What?

Updates the /?_fields=... preload path in the @wordpress/build page templates to match the _fields list in packages/core-data/src/entities.js - adds image_max_bit_depth and image_strip_meta, which were added to the entity request in #80218.

Why?

Preloads are matched by exact URL, so the field list has to match what the client requests - same fields, same order - or the preloaded response is never consumed and the page issues a duplicate uncached request to / on load, along with an [api-fetch] [preload] Some preloads were never consumed console warning.

The same drift already hit the post and site editor preload paths in core; that half is fixed in WordPress/wordpress-develop#12665. The templates here generate core's wp-includes/build/pages/* files (font library, options connectors), which carry their own copy of the list, so this needs fixing at the source and will reach core with the next package sync.

I also updated the comment above the list to make the exact-match requirement (including order) explicit.

How?

The field list is a static string in page.php.template and page-wp-admin.php.template; both now match entities.js.

Testing Instructions

  1. Build and load a generated admin page (eg. the font library page) with the browser console open.
  2. Before this change the console logs [api-fetch] [preload] Some preloads were never consumed for the /?_fields=... request and the network tab shows a duplicate request to /.
  3. With this change, the preload is consumed and the duplicate request is gone.

The generated admin pages preload '/?_fields=...' so the initial site
entity request is served from cache. Preloads are matched by exact URL,
so the field list must match packages/core-data/src/entities.js exactly,
including order. Add image_max_bit_depth and image_strip_meta, which
were added to the entity request in #80218, so the preload is consumed
instead of the page issuing a duplicate uncached request.

A note on why the generated pages need this even though they have no client-side media UI: every page built from these templates boots through @wordpress/boot, and the boot router resolves getEntityRecord( 'root', '__unstableBase' ) on every route navigation (it's also selected for the document title). That request URL is built from the shared _fields list in packages/core-data/src/entities.js, so it includes the media fields regardless of what the page uses - and since preloads are matched by exact URL, the template list has to match entities.js exactly (same fields, same order) or the preload goes unconsumed and the page double-fetches /.

Worth noting the template list has always been a synced copy: image_sizes and image_size_threshold were added here by the same commit that added them to entities.js (2453663, #74566). It just drifted when #80218 added two more fields.

I'm not really certain we need client side media fields at all here, I'm going to dig in a bit more to understand how these fields are used.

I dug into this. The two generated pages in core are Appearance > Fonts (font-library.php) and Settings > Connectors (options-connectors.php), and as far as I can tell neither uses client-side media at all - the font library uploads through the fonts REST endpoints, not the media queue, and Connectors has no uploads.

The reason the fields still belong in the preload is that the request is shared, not per-page: @wordpress/boot resolves the __unstableBase entity on these pages (for the route title), and that request URL comes from the single _fields list in entities.js that every core-data consumer shares. The page winds up requesting image_max_bit_depth and image_strip_meta no matter what it does with them, and preloads only count when the URLs match exactly.

The unused fields are also basically free on these screens: get_index() only computes the image values when client-side media is enabled and the user can upload, so on these pages the extra names are just query-string bytes and the keys are absent from the response.

Making the entities.js field list context-aware would let these pages request a leaner set, but that feels like more machinery than two field names justify. I think this is good to go as is.
