Make the profile page look more like GitHub profile #612
Maybe also add the sponsorship options and allow people to at least add a link to receive sponsorship?
Team badges / achievements — Right now, people are very appreciative of the current WP.org badges and it is probably the only thing working well for the current page in terms of gamification, so I believe we should keep it somehow?
The whole design should feel more modern, so maybe also having a strong focus on just improving the design itself
I also exported both pages and vibe coded an example of what this could look like:
That looks cool but when you're on a team also show activity there so it's clear how active you are with that team, or if you're just listed and not really doing anything.
@felipevelzani I really like this profile design direction. I think it gives the WordPress.org profile page a much more modern and useful feel, similar to the GitHub profile experience, while still keeping the WordPress community identity.
To make the work easier to plan and avoid everything becoming too large at once, maybe we can approach this phase by phase:
Phase 1: Profile UI/Design Modernization
In the first phase, we can focus mainly on improving the current profile page design using the data that is already available.
This could include:
Modern GitHub-style profile layout
Left sidebar with profile image, name, username, bio, location, website, social links, and follow/follower details
Improved badges and teams section
Better top navigation tabs like Overview, Core, Plugins & Themes, Translations, Support, Events, etc.
Basic contribution stats such as total contributions, years active, first contribution, commits, translations, and support activity
Better responsive/mobile layout
This phase would mostly be a UI/UX improvement and should be easier to start with.
Phase 2: Contribution Activity Overview
In the second phase, we can add more useful contribution-related sections.
This could include:
Pinned contribution cards
Contribution activity summary
Recent activity timeline
Team-wise activity breakdown
Filters by activity type, such as commits, props, translations, forum replies, meetups, handbook edits, etc.
Better display of existing badges, roles, and achievements
This phase would make the profile more meaningful for contributors and help visitors quickly understand someone’s contribution history.
Phase 3: Advanced Contribution Graph and Gamification
In the third phase, we can work on the more complex features that may need more time and API/data support.
This could include:
GitHub-style daily contribution heatmap
Ability to select a specific date and view activity from that day
Advanced filtering by date, team, project, and contribution type
Sponsorship link or sponsor button support
Contribution streaks, milestones, and achievements
Possible API support from the Contributor Dashboard or other WordPress.org data sources
I also think we should keep the existing WordPress.org badges in some form, because people really appreciate them and they are already one of the strongest gamification elements on the current profile page.
Overall, Phase 1 can help us improve the visual design quickly, Phase 2 can make the contribution history more useful, and Phase 3 can add the more advanced GitHub-style contribution graph and gamification features.
Here are quick mockups as per my suggestion, and I love to work on this amazing project too if I get the chance
