Motivation for the change, related issues

Startup captions currently turn WordPress.org slugs into sentence case, producing names such as “Woocommerce” and “Wordpress importer”. Fetch the published display names so download, installation, and activation progress retain the correct branding.

Fixes #1487. Related: #910 and the unmerged metadata proposal in #2580.

Implementation details

  • Look up optional WordPress.org plugin/theme metadata with a three-second timeout. Failed requests, non-success responses, and invalid metadata fall back to the existing name.
  • Decode HTML entities with entities, including named entities and Unicode numeric references, in browsers and Node.js.
  • Keep existing ZIP URLs and filenames, including version-pinned archives. Metadata cannot redirect a download or change how another Blueprint step consumes the file.
  • Pass the display name through the existing humanReadableName install option, preserving explicit overrides. Reuse the activation progress caption for themes without adding a schema field.

Testing Instructions (or ideally a Blueprint)

Run npm run dev and open:

Verify captions use “WooCommerce”, “WordPress Importer”, and “Twenty Twenty-Five”. Blocking api.wordpress.org should still allow archive downloads and installation through the existing fallback.

Validation completed:

  • Nine metadata tests covering pinned ZIP URLs, filename preservation, caching, immutable input references, API failures, invalid responses, and HTML entities.
  • 110 existing installation and compiler tests passed.
  • npm exec nx -- run playground-blueprints:build
  • npm exec nx -- run-many --projects=playground-blueprints --targets=lint,typecheck
  • Browser check: correct WooCommerce and Twenty Twenty-Five download captions; the importer/theme site completed booting.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • WordPress.org plugin and theme installations now use the resource’s display name when available, making installation progress easier to recognize.
    • Theme activation progress now preserves a supplied caption, or displays an “Activating [theme name]” caption by default.

📝 Walkthrough

WordPress.org plugin and theme resources now use API display names when available, while retaining slug-based archive filenames. Install arguments use the resource name as a fallback human-readable name. Theme activation progress preserves an existing caption or uses a theme-specific default.

Changes: Resource display names and activation captions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve WordPress.org resource names
package.json, packages/playground/blueprints/src/lib/v1/resources.ts, packages/playground/blueprints/src/tests/v1/wordpress-org-resources.spec.ts
Plugin and theme resources use a decoded API display name when available and fall back to a slug-derived name. Archive filenames remain slug-based. Tests cover metadata success, fallback cases, HTML entity decoding, and reuse of resolved results.
Pass resource names to install handlers
packages/playground/blueprints/src/lib/v1/compile.ts
compileStep sets options.humanReadableName from the resource name for WordPress.org plugin and theme installs only when the option is unset.
Set theme activation progress captions
packages/playground/blueprints/src/lib/steps/install-theme.ts, packages/playground/blueprints/src/lib/steps/activate-theme.ts
Theme installation preserves an existing progress caption or supplies Activating <theme name>. Theme activation uses the caption when it is truthy.

Slow metadata responses can delay startup progress, but archive downloads still proceed afterward. This is a bounded merge risk worth addressing.

Start the ZIP download in parallel with optional metadata lookup.

WordPressOrgResource.resolve() waits for the metadata request before it calls super.resolve(). A slow metadata response can therefore delay the ZIP download by up to three seconds. The wait also occupies a SemaphoreResource slot.

Start both operations together. Update the caption when a display name arrives, because FetchResource.resolve() initially uses the fallback name. Keep the existing filename override and await the metadata promise before returning so resource.name remains available to compileStep. The semaphore slot will still remain occupied until both operations finish.
