What?

Closes #31112

Makes the Query Loop block's taxonomy filters browsable. When you open the Categories field (or Tags, or any other taxonomy), it now lists the existing terms. Before, you had to remember and type a term name before anything appeared.

The controls move from FormTokenField to SearchableChipSelectControl from @wordpress/ui.

Why?

From the fifth FSE Outreach Program call for testing, two separate testers reported the same thing:

When selecting the category of the Query block, it would be nice to be able to select from a list of existing categories instead of suggestions from input. Because I do not remember all the categories.

FormTokenField only requested terms after the user typed, so you could not reach a term if you did not know its name.

The component choice follows #64086 (comment), which named SearchableChipSelectControl as the closest replacement.

How?

All in packages/block-library/src/query/edit/inspector-controls/taxonomy-controls.jsx. Hierarchical and flat taxonomies load their terms in different ways, like the post editor does.

  • Hierarchical taxonomies (Categories). The whole term tree is loaded in one go (per_page: -1, _fields: 'id,name, parent'), like the post editor's hierarchical term selector. The list is filtered in the browser.
  • Flat taxonomies (Tags). These can be very large, so they are searched on the server, like the post editor's flat term selector. With no search, up to 100 terms are listed. A search returns up to 20. The search waits 250ms after typing. Until the new results arrive, the previous results stay on screen, filtered in the browser to match what was typed.
  • Hierarchy. A nested term shows the names of all the terms above it, like 2023 › Sports, as the item's description. It shows under the name in the list, in a smaller and lighter style, and is the option's accessible description. Chips show it after the name, smaller and lighter, and are named like News (2023 › Sports) for screen readers. This way, two terms with the same name can be told apart, even when their parents also have the same name.
  • Include and exclude. A term that is selected in one control is hidden from the other control. This happens in the browser, so selecting a term does not reload the other control's list when it isn't searching. To make up for the hidden terms, the list asks the server for that many extra terms, up to the REST API limit of 100.
  • Loading. Terms are only requested when the control is first opened, or when terms are already selected. statusContent shows a spinner and "Loading…" while a request is running, and after that a visually hidden result count, following the component's async example. When the server has more matching tags than it returned, statusContent says so instead: "Showing 20 of 57 results. Refine your search to see more." when searching, or "Showing the first 100. Search to find more." when browsing, following UI: Document limited SearchableChipSelectControl results #84077. emptyContent is null while loading, because Combobox.Empty is a live region and would otherwise announce "No results found." too early.
  • Keyboard. After typing, the first matching term is highlighted, so Enter selects it. While the list is still loading and nothing is highlighted, Enter is ignored, so the typed text is not lost.
  • Announcements. Adding or removing a term is announced to screen readers, for example "Category added" or "Tag removed". This uses the same strings as the post editor.
  • Selection. value is updated right away when a term is selected. If you select a second term before the first one has loaded, the first one is not lost.

Stored data does not change: plain term ids in taxQuery.include / taxQuery.exclude. Ids that no longer belong to a real term are still removed, as before.

getTermIdByTermValue() is removed. It turned typed text into a term id. The new control works with items, so nothing uses it any more.

Not addressed here: after typing a search, selecting an item closes the popup. Base UI does this whenever the input has text and is outside the popup. So it happens in any SearchableChipSelectControl with an outside input. The post editor's Tags field does the same on trunk.

Trade-offs

  • A Tags search does not trim the text, so news with a space at the end finds nothing.
  • If more than 100 tags are selected, the chips do not show. The request for them asks for more than the REST API limit of 100. This should be rare.
  • In Categories, only the term's own name is searched, so typing a parent's name does not show the terms under it.
  • Both the include and the exclude control announce "Category added", not "Category excluded".
  • If terms are already selected, the whole category tree loads as soon as the block settings show, not only when the control is opened.
  • A very large category tree loads slowly, 100 terms per request. The post editor has the same cost.
  • Hierarchical and flat taxonomies have two code paths in the same component.
  • The Tags list can show a few less than 100 terms, because terms selected in the other control are hidden in the browser.
  • The "of N" total can be slightly too high when a term selected in the other control matches the search but was not in the returned page.
  • Tags chips are rebuilt a bit more often than needed.

Testing Instructions

  1. Create several categories:
    • two with the same name under different parents (for example News under both Sports and Technology),
    • two News terms one level deeper (for example 2023 › Sports › News and 2024 › Sports › News),
    • one with an ampersand (Q&A).
  2. Create a few tags.
  3. Add a Query Loop block to a page, select it, and turn on Taxonomies from the ⋮ options menu in the Filters panel.
  4. Click Categories without typing anything. The existing categories are listed. This is the fix.
  5. Check that the nested News terms show Sports, Technology, 2023 › Sports and 2024 › Sports under the name in the list, and after the name in a smaller, lighter style in the chips. Check that they still do when you type News.
  6. Check that Q&A shows a normal &.
  7. Select several terms quickly, one after the other. All of them should stay selected.
  8. Open Tags and type part of a tag name. The matching tags should stay in the list while the search loads.
  9. Select a term in Categories. Check that Exclude: Categories does not list it. Check that the block still filters correctly, and that reloading the page keeps the selection.
  10. Create more than 100 tags (npm run wp-env -- run cli wp term generate post_tag --count=120). Open Tags without typing and check for "Showing the first 100. Search to find more." Type Tag and check for "Showing 20 of 120 results. Refine your search to see more."
  11. Select Tag 1 in Tags, then type Tag 1 in Exclude: Tags. There should still be 20 results, without Tag 1.

Testing Instructions for Keyboard

  1. With the Categories field focused, press Down to open the list without typing.
  2. Move with Up / Down, select with Enter, close with Escape.
  3. Type part of a term name and press Enter. The first matching term is selected.
  4. Tab to a chip's Remove button and press Enter or Space.
  5. With a screen reader on, check that adding and removing a term is announced.

Use of AI Tools

This PR was authored with Claude Code (Claude Opus 5). The design was decided interactively — scope, the browse limit and ordering, lazy fetching, and how to convey hierarchy were chosen by me at decision points rather than by the model. The implementation, the e2e tests, and the changelog entry were written by the model under that direction.

Verification I had it perform, and reviewed: each e2e test was confirmed to fail on the unmodified code and pass with the change, rather than only asserting the passing state. Behaviour was exercised in wp-env against seeded categories and tags, including eleven categories sharing the name "Events" under different parents. npm run typecheck and npm run lint:js are clean.

I have reviewed the change and take responsibility for it.

The SearchableChipSelectControl is working nicely in my experiments as well, though it still needs a status announcement mechanism to match old a11y behavior (#82195).

@mirka, should we wait for a new status-related prop or do this declaratively via speak?

The statusContent prop has been added to SearchableChipSelectControl in #82592.

The Async story should demonstrate a standard pattern for the status. Apparently the status announcements are only necessary in async use cases, so it's no longer built-in like in FormTokenField.

While testing I hit something that turned out not to be this PR's doing, but is worth recording somewhere. AI tells me it's not my work but the component itself. Here's a video to better explain but essentially if you search and select a result, the pop up closes unexpectedly. I would expect I could keep selecting multiple items:

query.loop.pop.up.collapse.mov

AI info

Browse without typing and it stays open, so you can select several in a row. The asymmetry is in Base UI (@base-ui/react 1.8.0), in AriaCombobox's multi-select branch after a selection:

const wasFiltering = inputRef.current ? inputRef.current.value.trim() !== '' : false;
if ( ! wasFiltering ) {
return; // nothing typed → stays open
}
if ( store.state.inputInsidePopup ) {
setInputValue( '', … ); // input inside popup → clear query, stay open
} else {
setOpen( false, eventDetails ); // input outside popup → closes
}

inputInsidePopup is hasPositionerParent || inline, and SearchableChipSelect renders its input in the InputGroup/Chips — the anchor, not the popup — so it is always false.

I ruled this PR out by rebuilding and retesting with our setSearch('')/setInputValue('') reset removed, and again with filter={ null } removed. It closes in all three cases. The post editor's Tags field does the same thing on trunk, which is flat-term-selector rather than anything here — and it is more noticeable there, since that control only shows suggestions once you type, so every selection closes the popup.

Flagging it in case it is worth a look at the component level, since it affects any SearchableChipSelectControl with an external input and server-side search.

Thanks for bearing with me as I wade in here. @ciampo I opted for () to show parent categories when searching, like so:

update.query.loop.cat.mov

Overall, the experience feels pretty solid, minus the above comment showing a less than ideal search and add multiple items experience.

if you search and select a result, the pop up closes unexpectedly. I would expect I could keep selecting multiple items

When I first noticed this I reported it as an issue to Base UI, but was ultimately convinced by the maintainers that this was indeed the correct default behavior. As I realized in the issue, "keeping the input value after selection is great when wanting to select multiple Star Wars movies, but slower when you want to select multiple unrelated movies". And we can't reliably predict which the user wants to do at a given moment.

It is possible to code it so the popup stays open, either in the wp-ui component or just for this specific use case. But it just makes a certain kind of interaction faster (I want to select multiple items that match the same query), while making the others slower (I want to select one item per query).

Makes sense. I don’t think it’s worth changing just yet without user feedback as I can see a use case for each. In general, when selecting items and searching, I like when modals simply stay open until I’m done. I don’t want this to block or slow down the PR though, especially when this component is used elsewhere. Thanks for explaining and giving context!

I second this - closing feels like the right behavior. In any case it is something we can iterate on if we reconsider.

I pushed some updates based on the review feedback:

Main changes

  • Categories load the whole term tree. Like the post editor's hierarchical term selector, we now load all categories in one request (per_page: -1) and filter the list in the browser. This lets us show the full parent path, like News (2023 › Sports) and News (2024 › Sports), so terms whose parents also share a name can be told apart. Labels no longer show plain "News" while the parent is loading. @ciampo, this should basically be addressing both of your comments.
  • Tags still search on the server, like the post editor's flat term selector, because a site can have a very large number of tags. While a search loads, the matching results stay on screen, so the list doesn't go empty.
  • Include and exclude: a term selected in one control is hidden from the other one in the browser. Selecting a term no longer reloads the other control's list.
  • Enter: after typing, the first matching term is highlighted, so Enter selects it. While the list is still loading, Enter is ignored, so the typed text is not lost.
  • Screen readers: adding or removing a term is announced ("Category added", "Tag removed"), using the same strings as the post editor.
  • I added e2e tests for all of the above, rebased on trunk, and updated the PR description.

Decisions

  • Categories and Tags work in different ways on purpose, the same as in the post editor. Categories are usually small enough to load whole, but tags can be much larger.
  • We tried getting the hierarchical term parent with _embed=up, but it only goes one level up. Loading the whole tree was the only way to show the full path without extra requests.

Trade-offs

There are a few behavioral details that I've considered and thought reasonable as they are right now, but I'm open to discussion.

  • A Tags search doesn't trim the text, so news with a space at the end finds nothing.
  • If more than 100 tags are selected, the chips don't show. This should be a rare edge case - who really filters by 100 tags?
  • In Categories, typing a parent's name also shows the terms under it - I actually appreciate this and think it's a useful feature.
  • Both the include and the exclude control say "Category added". We could use more specific strings "Category excluded" or "Category included" but it would require extra strings. I chose to reuse existing strings.
  • If terms are already selected, the whole category tree loads when the block settings show.
  • A very large category tree loads slowly. This is the same as in the post editor, so I think it's fine.
  • There are two code paths in the same component, one for hierarchical and one for flat taxonomies.
  • The Tags list can show a few less than 100 terms, because terms selected in the other control are hidden.

Open to feedback!

Let's wait on @mirka 's thoughts re using speak() vs adding a dedicaged Status component.

Following @mirka's comment, the result count uses statusContent, like the Async story. For "Category added" / "Tag removed" I used speak(), the same as the post editor's flat term selector. Happy to change it if you recommend a better way.

BTW, the result count now uses the statusContent prop from #82592, and adding or removing a term is announced with speak(), like in the post editor. I think that's a reasonable compromise.

One more thing we'll need to consider potentially for a follow-up: the Terms Query block's "include" control still has the old picker that can't browse terms, so the two pickers will drift apart.

I've been getting an increasing amount of feedback to be careful about shipping UX regressions in the Gutenberg plugin, so I'd prefer to patch the escape key behavior first (in progress at #84172).

Cool, happy to wait for that one to land, and thanks for picking it up so quickly!

I would also like to remove these limit statuses for now, since I think they need some design refinement. And the lack of these statuses is an existing shortcoming, so it wouldn't count as a UX regression even if we left it out.

Just to be sure: are you suggesting to just remove them or to wait for them to be refined? I personally felt like it's more useful to have them (even if not with an ideal design) rather than not have them at all (which could feel confusing). Let me know!

I originally meant to remove (punt) from this PR, but I get your point too about the functional improvement regardless of the rough visual. I just haven't had time to look at the output and implications of #84077 yet, it's still a robo-PR.

How about we add a --wpds-dimension-padding-xs padding-block to <LimitedTermCount> so it looks a bit less rough? That may be an acceptable compromise for merge, given the usefulness.

Limit status with padding

Then I'll follow up in #84077 and work with our designers to refine.

annezazu and others added 21 commits October 8, 2026 14:21
The Query Loop taxonomy filters used `FormTokenField`, which only fetched
terms once the user typed. Testers reported not remembering their category
names, so there was no way to reach a term without already knowing it.

Switch the controls to `SearchableChipSelectControl` from `@wordpress/ui`,
which the FormTokenField v2 issue names as the closest replacement. Opening
a control now lists the existing terms; typing narrows them through the same
server side search as before.

Stored data is unchanged: the controls still write plain term ids into
`taxQuery.include` / `taxQuery.exclude`. Term identity now comes from the
selected item, so the case-insensitive name matching that mapped typed text
back to an id is no longer reachable and is removed.

Only the opposite control's terms are excluded from the list, which still
prevents a term being both included and excluded. Terms selected in this
control stay listed and can be deselected there, and because selecting one
no longer changes the query, the list is not refetched mid-selection.

Fixes WordPress#31112.
Three things came out of review.

Selecting two terms quickly dropped the first. `value` only caught up once
the request for the selected terms resolved, so a selection made before it
did was computed from the stale value and replaced its predecessor. Update
`value` from the selection right away, as the post editor's flat term
selector does.

A hierarchical taxonomy can hold terms that share a name under different
parents, and a bare name gave no way to tell them apart. Name a nested term
after the term it sits under. The label is also the option's accessible
name and the component has no slot for secondary text, so this is the one
place the context can go. Parents missing from the list or from a search
result are looked up on their own, so the context survives a search.

Announce the list status through `statusContent`, added to
`SearchableChipSelectControl` since this was opened, rather than through
`emptyContent`. A spinner and "Loading…" while a request is pending, then a
visually hidden count of what was found, matching the component's async
example. `Combobox.Empty` is itself a live region, so it is given `null`
while pending rather than being left to claim there are no results before
anything has looked.

Covered by two end to end tests, both confirmed to fail without the change.

wporg-sync pushed a commit to WordPress/WordPress that referenced this pull request Oct 20, 2026
This updates the pinned commit hash of the Gutenberg repository from
7b95ee96b54de2e35886971ccf7eb449c324c830 (version 24.2.0) to
be6a50be6834e922b9db12c75c9a2cd817b2db59.

covers the 24.3.0 RC1 release plus the changes cherry-picked to the branch
after it was tagged: Gutenberg PRs 85155, 82730, 71634, and 81644.
