The small compact thumbnail uses 4px so the pattern reads well at 24px width. It could be 8px though if design wants..

Is the checkerboard itself really necessary in the compact view? Personally, it looks a bit weird to me... @WordPress/gutenberg-design

We'd still need to handle white pngs with transparent background.
