What

With a static front page, clicking Revisions in the Site Editor's Styles sidebar opened the page editor with no Styles panel and no way to reach the revision history.

Why

The Styles sidebar only renders when the post type is wp_template or the rendering mode is template-locked. With a static front page the Site Editor canvas is a page in post-only mode, so it never mounts.

How

Default the global routes (home, identity, styles) to template-locked. They show the site, not one piece of content. Editor and entity resolution are unchanged.
Set the styles path before opening the sidebar, and skip the open-time reset when a path is already selected.
Reset styles navigation on the edit-to-view transition, covering every exit rather than just the Back button.

Known limitation

getDefaultRenderingMode checks the saved "Show template" preference before editor settings, so it wins:

Anyone who has switched "Show template" off on a page in that theme still sees the bug on these routes.

Testing Instructions

Block theme, Settings → Reading set to a static page ("Home").
Appearance → Editor → Styles. Make and save a change so a revision exists.
Click Revisions. The revisions list opens with the Styles sidebar visible.
With the panel still open, click Open Navigation to leave.
Click the site preview. It should enter the editor.
Set Reading back to Your latest posts and confirm Revisions still works.
In the post editor, open a page and confirm Styles is hidden and "Show template" is still off by default.

When the site uses a static front page, the Site Editor canvas edits that page rather than a template, so the rendering mode is `post-only` and the Styles sidebar is not rendered. Clicking Revisions then opened the page editor with no Styles panel and no visible way to reach the revision history. Set the rendering mode to `template-locked` when opening Global Styles from the Site Editor sidebar and from the "Open style revisions" command, which is the state the "Show template" workaround produces. Only the session rendering mode is set, not the persisted default, so this does not change how the user's pages open afterwards. Fixes #82172

Replaces the previous approach, which set the rendering mode to `template-locked` when opening Styles. That leaked: nothing resets the rendering mode on navigation, so the canvas stayed in template mode after leaving the styles editor and the site preview was no longer clickable. The gate this works around arrived with #72681, which moved Global Styles from edit-site to the shared editor package. Before that, edit-site rendered the sidebar as `isBlockBasedTheme && <GlobalStylesSidebar />`, with no post type or rendering mode condition. The migration applied the post editor's rule, "only while the template is on screen", to both editors. That is right for the post editor but narrowed the site editor, where a static front page is a page in `post-only` mode. Add an `alwaysShowGlobalStyles` prop, set by the site editor, restoring its previous behaviour and leaving the post editor untouched. No state to reset, so every exit path from the styles editor stays correct. Fixes #82172

The home, identity and styles routes show the site rather than one piece of content, so they now default to `template-locked`. With a static front page the canvas is that page, and the Styles sidebar is only offered in template mode, so it was missing there. Replaces the `alwaysShowGlobalStyles` prop, so `Editor` is unchanged. Entity resolution is untouched.

That was option 2! Nice, let's try that.

Tried that. It works... 🎉 with a catch: the saved "Show template" preference is checked before editor settings in getDefaultRenderingMode so it wins. Added under "Known limitation" in the PR desc.

So anyone who has switched "Show template" off on a page in that theme gets the bug back on the global routes. defaultRenderingMode is post-only.

Random options:

let an explicit prop outrank the preference/default setting === pass a mode to Editor directly,
or ship it and treat that case as a known limitation.

I'm ok shipping this for now. What I would say is that I do think these pages should be considered special in the sense that I don't mind if we force "template mode" locked on these without possibility to change it at all but that requires design input and direction.

Replaces the route name list in useSpecificEditorSettings with a prop each global route passes, so adding a route makes the choice explicit rather than relying on a list elsewhere staying in step. `isHomeRoute` could not carry this: it marks the "/" route so a classic theme falls back to the site preview, and identity and styles need the same rendering mode.

`isGlobalRoute` described where the component was used rather than what it should do, which means nothing to Editor or to useSpecificEditorSettings. Pass `defaultRenderingMode` instead, so each route states the mode it wants.

Been trying to work out a way to do this. I haven't come up with much else:

Set the mode directly (setRenderingMode) - was my first attempt and ran into race condition
A second higher-precedence setting like enforcedRenderingMode - another setting? 🙃
A prop on the shared Editor to force rendering mode, e.g., renderingMode - works, but touches packages/editor

I like 3: it's smaller, but a public API change so wary.

Agree that shipping this would probably cover most cases though initially. Thanks a lot for all the feedback!

The effect below will also run on a fresh mount, so a stale stylesPath left over from an unmount can be treated as an active request. I think this can be reproduced if you:

Open Revisions on /styles?canvas=edit,

Jump to a template via the command palette
You'll see the editor subtree remounts, the reset is skipped, and the revisions canvas renders instead of the template's block editor.

I updated to checks the route location current state every render.

Before I was checking against usePrevious, which never fired on a route change it appears.

With no static front page, these routes pass templateId={ undefined }, so hasTemplate is false and hasResolvedDefaultMode never becomes true. So setRenderingMode( defaultMode ) won't fire and the rendering mode would just go with whatever the previously edited entity left.

Well this is the correct behavior, it will render the template in this case.

Any route change that keeps canvas=edit would leave stylesPath/showStylebook set because the new cleanup effect only fires on an edit to view transition.

Fixed. Similar to above

Revisions and the style book render in place of the block editor, so leaving them open showed the styles canvas where the block editor was expected: navigating from /styles to a template while staying in edit mode landed on the template with the revisions view still on screen. The cleanup compared against the previous value, which a route change never observes: each route supplies its own element for the preview area, so navigating remounts this component and the previous value starts undefined. Check the current state on every render instead, and cover any route that is not styles in edit mode rather than only edit to view.

I think it might. Even though some of the routes don't specify a postType it eventually lands on getDefaultRenderingMode which returns post-only as the fallback.

The site editor's global routes (home, identity, styles) show the site rather than one piece of content, so they show the template around whatever the canvas is rendering. #82624 did that with the `defaultRenderingMode` editor setting, but a default is what the user's saved "Show template" preference overrides, so the mode did not hold for anyone who had turned that preference off. Add a `fixedRenderingMode` prop to `EditorProvider`. It replaces the resolution rather than joining it, so the preference cannot override it. The provider publishes it to editor settings, where the two controls that switch modes read it and hide themselves, and `setRenderingMode` reads it to ignore anything that moves away from it. Replaces the `defaultRenderingMode` prop added to the site editor's Editor wrapper in #82624. The `defaultRenderingMode` editor setting itself is unchanged.
