What?

Opts the list item block into the editing host behaviour, the same private setting the paragraph block uses since #81542. While a list item with sibling items is selected, the canvas wrapper is the contenteditable element, so a native selection can extend from one item into another on mobile devices.

Why?

On mobile web it is not possible to extend the selection across multiple list items, the selection is constrained to one item. Touch selection needs the wrapper to be the editing host before the gesture starts.

How?

  1. Opt in. packages/block-library/src/list-item/index.js sets the private editableRoot key.
  2. Sync the selection on keydown. A Tab right after a shift+arrow selection across items could read a stale store. The selection observer syncs it on keydown, as it does for copy, cut and paste.
  3. Keep the hosted field editable and focusable. Stripping its attributes does not work for list items: focus then lands on the ul or a parent container. This reverts the stripping and the code written around it in Rich text: fix iOS double tap selection, preventing focus capture under editable host #81042.
  4. Prevent the mousedown of a tap in the hosted block on iOS. iOS places the caret on the tap, before mousedown. The mousedown then only moves focus to the field and back, which cancels a double tap. Chromium places the caret in the mousedown, so the rule is iOS only.

Testing Instructions

  • Select a list item: the canvas body is contenteditable, the li still has contenteditable="true".
  • Select across two items, press Tab and Shift+Tab: both indent and outdent together.
  • iOS Safari: tap a list item, double tap a word in it. The word is selected.
  • Desktop click, drag and shift+click work as on trunk.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved caret placement, focus handling, and selection behavior when editing blocks, including list items.
    • Improved touch-based caret placement on iOS and synchronization of selections across blocks.
    • Updated keyboard navigation and drag selection behavior around editable content.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for editable list items and updated focus expectations when splitting blocks.

Walkthrough

The block editor now applies stricter editing-host eligibility and explicit content-editable checks. It updates caret placement, pointer and drag selection, keyboard navigation, and cross-block selection synchronization. The list-item block opts into editable-root hosting, with an end-to-end assertion for the resulting DOM structure.

Changes

Editable Root Focus and Selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Editable-root hosting and block opt-in
packages/block-library/src/list-item/index.js, packages/block-editor/src/components/rich-text/index.jsx, test/e2e/specs/editor/various/editable-root.spec.js
The list-item block opts into editable-root hosting. Rich-text wrappers update editing-host eligibility and set tabIndex and contentEditable values. The end-to-end test checks for a block nested inside a content-editable element.
Focus, caret, and rich-text handling
packages/block-editor/src/components/block-list/use-block-props/*, packages/block-editor/src/utils/dom.ts, packages/rich-text/src/owns-selection.js, packages/rich-text/src/hook/event-listeners/*, packages/block-editor/src/components/rich-text/index.jsx
Caret placement and focus handling use stricter editable-element and selection checks. Rich-text selection handling, focus capture, and editable-element lookup also change their content-editable checks.
Navigation and cross-block selection synchronization
packages/block-editor/src/components/writing-flow/*, test/e2e/specs/editor/various/splitting-merging.spec.js
Pointer and drag selection and keyboard navigation change how editable targets are handled. Cross-block selection synchronization runs before keydown handlers and skips dispatch when the store already matches. The focus-event test now expects two focusin events.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: ciampo

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to abfa2

Keyboard navigation out of an editable-root list item might land on the wrong element in edge cases. Restoring the fallback is a small fix and should be done before merge, but it is not a broad risk.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to abfa2

The changes retain explicit per-field editing restrictions and selection ownership checks. No introduced security bypass was established, but browser enforcement for mixed editable and read-only siblings, including interrupted gestures, remains incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure expansion is native editing and selection reach across sibling list items in the current editor canvas. The inspected callback path still attributes selection to block and field identities; broader service, tenant, or privileged persistence exposure was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Shared-host eligibility requires a selected block supporting the private capability, visual/default editing mode, multiple siblings, and default editing mode for every sibling. The selector does not evaluate every field-local disable condition; those restrictions remain enforced through each field's explicit contentEditable value.
  • observed — Selection endpoints retain clientId and attribute or instance identity. Partial endpoint updates are rejected when the opposite endpoint belongs to a different block root, preserving the existing ownership check despite broader native selection reach.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The pointer-focus listener restores its saved editability value on pointerup and pointercancel and unsubscribes its delegated listeners on teardown. The removed pointerdown guard broadens participation to fields whose attribute was not true, but restoring a saved false value does not itself enable such a field. Interleaved policy changes during a gesture remain unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate mixed enabled and read-only or binding-disabled list-item siblings in supported browsers, including pointer cancellation and editing-policy changes during a gesture. The inspected host-mode tests assert nesting, not enforcement of these editing restrictions.

Assert the selected list item's editable field.

The current selector can match the outer core/list block under the writing-flow host. It does not prove that the selected list item's RichText field switched to host mode. A regression that leaves that field independently editable can pass this test.

A Tab right after a shift+arrow selection of list items did nothing
with an editing host engaged: the native selection extends across the
items directly, the store learns about it from the asynchronous
selectionchange event, and the keydown can arrive first. The Tab
handler in use-multi-select-tab then either was not attached yet (it
attached only after a render showing the multi selection) or read a
store without the multi selection.

Attach the handler while the item is the selected block too, since the
item a multi selection is made from is already selected and rendered,
and read the selection from the store at event time. Sync the store
from the native selection on keydown capture in the selection observer,
the way it already does for copy, cut and paste, skipping the dispatch
when the store already reflects the block range so repeated keydowns do
not re-announce the multi selection.

The list item's multi selection Tab handler listens on the document in
the capture phase and can be added after the selection observer's
keydown sync, in which case it ran first and read a store that did not
know about the native selection yet. Listening on the window puts the
sync ahead of every document listener whatever the order they were
added in.

Same private setting the paragraph block uses. The list item's Enter,
Tab and merge handlers already listen through the owned listener that
fires when the editing host is the event target.

Under the editing host the selected block's field has no contenteditable
attribute, and the code resolved it as the block element instead. That
holds for a paragraph, whose element is the field, but a list item's
field is nested inside the item next to its inner list: select all
anchored the range on the item, Tab found the field not entirely
selected, and the caret placement collapsed at the item. The selection
helper, the block level caret placement and the drag selection start
now find the field by its block attribute key.

With the caret in a list item's field, the nearest focusable on the
navigation side was the item's own wrapper, which contains the field
and precedes it in document order, so arrow keys stayed in the item.
Ancestors of the target are not candidates.

When the selection moves to a block that can host, the wrapper engages
in a later render than the block's own effects: the field finds no host
and skips applying the store selection, and the block level placement
collapses the caret at the block wrapper, outside a nested field. The
selected field now engages the wrapper in a layout effect declared
before the rich text hook, so the host is in place when the hook
applies the selection. Its focus effect focuses through the field's own
focus(), which keeps the caret in the field when the host takes focus.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01XrG35JQKJBX1iNof5wtfjN
The hook applied a selection set from outside only while the element or
a focused editing host containing it held focus. When the host engages
for a newly selected field, focus is still on the element it takes over
from, inside the host: apply then too. Focus moves to the host first,
because applying a selection restores focus to the previously active
element afterwards, and a block wrapper regaining focus that way selects
its block, undoing the selection change. A value change keeps the
selection on the same condition when the caret is in the element.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01XrG35JQKJBX1iNof5wtfjN
The body is the document's active element whenever nothing has focus, so
comparing activeElement with the host mistook an unfocused host for a
focused one and skipped focusing it. Two flows broke: inserting a block
while a top document toolbar button holds focus left keystrokes on that
button, and a selection placed around a footnote marker before the field
turned inert was ignored by Backspace until the host took focus.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01XrG35JQKJBX1iNof5wtfjN
Applying a selection restored focus to the previously active element
whenever it moved, a rule meant for a toolbar button that keeps focus
while a format is applied. It also undid the move to an editing host
that contains the element, which is where focus belongs for a selection
inside it, and the previously focused block wrapper then re-selected its
block. Skip the restore for a host containing the element.

With that, the rich text hook no longer focuses the host itself: it
applies a selection set from outside while the element, or anything
focused inside a focused editing host, holds focus. The field's effect
that engages the host now also lets it take focus, ahead of the hook,
when focus was lost to the body or is inside the host, matching the
focus effect that runs after the hook for a field without a host. That
also covers a host still engaged for a field that stopped hosting, where
a nested editable cannot take focus.

The body is the active element whenever nothing has focus, so the hook,
the field's focus override and the block focus effect check `:focus`
rather than `activeElement`.

…ng flow

The wrapper became the editing host from a ref effect in the iframe,
after the selected block's field had already rendered without its
contenteditable attribute and after the rich text hook's layout effect
had looked for a host, and it stayed the host one commit after a field
stopped hosting. The field bridged both gaps with an effect of its own
that engaged the host and moved focus.

Do the switch in one place instead: the writing flow subscribes to the
store and, when the selection changes, makes the wrapper the host and
removes the contenteditable and tabindex attributes of the selected
block's fields in the same tick, and reverses both when the host moves
on or disengages. Rich text keeps rendering the same state for the
fields so a later render does not restore the attributes, and no longer
engages or focuses the host itself.

A hosting block has one field. For the paragraph it is the block element
itself, so a descendant lookup missed it, the host never made it inert
or editable again, and a merge that left the paragraph alone disengaged
the host without handing focus back to the field.

The list item's block element wraps its field and kept its tabindex
under the host, so a tap in the field focused the block element and
took focus from the host. On iOS that broke the double tap word
selection in list items, while the paragraph, whose block element is
the field, was fine. The switch now removes the block element's
tabindex too and restores it by its own mark, and the block props
render no tabindex for the hosted block.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01XrG35JQKJBX1iNof5wtfjN
Removing the block element's tabindex only moves the tap's focus target
up to the list block's element, and containers above that, so it does
not reach the wrapper on iOS and adds a selection round trip to every
desktop click into a list item.

This reverts commit f3c98e6.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
iOS places the caret on the tap itself, before the mouse events it
synthesizes from it. For a tap in the block the wrapper hosts, the
mousedown's default action is then only a focus move to the nearest
focusable ancestor, the list item's block element, which the handover
moves straight back to the wrapper. That flicker, within one task,
cancels the double tap word selection in list items. Paragraphs have
no focusable element between the tap and the wrapper and never had
the problem.

Prevent that mousedown on iOS WebKit, for touch, when the tapped block
is the hosted one and a focusable element sits between the tap and the
wrapper. Other engines place the caret in the mousedown's default
action itself, so it must run there.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The field lost its tabindex under the host so that a tap would find no
focus target between it and the wrapper. The mousedown rule for iOS
covers that for any focusable element in between now, as the list
item's block element already shows, so the switch only removes the
contenteditable attribute and the mark no longer carries a value.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The switch removed the attribute from the selected block's field under
the host so that a tap would find no focus target between it and the
wrapper. With the mousedown rule for iOS in place the field can keep
the attribute, as the simulator confirms for list items and
paragraphs, so the switch only engages and disengages the wrapper, the
hosted field mark goes, and the click path no longer strips the
attribute either. A multi-selected block's field still renders without
it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The hosted field renders with its contenteditable attribute and its
tabindex again, as it did before the iOS double tap fix, whose
mechanism the mousedown rule replaces. The code paths that were
rewritten for a field without them go back to what they were before
that fix: the rich text focus override and attribute logic, the
focus-first-element edge placement, the focus handler's caret rule,
the arrow navigation candidate filter, the drag selection field rule,
the focus capture guard, the field lookups in the dom utils and in
ownsSelection, the rich text hook's focus and selection handling, the
mousedown flip in click selection, and the observer's handover
condition. The observer keeps the keydown sync for multi-selected
list items. The switch only engages and disengages the wrapper.

Restore the missing-target fallback for editable-root navigation.

When the wrapper holds focus, onKeyDown resolves event.target === node to the editable element containing the selection. That element can be absent from focus.focusable.find( node ) while the wrapper is the editing host. The current slice( -1 + 1 ) then keeps all candidates and can select the wrong focusable. Restore the document-order fallback.

@ellatrix thanks for improving these nuance iOS interactions! 🙇🏻‍♂️

I wanted to share that I'm reverting editableRoot changes for the time being in wordpress-mobile/GutenbergKit#821. GutenbergKit trunk is currently using @wordpress/block-library@11.2.0. In my testing, the editorRoot change disrupts moving the caret between the post title and content, it also causes inconsistency in scrolling content into view above the virtual keyboard (video in the aforementioned PR).

It's unclear to me what the latest state of this work is, if the issues I describe are already addressed. I quickly tested @wordpress/block-library@12.0.0 and the issues appear present there as well. I can file a separate issue if that is helpful.

I'm curious if #84857 fixes it

@ellatrix no, from my testing in GBK, #84857 does not fix the issue.

@dcalhoun Thanks! I'll look into the issue, it's super important to me that this works in GBK ahead of the release, otherwise we're shipping something broken in core too
