Image: measure the lightbox container, not the image's parent - #82312
Conversation
`setButtonStyles` measured `ref.parentElement` to place the lightbox trigger button, which assumes the `img` is a direct child of the figure. Plugins can wrap it - Modern Image Formats wraps it in a `picture` with `display: contents`, which generates no box, so `clientWidth` and `clientHeight` read `0`. The button was then offset by its own size, landing outside the figure and adding horizontal page scroll, and the `figcaption` lookup missed so the caption height was never subtracted. Measure `ref.closest( '.wp-lightbox-container' )` instead. That is the element the button is positioned against, it is always present because `block_core_image_render_lightbox()` adds the class, and it resolves to the same node as `parentElement` when the image is not wrapped. Thanks for the PR! I believe this approach is correct.
Something else to consider is that the buttons displayed on hover are assumed to be positioned next to the image.

If the element next to the img is not a button, this assumption will not hold true, so it would be better to change the selector as follows.

Regarding this matter, I noticed that an individual PR has already been submitted. Let's merge that first. #70800 |

1052-1052: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winAssert the trigger position relative to the image.
The caption makes the figure taller than the image. The current assertion allows a caption-height error to move the trigger into the caption while all existing assertions pass. For this fixture, the wrapper uses
display: contents, so the trigger should remain 16px below the image’s top edge.Suggested fix
const figureBox = await page .locator( '.wp-lightbox-container' ) .boundingBox(); + const imageBox = await image.boundingBox(); const buttonBox = await page .locator( 'button.lightbox-trigger' ) .boundingBox(); - expect( buttonBox.y ).toBeGreaterThanOrEqual( figureBox.y ); + expect( buttonBox.y ).toBe( imageBox.y + 16 );🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Thanks for the update. I think we can merge it once the conflicts are resolved.

There was a conflict while trying to cherry-pick the commit to the wp/7.2 branch. Please resolve the conflict manually and create a PR to the wp/7.2 branch. PRs to wp/7.2 are similar to PRs to trunk, but you should base your PR on the wp/7.2 branch instead of trunk. |

What?
Closes #82283
Places the Image block's lightbox trigger button against the
.wp-lightbox-containerfigure instead of the image's parent element, so the button stays in the corner of the image when a plugin wraps theimg. Why?
setButtonStylesmeasuredref.parentElement, which assumes theimgis a direct child of the figure. Plugins can wrap it: Modern Image Formats wraps it in a<picture style="display: contents">when its picture element setting is on. That wrapper generates no box, soclientWidthandclientHeightboth read0.The button then gets
right: -offsetWidth + 16andtop: -offsetHeight + 16, which lands it outside the figure and adds horizontal scrolling to the page.figure.querySelector( 'figcaption' )on the next line also returnsnull, so a caption's height is never subtracted.Reported downstream at WordPress/performance#1918
Follow up to #57089, which made the trigger button ref resilient to the same wrapping.
How?
Measures
ref.closest( '.wp-lightbox-container' ). That is the element the button is actually positioned against -.wp-lightbox-containerisposition: relativeand the button isposition: absolute- and it is always present, sinceblock_core_image_render_lightbox()adds the class. For an unwrapped image it resolves to the same node asparentElement, so nothing changes there.Testing Instructions
On trunk the button lands well outside the figure and the page picks up horizontal scroll.
The automated regression test covers the same thing without the plugin, using a small e2e plugin that wraps the
imgthe same way:Testing Instructions for Keyboard
Tab to the enlarge button on the published post. Focus should land on the button over the image rather than somewhere off to the side, and pressing Enter should open the lightbox.
Screenshots or screencast
Both shots are the full scrollable width of the page in a 500px viewport, with the
imgwrapped in apictureelement. Before - the button is 364px to the right of the figure, up beside the post title, and the page is 834px wide instead of 500px:
After - the button is back in the corner of the image and the page is 500px wide again:

Summary by CodeRabbit
<picture>element. The trigger now stays aligned over the image within its lightbox container, avoiding horizontal page overflow on smaller screens. Images without a matching lightbox container are left unchanged, preventing incorrect trigger placement. This ensures the lightbox control remains where visitors expect when the image markup is modified by a plugin.
