desktop: Electron version still ~1GB memory (Node server wrapped in Electron) #58268

Closed as not planned

Description

@oudex

Summary

Desktop 1.18.x (Electron) still uses ~1GB RAM at idle, no improvement over Tauri wrapper. 6x OpenCode.exe + 1x opencode-cli.exe.

Environment

  • opencode version: 1.18.32 (opencode-ai@1.18.32 via npm)
  • OS: Windows 10.0.19045.6466 (ver)
  • Terminal: Unavailable: terminal env vars not set
  • Shell: cmd.exe (%COMSPEC%)
  • Install/channel: release, Desktop (Electron) + npm cli
  • Active plugins: Unavailable: not checked (project policy: no reads outside workspace, no opencode.json in workspace)

Reproduction

  1. Install/start OpenCode Desktop 1.18.32 on Windows
  2. Idle, no heavy session running
  3. Run tasklist /FI "IMAGENAME eq OpenCode.exe" and tasklist /FI "IMAGENAME eq opencode-cli.exe"

Expected Behavior

Electron rebuild should reduce memory/startup failure vs Tauri+bundled CLI, or at least not regress.

Actual Behavior

Idle usage ~1.05GB:

  • OpenCode.exe x6: 185MB + 151MB + 43MB + 190MB + 23MB + 70MB (~665MB)
  • opencode-cli.exe x1: ~390MB

Same complaint as before: server (Node/Bun) wrapped in Electron, Chromium overhead remains.

Thanks for measuring this so carefully, @oudex.

This report is about OpenCode Desktop 1.18.32, which is v1. v1 now only gets fixes for critical bugs, such as data loss, security problems, or crashes or breakage with no workaround. High idle memory doesn't fall into those categories, so this is unlikely to be changed in v1. As you mentioned, the opencode CLI/TUI is a lighter option in the meantime.

Please try OpenCode v2 (@opencode/cli, versions 2.x), where active development happens. If memory use is still this high on v2, or if you think this is critical (for example, it leads to crashes), reply here with the v2 version and the numbers you see and we'll take another look.

I'm closing this as not planned. It's about OpenCode Desktop 1.18.32, which is v1, and v1 only gets critical fixes. High idle memory with no crashes or data loss doesn't count as critical. Thanks again for the detailed measurements, @oudex.

If memory use is still around 1 GB on OpenCode v2 (@opencode/cli, 2.x), please open a new issue with the v2 version and your numbers. If this is causing crashes, you can also reply here and we'll take another look. In the meantime, the opencode CLI/TUI uses less memory.
