What?

Migrate date format and preset input selectors to @wordpress/ui, and simplify the aspect-ratio control's option rendering.

Why?

Replace these legacy CustomSelectControl consumers with shared popup, focus, and theming behavior.

How?

Use SelectControl for date format and Select for preset input. The remaining date fields use SwitchControl, InputControl, and Link, with Stack rendering Fieldset.Root.

CSS overrides targeting legacy select, input, and label classes must be updated. Control-specific root hooks remain. Popup items render outside the control root, so root-descendant selectors no longer reach them. See the changelog for the retired hooks.

Testing Instructions

In Storybook Editor / Block Editor / DateFormatPicker, toggle Default format and switch between suggested formats and Custom. Choosing Custom should reveal the field without changing its value. Edit the custom format and check the help link.
With more than eight spacing or border-radius presets, select a preset, clear it with Default/None, and switch to a custom value and back. Check focus/hover highlights and the layout at 320px.
In Storybook Editor / Block Editor / DimensionsTool / AspectRatioTool, verify initial labels, available options, and selection.

Testing Instructions for Keyboard

Tab to each selector. Use Enter, arrows, and Home/End to select options. Escape should dismiss the popup without changing the value and return focus to the trigger. Check the preset control's focus highlight when tabbing in and out.

Screenshots or screencast

Existing migration captures use matching data, light theme, and a 320 × 600 viewport. Before uses d808d87d5d0; after uses the original migration at 6f1b7cd853c. Later feedback fixes and this split were verified separately. Temporary Storybook fixtures load the real component styles.

@mirka my agent, reviewing base ui docs, is suggesting that we're often passing redundant items, and that the examples would very often work fine without it.

Can you confirm is this is true, or otherwise if there was a reason why the examples were passing items?

Haha I like how it's trying to cut extra lines of code!

However for this one I would push back. While I was working through this, I noticed that it's simpler devex to just always pass the items. The decision tree of whether you actually need it is not simple, whereas it's simpler to just always pass the items array that you most likely already have prepared anyway.

So yeah, it's true that they're not all technically necessary, but I think it's less complex that way. I would especially be conscious of how any change here makes the docs harder to understand.

should App usage also always specify the items?

regardless, I feel like we should clarify this aspect in an explicit section of the Usage Guidelines, I suspect agents will continue to be confused about this

After reviewing the PR, I'm kind of trying to assess whether this amount of primitive usage is warranted. I'm expecting there to be very little usage of the primitives in the first place, which makes the items point a rare thing to encounter. But given the first iteration of this migration PR, I'm thinking we do need better migration docs. I'll work on that, informed by the diff between version 1 of this PR and where we land.

From my early experience with some agent-driven migrations as well, I'm still a bit torn on this, to be honest. On one hand, it doesn't seem important to have agent guidance to enforce/encourage items, because it's already seemingly capable of knowing when it's not strictly necessary. However, I'm also seeing instances where it adds unnecessary code that could have been avoided if items were passed.

I don't have a strong answer yet, but I'll think about this again when preparing the migration docs.

What's the reason for not fully refactoring away CustomSelectControl? I didn't see this mentioned in the description.

I've removed both CustomSelectControl fallbacks in 6f1b7cd, using Field and Select to preserve forwarded trigger props. Stable control and label hooks remain, and the retired layout classes are documented as a CSS breaking change in the changelog.

PR description updated, too.

Can you take a new look specifically at those changes? They can (will) be partially breaking for consumers who used to override styles.

I'm assuming a primitive-based approach was chosen here to keep the otherProps working, but I'm questioning whether this is a solid approach. I have a feeling this could be a half-measure that doesn't guarantee complete back compat while still preventing us from fully moving to the new system (where rest props are passed to SelectControl → Select.Root).

The main concrete gaps are:

size="small" is excluded by SelectControl’s public types.

Trigger callbacks such as onFocus and onBlur cannot reach the button. Extra props go to Select.Root, which renders no DOM element.

By the way, for these batch migrations, I think it may be better if we separated out the instances where it affects a public API surface with back compat considerations, and put them into smaller PRs that aren't mixed with the more mechanical migrations. Especially for the initial rounds where we don't have conventions established yet. There were a lot of things to consider, and I could only do a surface-level review here (mostly because a straightforward agent review barely turned up anything 😅).
