Why

The "Lint and typecheck" CI job runs tools/check-node-engine-alignment.sh, which fetches WordPress Core's package.json from wordpress-develop/trunk at run time and verifies that this repository declares the same engines values. WordPress Core raised its requirements to node >=24.18.0 and npm >=11.16.0 on September 8 (WordPress/wordpress-develop@62439bbb0a, "Build/Test Tools: Upgrade Node.js to 24.x."), so the check started failing on every PR. #4312 stopped the bleeding by pinning the check to a pre-upgrade Core revision. This PR resolves the misalignment itself: it adopts Core's Node 24 requirements and restores the live check.

What

  • Bump engines.node to >=24.18.0 and engines.npm to >=11.16.0 in the root package.json and all package package.json files, and refresh the matching engines entries in package-lock.json.
  • Update .nvmrc from 22 to 24.
  • Move every CI workflow pinned to Node 20 or 22 to Node 24, and raise the prepare-playground action's default from 20 to 24. This is required, not cosmetic: .npmrc sets engine-strict = true, so npm ci fails under any Node below 24.18.0 once the engines are bumped.
  • The vendored WordPress bundles under packages/playground/wordpress-builds/public/ are untouched; their theme package.json files belong to WordPress Core.

Reverts the pinned Core revision from #4312

#4312 pinned check-node-engine-alignment.sh to a fixed Core revision so upstream upgrades cannot fail Playground CI. This PR restores the live wordpress-develop/trunk URL. The live fetch is intentional: a red check is the signal that Playground must adopt Core's new runtime requirements. This PR acts on that signal by adopting Node 24.

Breaking changes

Published @php-wasm/* and @wp-playground/* packages now declare node >=24.18.0. Downstream consumers (Telex, Studio, wp-env) installing with engine-strict or running Node below 24.18.0 will be affected.

Testing

  • bash tools/check-node-engine-alignment.sh passes locally against Core's live values.
  • CI on this PR exercises the Node 24 workflow changes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated the supported runtime to Node.js 24.18.0 or later and npm 11.16.0 or later across the project and its packages.
    • Standardized development, testing, publishing, and integration workflows on Node.js 24.
    • Updated the project’s default Node.js version to 24.
    • Released updated package versions where applicable.
    • Existing installations using older Node.js or npm versions will no longer meet the minimum requirements.

Publish a CommonJS entry for @php-wasm/compile-extension.

The package is ESM-only. package.json sets "type": "module", and both main and module point to ./cli.js. The Vite build also emits only cli.js; no build or publish configuration produces cli.cjs. This violates the repository requirement that packages publish both ESM and CommonJS formats.

Generate cli.cjs and map the CommonJS entry to it.

Thank you @brandonpayton!

MatthiasReinholz added a commit to MatthiasReinholz/wp-plugin-base that referenced this pull request Oct 20, 2026
Adopt @npmcli/arborist 9.9.3 for the locked npm audit producer
(supersedes Dependabot #418):
- Upstream 9.9.3 changes only build-ideal-tree peer-conflict handling and
linked-strategy allowScripts identity; dependencies unchanged; the audit
path (loadVirtual + AuditReport) is untouched.
- Lock regenerated in node:22 (npm 10.9.9) and node:24 (npm 11.19.1)
containers; both match Dependabot's lock byte for byte. Tarball sha512
  matches the lock integrity.
- Installed tree via wp_plugin_base_install_npm_audit is identical on Node
  22.12.0, 22.23.3 and 24.22.0 (2151 files, 116 packages): zero self-audit
findings, all registry signatures verified, no engines excluding 22.12.0.
- Inventory digest recomputed by an independent implementation that first
reproduced the previous reviewed value (3cdf3300...4892); new value
  55912b50ebf83eb80254d59c9d8cdc05571622a5afe98d47a7edfd5e5949c1a9. Tree
differs from 9.9.2 only in three Arborist files and the hidden lockfile.
- Raw audit reports from 9.9.2 and 9.9.3 are byte-identical on the
remediation fixture and Markdown tool graphs; real audits pass on Node 22
  and 24; test_npm_remediation.mjs passes 39/39 on Node 22.12.0, 22.23.3
  and 24.22.0.

Block @wordpress/env 11.17.0 (Dependabot #391) at 11.16.0:
- 11.17.0 requires @wp-playground/cli ^3.1.56; Playground 3.1.55+ declares
  node >=24.18.0 / npm >=11.16.0 (WordPress/wordpress-playground#4322), so
engine-strict install fails on the supported Node 22 floor.
- Both adapted upstream files are byte-identical in 11.17.0 and simple-git
is still ^3.32.3 via the default import; expectations not refreshed.
- sprintf-js GHSA-hp3w-g68c-fv3c still unpatched (4 moderate findings).
- Block recorded with owner and next review date 2026-11-19.
