What

Follow up to #82624, as discussed there.

The site editor's global routes (home, identity, styles) show the site, so they show the template around whatever the canvas is rendering.

#82624 did that with the defaultRenderingMode setting, but a default is overridden by the user's saved "Show template" preference, so the mode didn't stick and surfaced the bug that #82624 tried to fix.

Why

getDefaultRenderingMode checks the preference before editor settings:

How

fixedRenderingMode on EditorProvider replaces the resolution rather than joining it.

The provider publishes it to editor settings, where the two mode-switching controls (in the view menu and in the block inspector) read it and hide themselves.

setRenderingMode ignores any incoming mode trying to switch if fixedRenderingMode is set.

Replaces the defaultRenderingMode prop #82624 added to the site editor's Editor wrapper. The defaultRenderingMode setting itself is unchanged.

defaultRenderingMode = a starting point the user can override. fixedRenderingMode = what this editor is for. (open to naming here!)

Testing Instructions

Block theme, Settings → Reading set to a static page.
In the post editor, open any page and turn Show template off.
Appearance → Editor → Styles. The template renders, and "Show template" is absent from the View menu.
Open a page from Pages: post-only, "Show template" present and working.
Back on Styles, in the sidebar Summary open the Template row → Create new template. The notice appears without a "Back" action. From a page in step 4, "Back" is still offered and works.

Creating a custom template offers "Back" to return to the previous mode.

A fixed editor doesn't have one, so the action is dropped.

The document header back button is unaffected coz it navigates to another route rather than changing the mode in place.

This is testing great for me, and I like the idea of the controlled version of the rendering mode. Tested the following:

✅ Template mode toggling works nicely in the post editor
✅ That value is ignored in the site editor and the styles tab when the site is set to use a static page (i.e. the template is always rendered)
✅ Editing a page via the Pages list in the site editor still allows options to toggle template preview
✅ Editing the homepage directly in the site editor when it's set as the static homepage forces the template to show, and there's no option to hide it. And in this mode you're just editing the content of the page, but you can still double-click to edit the template (or switch to edit the template via the sidebar)

Just left a tiny comment nit and a question re: the e2e test in case it's potentially flaky at one step.

Slightly related to the rename, the key's read in three places now (here, preview-dropdown/index.jsx:68 and in block-theme.jsx#L39 .

Would a small private selector be worth it while you're in there, so whatever the name ends up being only lives in one spot?

The site editor's global routes (home, identity, styles) show the site rather than one piece of content, so they show the template around whatever the canvas is rendering. #82624 did that with the `defaultRenderingMode` editor setting, but a default is what the user's saved "Show template" preference overrides, so the mode did not hold for anyone who had turned that preference off. Add a `fixedRenderingMode` prop to `EditorProvider`. It replaces the resolution rather than joining it, so the preference cannot override it. The provider publishes it to editor settings, where the two controls that switch modes read it and hide themselves, and `setRenderingMode` reads it to ignore anything that moves away from it. Replaces the `defaultRenderingMode` prop added to the site editor's Editor wrapper in #82624. The `defaultRenderingMode` editor setting itself is unchanged.

…is fixed Creating a custom template offers "Back" to return to the previous rendering mode. An editor with a fixed mode has no other mode to return to, so the action did nothing when clicked. The header back button is unaffected: it navigates to another route, which then resolves its own mode, rather than changing the mode in place.

The prop names what the editor is in, so the plain name says it. The local it shadows in the shared Editor is renamed to `currentRenderingMode`, which is what that value is: the mode now, rather than the mode this editor was told to be in.

…nce over REST Two points from review. The settings effect wrote `renderingMode` but never cleared it when the provider went away, so the value outlived it: whatever mounted in the editor's place kept the mode, such as the style book on `/styles`. Clear it on the way out. The e2e set its preference by dispatching in the page, which returns before the value is persisted, so the editor could read it too late. The cleanup that clears `renderingMode` on unmount lived in the effect that syncs editor settings, so it also ran whenever the settings changed: on the styles route, with every edit. Each run cleared the mode and set it again straight after. Nothing could act on the gap, but only because of when the two dispatches happen. Give the cleanup its own effect, which runs only when the editor goes away. The rendering mode preference is keyed by theme, and the e2e named the theme separately from the fixture that activates it. Had the fixture changed, the preference would have been saved under a theme nobody reads, and the test would still have passed, since the prop forces the mode regardless. Name the theme once, and move the front page and preference setup inside the `try`, so the `finally` also cleans up when a setup step fails.

Once clearing the mode on unmount moved to its own effect, the comment on the settings sync named the case that effect now handles. What the sync still covers is an editor that stays mounted but loses the prop: going from Home to Navigation keeps the same editor on the front page, nothing unmounts, and only this sync clears the mode.

`setRenderingMode` returns without changing anything when the editor was given a mode through its `renderingMode` prop and the call asks for a different one, so a caller could not tell why nothing happened. Log a warning, shown when `SCRIPT_DEBUG` is on, naming the ignored mode and the one the editor keeps.

Editor: Clear the rendering mode from the settings sync's cleanup
