What?

Updates every direct @playwright/test and playwright dependency from 1.62.1 to 1.63.0. It also adopts the new visible locator filter and restores five Firefox drag-and-drop scenarios that the old Playwright workarounds skipped.

Why?

This keeps Gutenberg's browser test tooling and bundled browser versions current.

How?

The update aligns the Playwright versions used by the root tooling, E2E tests, performance tests, Storybook tests, Vitest Browser Mode, and the flaky-test reporter. The drag helper now moves the pointer gradually across the editor iframe boundary so Firefox dispatches the drag events. That stepped move also satisfies Playwright's cross-browser dragover requirement, so the old extra same-position move is gone.

Release notes TL;DR

Release span: 1.62.1 → 1.63.0. There are no intermediate stable Playwright releases in this range.

Relevant to this repository

The bundled browsers move to Chromium 153, Firefox 155, and WebKit 26.6. This is the main compatibility risk because it affects E2E, performance, Storybook, and Browser Mode tests. The full CI matrix is the best regression signal.
Existing retained traces and Storybook HTML reports gain better timing views, network attribution, and accessibility fixes without configuration changes.
Ubuntu 20.04 support was removed upstream. Gutenberg's Playwright jobs use newer Ubuntu runners, so no workflow change is required.
The lockfile no longer contains Playwright's optional fsevents dependency. This is expected after Playwright updated its file-watching dependency.
The runner includes a teardown fix that avoids force-killing teardown work. This can reduce teardown-related flakes without a local change.

Applied in this PR

Removed the three Firefox fixme calls linked to Playwright #17761. The real Gutenberg tests exposed a second issue: a direct pointer jump did not dispatch the drag into the editor iframe. Moving into the iframe in steps makes the block, pattern, and synced-pattern scenarios pass in Firefox. It also makes the two related drag-cancellation scenarios runnable, so their stale Firefox skips are gone. All five scenarios pass three consecutive runs in both Firefox and Chromium. The new Firefox snapshot matches the existing Chromium and WebKit snapshots exactly.
Removed the inserter drag helper's redundant extra mouse move. Its 10-step iframe movement already emits dragover in Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. The two single-step helpers that still need repeated moves now link to Playwright's current drag guidance instead of the closed issue.
Replaced the site-preview test's CSS :visible pseudo-class with Playwright 1.63's locator.visible() filter.

Remaining follow-up opportunities

The new trace snapshot API can add ARIA and screen snapshots to retained E2E traces. It is worth a measured experiment for failure diagnostics, but it should remain disabled in performance tests because those intentionally avoid trace overhead.
Structured test.step parameters and subtitles could improve diagnostics for selected dynamic steps. A broad conversion is not justified because the current custom reporters do not consume this metadata.
Test locks may help a future E2E parallelization project. They do not help the current E2E configuration, which runs with one worker.

Workarounds to keep

The two single-step drag helpers in draggable-blocks.spec.js and paragraph.spec.js still require two mouse moves. Playwright closed #17153 as browser-aligned behavior, and its current documentation still requires two moves before all browsers dispatch dragover.
The WebKit iframe-drag skips, headless WebKit dataTransfer workaround, and Safari list-view drag workaround have no matching Playwright 1.63 fix. The Safari workaround also protects supported product behavior, so a bundled browser update alone cannot remove it.
The Firefox console-warning filter references a Mozilla issue closed as incomplete, not a confirmed fix. Keep it.
No internal patch-package patch for Playwright exists to remove.

Other 1.63 additions do not improve current repository usage enough to justify changes in this PR. These include selectorless frame locators, multiple HTTP credentials, Origin Private File System storage state, component-test changes, extra reporter flags, and typed API response bodies.

Testing Instructions

Run npm exec --no -- playwright --version and confirm it prints Version 1.63.0.

Run npm exec --no -- playwright screenshot about:blank /tmp/playwright-smoke.png and confirm Chromium starts and writes the screenshot.
