-module isolation, silent windows and concurrent unload are fixed with regression coverage. Unload-all ordering is corrected. The remaining CodeQL cyclic-import advisory is a deferred function-local dependency, invoked only after module initialization; targeted import/lifecycle tests pass, so it does not establish an import-time cycle failure.

The final CodeRabbit follow-up is addressed by exposing the PyTorch fallback on Apple Silicon (with a fail-before/pass-after catalogue eligibility test) and using the model brand “Whisper” in the resident-model list. The proposed sidecar hook is unnecessary: long references already go through omnivoice_inline_reference in the parent; short references use transcribe_reference(..., release_after=True) in the sidecar before loading TTS. Existing sidecar regression tests cover both paths and release ordering. Installing a second hook would duplicate that lifecycle.

RetriggerView in Greptile

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no actionable new issue remains.

Summary

Reference transcription now tries the selected speech recognizer before bundled Whisper.

  • Long voice references use the selected speech recognizer first.
  • The bundled reference recognizer unloads without unloading TTS.
  • Model Catalogue lists the PyTorch Whisper Turbo fallback across supported platforms.

All six supplied, unnumbered previous findings are addressed in the current code. No new merge-blocking issue was found.

Apple Silicon users cannot normally select the new Whisper fallback, and very long references can miss the selected recognizer in the sidecar. Address these gaps before merging; the new inventory label also needs localization.

Explanation

Issue #3176 requires selected-ASR reference transcription, an actionable fallback, a catalogue entry for the bundled Whisper model, and independent ASR unloading. omnivoice/models/omnivoice.py checks the installed host transcriber before cached Whisper, handles long-reference windows and silent windows, and preserves the missing-model guidance. backend/config/models.yaml adds openai/whisper-large-v3-turbo. model_lifecycle.py and model_manager.py support independent ASR inventory and unloading while retaining the host hook. The added regression tests cover selection, fallback, WAV bridging, lifecycle, concurrency, and missing-model behavior. The issue's UI trim suggestion is not a blocking coding requirement because the documented behavior and actionable guidance address the stated failure.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files support issue #3176. The ASR adapter and OmniVoice changes implement selected-engine transcription and fallback. Catalogue, licence, and registry changes support the new installable Whisper entry. Lifecycle changes implement independent ASR unloading and identity reporting. Documentation, changelog updates, and regression tests describe or verify these behaviors. No unrelated change is established by the supplied change summary.

Full details: Backward Compatibility

Explanation

No backward-compatibility failure is introduced. The PR changes no database schema or persisted voice/project/settings format, so no Alembic migration is required. The existing asr_backend preference remains the selection source, and the new reference hook calls the existing local-first transcribe_reference path. The fallback still searches cached snapshots with local_files_only=True; no changed path forces reinstall or model re-download. The revision helper also preserves existing voicestudio-revision or refs/main markers.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description clearly explains the problem, changes, validation, issue linkage, and review disposition. It omits the template's Type and Checklist sections, but the substantive PR information is complete.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 40.74% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 81 functions across 9 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Full details: Cross-Platform Default Parity

Explanation

The PR changes default behavior without an opt-in. backend/services/model_manager.py:2925-2933 installs the reference-transcriber hook for every loaded TTS model. The hook uses active_backend_id(); backend/services/asr_backend.py:3006-3019 selects mlx-whisper on Apple Silicon macOS but whisperx or faster-whisper on Windows and Linux. The new fallback catalog entry at backend/config/models.yaml:104-110 also omits darwin-arm64. This creates platform-divergent default reference-transcription behavior.

Resolution

Gate reference-transcriber installation behind an explicit setting or environment variable, or provide one platform-neutral default engine and a catalog entry that supports macOS, Windows, and Linux. Add default-route tests for Apple Silicon macOS, Windows, and Linux, including fallback catalog availability.

Full details: I18n Completeness (21 Locales)

Explanation

The PR changes no Electron files and adds no new or changed t(...) keys, so no locale key is missing. It adds hardcoded user-facing text: models.yaml:105 provides the catalogue label rendered directly as model.label in model-library.tsx:899, and model_lifecycle.py:153 provides the loaded-ASR name rendered directly as model.name in performance-settings.tsx:351; the associated note fields are also hardcoded.

Resolution

Add stable localization IDs for the new catalogue label/note and loaded-ASR name/note. Resolve those IDs with t(...) in the Electron UI and add the keys to all 21 renderer locale files.

Full details: Local-First Guarantee

Explanation

The PR activates an unsanctioned outbound ASR call. backend/services/model_manager.py:2925-2933 installs the new callback, omnivoice/models/omnivoice.py:1111-1115 invokes it for reference windows, and backend/services/asr_backend.py:3414-3452 routes it through transcribe_reference; when openai-compat-asr is selected, that path permits the remote backend at backend/services/asr_backend.py:3518-3527, which sends the request at lines 2613-2627. .github/CONTRIBUTING.md:400-435 does not sanction remote ASR calls, and this path has no first-run consent gate.

Resolution

Make reference transcription local-only. Exclude openai-compat-asr from the new callback path and use an installed local engine or the bundled Whisper fallback. Alternatively, add an explicit consent gate and obtain owner approval before adding the endpoint to the sanctioned outbound-call list.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Unload ASR before TTS in unload_all().

When ASR is resident, unload_all() unloads TTS first. TTS teardown drops the shared model and its bundled ASR pipeline, so the ASR step returns "success": false, "reason": "not loaded" and the aggregate response still reports "unloaded_all": true. Reorder the IDs so "asr" precedes "tts".

I hit #3176 on v0.5.6 (macOS, Apple Silicon, 22.8s reference, faster-whisper-large-v3 selected), traced it, and then read this PR. Two things:

The bug is already fixed on main by #2301 (merged 2026-09-24, shipped in v0.5.7-beta.1). For references over 15s, tts_backend._omnivoice_installed_passage transcribes each 15s window with the installed/selected ASR via transcribe_reference and hands OmniVoice the best window plus its transcript. That covers the in-process engine and the sidecar (test_sidecar_forwards_installed_passage). OmniVoice's own Whisper fallback only runs if every window comes back empty. #3122 and #3176 are both reports against v0.5.6, and @iamdgarcia confirmed the same thing on #3122.

So this PR isn't needed to fix the issue. If the goal is still to make the model-level fallback honor the selected engine, these need fixing first:

  1. The hook never receives audio. OmniVoice always passes a (waveform, sr) tuple, and _reference_transcriber_call writes it with sf.write(handle, ...) on a file object with no format=. On the bundled venv that raises TypeError: No format specified and unable to get format from file extension: 3, the except returns None, and the selected engine is never called. The (1, N) shape would also be written as 1 frame × N channels. Writing by path with waveform.squeeze(0) fixes both. (Greptile flagged this as P1 too.)
  2. Long references regress. With the hook installed, passage selection skips _load_cached_reference_asr(). When the hook returns None (always, given point 1, or for any silent window), self.transcribe() raises "ASR model is not loaded". Users who have openai/whisper-large-v3-turbo cached work today and would break with this PR. The fallback has to load the bundled ASR lazily when the hook gives no answer.
  3. No effect on Apple Silicon. On MPS, OmniVoice runs in engines/omnivoice_subprocess, whose _load_model calls OmniVoice.from_pretrained directly. install_reference_transcriber() only runs in the API process's model_manager load, so the sidecar never gets the hook.
  4. The new openai/whisper-large-v3-turbo catalogue entry lists platforms: [cuda, rocm, cpu], which leaves out darwin-arm64.
  5. Unloading asr also detaches the host transcriber, although the transcriber doesn't use _asr_pipe. The selected engine then goes unused until TTS reloads.

The tests mock around the hook, so none of them push a real (waveform, sr) tuple through the temp-WAV write. One test that does would catch point 1.
