What?

Relates to #79285 (comment), and #82599.

The block alignment menu now lists Wide width and Full width as unavailable when the parent layout withholds them, instead of removing them without explanation. Blocks whose only alignments are wide and full — Group and Columns — keep an alignment control in layouts that offer neither, where the control previously disappeared entirely.

Why?

When a container's layout does not allow wide or full alignments, those options are silently dropped from the menu. Nothing says they were ever possible, or that something above the block took them away. From the user's side the options are simply missing, and the common conclusion is that the editor is broken or has lost their setting.

This is one of the most reported sources of confusion in site setup: people spend a long time looking for a full-width option that is not there, or set one and cannot understand why nothing changed.

Group makes it worse. It supports only wide and full, so in a layout offering neither there is nothing left to show and the alignment control vanishes completely — from the block people most often reach for when they want something to span the page.

This PR only states that an alignment is unavailable. Saying why, and offering a route to the template or parent block that caused it, is a follow-up.

A new useAlignmentMenu hook splits the alignments a block supports into the ones the parent layout offers and the wide alignments it withholds, so the toolbar control and the menu answer the same question from one place.

align.jsx renders whenever there is something to say, which now includes having only withheld alignments to report.
The menu splices the withheld alignments into the position they would have occupied — directly after None — and renders them disabled, with Not available as their description.
When every supported alignment is withheld, None is synthesised so the disabled entries have somewhere to anchor.

Withheld entries use aria-disabled rather than disabled, so they stay focusable and their explanation is reachable by keyboard and screen reader.

Flex and Grid parents place their children themselves and offer no alignments to any block, so nothing is reported there: those layouts are not withholding anything, they simply do not do widths.

Behaviour change worth calling out

This makes the alignment control appear on Group and Columns inside flow layouts, where previously there was none. That is the intent — those blocks support only wide and full, so a flow parent leaves them with nothing and the control disappears rather than explaining itself — but it is a visible change to when the toolbar button is present, and worth agreeing on explicitly.

Testing Instructions

You need a container with a flow layout. The simplest is a Group with "Inner blocks use content width" switched off, or the Content block in a template with the same setting off.

Add a Group and switch off "Inner blocks use content width" in its Layout panel.
Insert an Image inside it, select it, and open the alignment dropdown in the block toolbar.
Expected: None, Wide width — Not available, Full width — Not available, Align left, Align center, Align right. Previously only None and the three alignments appeared.
Choose Full width. Nothing should happen and the menu should stay open.
Insert a Group inside the outer Group and select it. Expected: an alignment control showing None, Wide width — Not available, Full width — Not available. Previously there was no alignment control at all.

Please also confirm nothing changed where alignments are available:

Switch "Inner blocks use content width" back on. Wide and Full should be enabled and behave exactly as before, keeping their existing "Max 600px wide" descriptions.
A block inside a Row or a Grid should still show no alignment control.
A block that does not support wide or full — a Separator, say — should not gain unavailable entries.

Testing Instructions for Keyboard

With a block selected inside the flow Group, press Alt + F10 to move focus to the block toolbar.
Arrow to the alignment control and press Enter to open it.
Arrow down through the menu. The unavailable entries must be reachable, must announce their disabled state, and must announce "Not available".
Press Enter on one. Nothing should change.

Nice exploration here! It's looking pretty good to me so far for the intended use case, e.g. when a block is inside a flow-layout group block, then I see the disabled options here:

A question about scope: it's possible for themes to not offer wide or full alignments at all. For example, classic themes that don't add add_theme_support( 'align-wide' ); or block themes that don't set settings.layout at all (for this case, you can edit TT5 and remove wideSize or the whole layout object).

In that case, I'd expect the options to still be hidden rather than displayed but not available, as in these cases the theme itself is curating its options.

So, for this PR, can we restrict this behaviour so it only applies for when the inherited layout prevents wide/full alignments but the theme itself still supports those alignments?

Another question: at the root level of a template, should we still be showing the disabled controls? I.e. if I'm editing the root level of a template it should already be visible that the block extends edge to edge across the template. To reproduce, go to add a paragraph or heading at the root of a template and this is what I see in the dropdown:

I think it's arguably fine to show "Not available" in this case, as it really isn't available, just wanted to double-check that for this case it's intentional.

Also, as an aside I left some feedback on #82607 — I think I'd avoid adding a notice to the right-hand sidebar, and instead focus a bit more on the controls here. Since these are focusable, I'm wondering if we can add the explanation for why the control is disabled as a tooltip instead?

This is solid feedback, thank you both. I worked with my little bot assistant and believe I've addressed the feedback—showing but as disabled in cases where an ancestor or other context restricts the widths, and not showing when they are simply not enabled at the theme level.

Good question, and it's intentional. The same rendering is doing work at the root of post content: a Content block with "Inner blocks use content width" toggled off is the case behind a slew of issues I found with this, regardless of what's visibly possible in that context. I may be missing nuance from your question, of course let me know.

Hmm, useAvailableAlignments adds a store subscription so it's not great that we're calling it three times here.

Potentially we might extract the non-store logic from useAvailableAlignments into a separate function that takes all the needed values as parameters, and which we could use here instead?

To respond to some of the open questions, and some of this Claude co-authored, just for clarity:

On the space between the alignment and "Not available", good catch. The rendering turns out to be fine. The label and the status are separate spans inside .components-menu-item__info-wrapper, which is display: flex; flex-direction: column. That blockifies both, so the accessible name computation puts a space between them. What you saw in VoiceOver is the correct behaviour. The glued string in the test is misleading: it asserts textContent, which is raw DOM concatenation and ignores CSS.

Claude suggested we could add a test like this:

✅ Template with constrained post content block shows available alignments with and without template preview mode
✅ Template with flow post content block shows disabled alignments with and without template preview mode
✅ Blocks at the root of a template or synced pattern or template part show the alignments as disabled
✅ Block themes that disable content & wide size show no wide/full options at all
✅ Classic themes that enable wide/full layout continue to show those alignments (e.g. TT theme)
✅ Classic themes that don't enable wide/full layout continue to not show those alignments (e.g. Twenty Seventeen theme)
