While this works, it will increase the number of requests each post-type list DataView page makes. Now each tab (status) makes a request to fetch only the total numbers; the rest is discarded. |

Fair point! seven tabs means seven requests, and it grows with Proposal: move it server-side. Endpoint: the existing Change: add a Why not a new endpoint:

Fixed in b249b39: the counts refresh when you come back to the list, and there's a publish-and-return test. |

@ciampo addressed the latest feedback, and the Core backport (WordPress/wordpress-develop#14070) is updated to match. Ready for another look when you have time. Thanks! |
…uses and partial requests
|
@ciampo addressed the partial bulk failure, and while reviewing my own changes I fixed a few more edge cases in the counts (37245e0), each with a test. One open question: counts currently refresh only after core's status-changing actions. Would you prefer they refresh after any action, so plugin actions are covered too? I'll sync the Core backport (WordPress/wordpress-develop#14070) once this settles. |
That sounds like a good improvement! > I'd refresh whenever That adds a request for actions that don't affect the totals, but avoids maintaining a list of core action IDs. Plugin actions still need to call the callback after their changes finish. Would be good to hear @oandregal 's opinion on this one, too |
Thanks! Made the change in 3db7456: the counts now refresh after any action, happy to adjust if you see it differently. |

Looks good,let's sync the core backport |

On an unselected tab on hover, the background changes while the count text stays the same, which could lead to inaccessible gb/fg combinations. Could we let the count inherit the tab color by default, and apply the muted color only when the tab is unselected, enabled, and idle? ie
.count {
margin-inline-start: var(--wpds-dimension-gap-xs);
font-variant-numeric: tabular-nums;
}
[role="tab"]:not(
[aria-selected="true"],
[aria-disabled="true"],

:hover,
:active,
:focus-within,
[data-focus-visible]
) .count {
color: var(--wpds-color-foreground-content-neutral-weak);

Done in c73380b: the count now follows the tab's colour and is muted only on idle, unselected tabs.

Mhh, maybe we can apply --wpds-color-foreground-content-neutral-weak also on the "selected" tab (published 2, in the screenshots above)

the selected tab's count is muted attached a screenshot above, and takes the label's colour on hover and focus

@ciampo addressed the feedback, ready for another look. Trac ticket: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/66362, milestone 7.3 since 7.2 Beta 1 is out. Would you mind owning it? Also, should I move the PHP and changelog from 7.2 to 7.3? |

Although I'll wait before leaving a formal approval until we have agreed the next steps in terms of release we're targeting and actions to take on the Core side.
@t-hamano maybe you can help to confirm next steps here?

As far as I can tell, the user-facing change in this PR is limited to the extensible site editor v2. The REST API would also return Since v2 is still experimental and isn't included in Core builds, backporting this to 7.2 wouldn't give Core users any visible benefit. It would only add the cost of the |

What?
Closes #80683
Adds an item count next to each status tab in the post list.
Why?
Users can't tell how many drafts or pending items exist without clicking each tab. Classic wp-admin shows these counts.
How?
