What?

Support multiple CollapsibleCard.HeaderDescription components and report invalid parent usage in development.

Why?

Every header description should contribute once to the trigger's accessible description, in visual order.

How?

Register description IDs with the header, then preserve and deduplicate any consumer-provided aria-describedby IDs.

Testing Instructions

Open Design System → Components → CollapsibleCard → With Header Description in Storybook.
Confirm the trigger is named “Settings” and described as “3 items configured”.

Testing Instructions for Keyboard

Tab to the header. Press Enter or Space and confirm the card toggles.

Use of AI Tools

Codex was used to implement and test this change.

Should we expose a Card.BodyText component? It may still be useful for folks

Is this proposed Card.BodyText mostly for text color? If so, another approach could be to set the color by default on Card.Content.

Both text color and typographic presets (ie the default Text).

I don't know if we can safely assume that all text in Card.Content should be of a lighter shade by default? (cc @jasmussen )

For now I went ahead and added styles to default text color in Card.Content to a lighter shade of gray.

Yeah, the more I think about this, I don't really understand why the card content should be weak to begin with. In the design system, weak is used in contrast with the normal color to de-emphasize. If we weaken by default, what will happen when Card needs to contain standard patterns (e.g. form controls) that rely on weak to de-emphasize certain pieces?

I wonder if at some point we confused the description text color with body color. Body color shouldn't automatically be weak just because it's in a Card.

I agree with the sentiment, and I'm actually going to:

remove the lighter default text color from Card stlyes

but also udpate the Storybook examples to use the default darker text color in the card body.

Feels like a safer default. We can always update after design specs are clear

But the card body, card content in general, I think of as very agnostic. I guess we know that in light mode, a card has a light background therefore the text should be dark. But I would expect it to be default dark, same text colour as every other text is by default.

Weak would only be for descriptions.

Thanks for the PR. At a glance, it looks valid enough. But the weirdness is also immediately evident: if you add both a header description and a card description, there's a curious duplicate feel, especially since there's no subheading and the text is muted help-text colour.

And although I'm not suggesting this as a blocker, it does give me pause that I'm finding it hard to discover other design system collapsibles that have a description in the header. The closest collapsible I found was this.

@lucyneb since I know you worked adjacentlly to this, do you have any additional context or inspiration?

@jasmussen Thank you, I hear your concern.

If the use case is simply a card with body description text, then I agree that adding a header description could look awkward. But again, my assumption was that these pieces would be optional.

To be fair, in our current work we only need a header description with narrow spacing 😃. We don’t even need a collapsible card necessarily, since for Settings it’s better to keep everything exposed. So if you think this doesn’t scale well, I trust your judgment.
And honestly, if we back up, @mattmiklic shared as of recent dataform card example, and it looks good. We can move forward with this and not complicate it, as I said, collapsable state is not something that is critical right now. I think the spacing between the header and description is a little large, but I see that the header has a set height, so we can leave it as is.

Let me know your thoughts, and thanks for your patience in this back and forth!

Thanks for the clarification. For all these reasons, I'd love to keep things simple to start, if that's genuinely a decent path forward.

But to be clear: your input is genuinely valuable and valid, I just want to make sure if we add a header description we do so because it's what we need, and we do it in a right way. For example if we can achieve the same by reducing the gap between headertitle and body description, that's probably an easy fix too.

Ok, let’s not add a description to the header then. We’ll reuse the current body description and adjust the spacing.

For the spacing change, does it need to happen at the component level, or do we have flexibility to adjust it on our end based on what works best for our use case?

@ciampo I know we went back and forth on this, but let’s keep things simple for now, as @jasmussen suggested. Thank you for your openness and flexibility on this.

@WordPress/gutenberg-components I still think it's valuable to merge this PR, as it includes:

some needed Storybook cleanup
better support for multiple HeaderDescription
better validation for HeaderDescription used outside of Header

We can remove the newly added Storybook example, and keep the rest?

Also, what do we think about potentially adding a Card.BodyText component? In the past we decided against it, since we thought that Card's content would be too custom to benefit from it. But I'm actually witnessing quite a few examples that end up needing such a component.

@lucyneb when you mention "adjust the spacing", what spacing are you referring to? I just want to make sure that you're not planning to override the default spacing between the card header and body?
