fix(tests): resolve bun before spawning it so Windows collection cannot abort - #3155
pytest tests/ exits 2 having run zero tests on a Windows checkout where bun was installed through npm. tests/test_mobile_contract.py guards its optional-tool probe on shutil.which("bun") but then spawns a bare "bun" as argv[0]:
an npm-installed bun on Windows is bun, bun.cmd and bun.ps1 — there is no bun.exe;
shutil.which honours PATHEXT and finds the shim, CreateProcess does not and cannot launch it;
so the probe raises FileNotFoundError instead of answering.
Because the probe runs inside a @pytest.mark.skipif decorator, it is evaluated at collection time. The exception therefore does not skip one test — it aborts the whole tests/ session. The skipif exists precisely to degrade to a skip when bun or the Electron deps are absent; instead it took the suite down.
This is invisible to CI: bun is a real binary on the Linux and macOS runners, and no CI job runs the full tests/ suite on Windows (the smoke-matrix Windows leg runs tests/smoke/, backend/tests/, test_hf_token_cache_paths.py, test_win_accept_guard.py and test_media_tools.py). Same shape as the four POSIX-only tests ci.yml describes in its "Isolated backend session (Windows)" step comment.
Changes
Resolve the binary once into a module-level BUN and use it as argv[0] in both the probe and test_mobile_tokens_match_electron_theme, matching how tests/scripts/test_uninstall_elevation.py resolves pwsh.
Treat a failed launch (OSError) or a wedged bun (subprocess.SubprocessError, i.e. TimeoutExpired) as "not installed". A probe whose job is "is this optional tool usable?" answers False when it cannot find out rather than taking the session with it.
Add three regression tests pinning the probe's contract: argv[0] must be the resolved path, and neither an unlaunchable nor a wedged bun may escape.
No behaviour change for users, and none on Linux/macOS, where the probe already worked.

Windows 11, Python 3.11 via uv, CPU torch graph (uv sync --locked --no-group cuda --group cpu), HF_HUB_OFFLINE=1 with an empty HF_HUB_CACHE.
Fail-before — the three new tests run against the previous implementation (reconstructed from HEAD), all three fail, each for its own reason:

Pass-after
pytest tests/test_mobile_contract.py → 7 passed, 1 skipped (the token check skips correctly where Electron deps are not installed).
Class swept. Every other collection-time probe in tests/ and backend/tests/ gates on sys.platform or an already-resolved path. The remaining bare tool names are either expected-argv assertions against a stubbed runner (test_colab_asr_setup.py) or node, which CreateProcess resolves via node.exe. This was the only site of the collection-aborting variant.
Two separate Windows failure classes remain in tests/ and are deliberately not in this PR — subprocess.run(["bash", …]) in test_electron_transition.py / test_docker_cudnn8_compat.py / test_gguf_source_build_runtime_1348.py (Git for Windows keeps bash.exe off PATH; wants a skipif guard), and read_text() without encoding="utf-8" failing under cp1252 in test_colab_asr_setup.py / test_indextts_sidecar.py / test_failure_classify.py. Happy to follow up with either.

The probe resolves bun once and treats launch errors and timeouts as unavailable dependencies, preventing those failures from aborting test collection. However, on Windows, subprocess.run with shell=False may not launch a .cmd shim even by its resolved path, so the reported failure may remain; verify this case and use a Windows-compatible invocation if needed.
…ot abort
`_electron_deps_installed()` guarded on `shutil.which("bun")` but then spawned
a bare "bun" argv[0]. An npm-installed bun on Windows is `bun`, `bun.cmd` and
`bun.ps1` with no `bun.exe`: `which` honours PATHEXT and finds the shim, while
CreateProcess does not and cannot launch it, so the probe raised
FileNotFoundError instead of answering.
The probe runs inside a `@pytest.mark.skipif` decorator, i.e. at collection
time, so the exception did not skip one test — it aborted the whole `tests/`
session. `pytest tests/` exited 2 having run zero tests on every Windows
checkout. Invisible to CI, where bun is a real binary on the Linux and macOS
runners; the same shape as the POSIX-only tests ci.yml describes in its
"Isolated backend session (Windows)" step.
Resolve the binary once into `BUN` and use it as argv[0] in both the probe and
the test body, matching how tests/scripts/test_uninstall_elevation.py resolves
`pwsh`. Treat a failed launch (OSError) or a wedged bun (SubprocessError, i.e.
TimeoutExpired) as "not installed": a probe that answers "is this optional tool
usable?" reports False when it cannot find out rather than taking the suite
down.
Swept the rest of the class: every other collection-time probe in tests/ and
backend/tests/ gates on sys.platform or a resolved path, and the remaining bare
tool names are either expected-argv assertions against a stubbed runner
(test_colab_asr_setup.py) or `node`, which CreateProcess resolves via node.exe.
This was the only site.
Three regression tests pin the contract: argv[0] must be the resolved path, and
neither an unlaunchable nor a wedged bun may escape the probe. All three fail
against the previous implementation.

Walkthrough
The mobile contract tests now use a resolved Bun executable path and treat missing or failed probes as unavailable dependencies. The changelog fragment records the Windows test-collection fix, and changelog guidance lists the permitted Unreleased subsections and entry rules.
Changes: Bun dependency probe
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Resolve and run the Bun probe tests/test_mobile_contract.py, .coderabbit.yaml, changelog.d/3155.fixed.md
The tests resolve Bun once, use its path for the dependency probe and token check, and return False when Bun is unavailable or the subprocess call raises an error. New tests cover resolved-path use, launch failures, and timeouts. The changelog fragment records the Windows test-collection fix, and repository guidance defines the permitted Unreleased subsections and entry rules.

The added tests call only _electron_deps_installed(), so reverting the token-check call to bare "bun" would leave the Windows shim regression undetected. Extract the invocation into a helper and assert its argv[0] with the existing fake subprocess.run fixture; the current head call is correct, so this is a coverage gap rather than a current production failure.
