Summary

Implements Track 1 of #4408 to improve AI discovery and LLM retrieval across Playground Web, Personal WordPress, and the Documentation site:

  • Enriched packages/playground/website/public/llms.txt: Documents the complete Query API URL parameters (?plugin=, ?theme=, ?wp=, ?php=, ?networking=yes, ?blueprint-url=, etc.), inline # Blueprint JSON URLs and common steps, in-browser WebMCP (document.modelContext) tools, and @wp-playground/mcp / @wp-playground/cli.
  • Added packages/playground/website/public/.well-known/mcp.json: Provides a machine-readable discovery manifest for both in-browser WebMCP (document.modelContext) tools and the @wp-playground/mcp stdio server.
  • Added packages/playground/personal-wp/public/llms.txt & discovery tags: Adds /llms.txt, <meta name="llms:instructions">, and <link rel="alternate" type="text/plain" href="https://github.com/llms.txt"> to personal-wp/index.html.
  • Auto-generated /llms.txt in Docusaurus build (generate-handbook-manifest.js): Emits llms.txt alongside manifest.json during postBuild for the default locale with direct links to raw Markdown documentation sources and materialized TypeDoc Markdown.

Testing Instructions

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes add generated handbook links for AI-readable documentation and update WordPress Playground’s AI-agent documentation, page metadata, and MCP configuration.

Changes

Handbook manifest

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generate and verify handbook links
packages/docs/site/plugins/generate-handbook-manifest.js, packages/docs/site/plugins/generate-handbook-manifest.spec.js
The default-locale build writes handbook entries as Markdown links in llms.txt. Tests verify the generated content and confirm that a French-locale build leaves the file unchanged.

Playground agent information

Layer / File(s) Summary
Playground website agent reference
packages/playground/website/public/llms.txt, packages/playground/website/public/.well-known/mcp.json
The website reference documents URL parameters, Blueprints, WebMCP tools, local commands, and platform details. The MCP configuration declares project metadata, WebMCP tools, and a stdio server.
My WordPress agent information
packages/playground/personal-wp/index.html, packages/playground/personal-wp/public/llms.txt
The page adds llms:instructions metadata and a plain-text alternate link. The text file describes the app’s WebMCP tools, plugin iframe tool proxying, and related links.

## Browser Agent Integration (WebMCP / `document.modelContext`)

When an AI browser agent (Chrome 156+ WebMCP, ChatGPT desktop built-in browser Site Tools, or a WebMCP extension) opens `https://my.wordpress.net/`, it automatically registers structured tools on `document.modelContext`:

🌐 Web query:

official Chrome WebMCP documentation origin trial local flag Chrome 156 and official ChatGPT Site Tools availability account page tools

💡 Result:

**Official docs confirm both points, with one version caveat:**

- **Chrome WebMCP:** Chrome’s documentation says the origin trial starts in **Chrome 149**—not specifically Chrome 156. For local testing, enable `chrome://flags/#enable-webmcp-testing` and relaunch Chrome. The docs establish the flag and trial guidance, but don’t establish a Chrome-156-specific change. ([developer.chrome.com](https://developer.chrome.com/docs/ai/webmcp?authuser=17&utm_source=openai))
- **ChatGPT Site Tools:** They work in the **ChatGPT desktop app’s built-in browser**, not Chrome. Availability depends on your account, selected model, and whether the current page offers a matching tool. Open a supported page and select the address-bar arrow to inspect its tools; tools are page-specific. ([help.openai.com](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001423-using-site-tools-in-the-chatgpt-desktop-app?utm_source=openai))

So Chrome’s local WebMCP flag and ChatGPT’s Site Tools are related through WebMCP, but they are separate ways to access website tools.

State the WebMCP availability requirements.

The My WordPress page includes a Chrome WebMCP origin-trial token, but registration still requires a browser that exposes document.modelContext. ChatGPT Site Tools also require eligible account and model access and a page that provides matching tools.

Document the Query API default for networking.

The Query API defaults networking to yes, so agents do not need to add networking=yes to enable outbound PHP networking. State that the parameter controls networking and that plugins requiring external access need networking enabled.

Correct the storage values and default.

The Query API documents storage=temp for a site that is discarded on refresh. Without that value, Playground may autosave the site. Agents following this line can create a persistent site when they intend a temporary one. Replace storage=none and storage=browser with the documented lifecycle behavior. (wordpress.github.io)
