Fixes #4224

Problem

startServer() called app.listen(port) with no host, so Node bound every interface (:: / 0.0.0.0).

A throwaway Playground site ships with well-known credentials (admin / password). Serving it on a shared network — conference wifi, a co-working LAN — exposed it to anyone on that network, and on Windows it also raised a firewall prompt. Making it worse, the display URL hardcoded 127.0.0.1, so the site looked loopback-only while the socket was actually listening on everything.

Change

  • startServer() defaults the bind to 127.0.0.1 and accepts a host option.
  • --host is exposed on both start and server for anyone who genuinely wants to reach the site from another device.
  • isPortInUse() takes the same host, so the port probe and the real bind agree instead of probing a different interface.
  • The display/site URL follows the chosen host rather than a hardcoded literal.

Testing

npx nx run playground-cli:test-playground-cli — new cases in start-server.spec.ts:

Before After
Bind address expected '::' to be '127.0.0.1' (2 failed) OK (5/5 focused)
Whole CLI suite — 190/190 across 13 files

The red run is direct proof of the all-interfaces bind: the socket address was ::, not 127.0.0.1.

Compatibility

Default behaviour changes from "reachable on the LAN" to "loopback only". That is the point of the fix, and it matches the URL the CLI already advertised — but it is a behaviour change, so flagging it explicitly for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The server and start commands support a --host option. Use 0.0.0.0 to allow connections from other devices on your network.
    • By default, the server listens on 127.0.0.1. Port availability is checked on the selected host.
    • The displayed server URL uses 127.0.0.1 for wildcard or empty bind hosts, and correctly formats IPv6 addresses.

startServer() called app.listen(port) with no host, so Node bound every
interface (:: / 0.0.0.0). A throwaway Playground site ships with
well-known admin credentials, so serving it on a shared network (a
conference wifi, a co-working LAN) exposed it to anyone on that network,
and on Windows it also triggered a firewall prompt. The display URL
hardcoded 127.0.0.1, which made the site look loopback-only while the
socket was listening on everything.

startServer() now defaults the bind to 127.0.0.1 and accepts a host
option, exposed as --host on `start` and `server` for anyone who does
want to reach the site from another device. isPortInUse() takes the same
host so the probe and the real bind agree.

📝 Walkthrough

The CLI server and start commands accept a host option. The server defaults to 127.0.0.1. A configured host is used for port checks and server binding. The displayed URL handles wildcard, empty, and IPv6 bind addresses.

Passing an empty host can expose the server to the local network while the CLI displays a loopback URL. This undermines the loopback-by-default goal. Normalize the empty host before merging.

Explanation

Issue #4224 requires loopback binding by default and an explicit host option through the CLI and runCLI. The diff sets startServer() and isPortInUse() to use 127.0.0.1 by default. It adds host?: string to RunCLIArgs, adds --host to both start and server, and passes the value to the port probe and server bind. The displayed URL handles the selected host, including wildcard and IPv6 values. Tests cover default loopback binding and explicit 0.0.0.0 binding.

Normalize an empty host before binding.

If a caller passes host: '', this code displays 127.0.0.1, but the port probe and listener receive the empty string. Node treats an empty listen host as an unspecified address, which can expose the site to other devices despite the loopback URL. Normalize args.host to 127.0.0.1 before both the probe and startServer() call, or reject an empty host. (github.com)
