What?

Follow up to #79105.

Restores a third party's keyboard, input and composition event handlers on a block, added through wrapperProps, which stop firing under editableRoot. Other handlers (pointer, clipboard, and so on) are unaffected.

Why?

Under editableRoot the writing flow wrapper is the editing host, so keyboard, input and composition events target the wrapper, not the block. A handler on the block element (e.g. added by an editor.BlockListBlock filter) sits below the target and never fires. This was raised in review of #79105: a third party can filter a block they don't own, so it can break through no choice of theirs.

How?

  • The block registers its wrapperProps handlers by client ID (useRegisterBlockEventHandlers).
  • The host resolves the block that owns the selection and its ancestors, and calls each handler innermost first, like a bubbling event.
  • Handlers receive a SyntheticEvent-like object built the way react-dom builds its own: a plain object wrapping the real native event, exposing exactly the interface React exposes for that event type and nothing more (anything omitted, like getTargetRanges, stays on nativeEvent, as in React). The host listens where React attaches its own event system (the portal container), so preventDefault and stopPropagation behave exactly as through React. Handlers are called directly, never re-dispatched, so nothing fires twice.

Only the events that retarget to the host are bridged, from an explicit allow-list: keydown, keyup, beforeinput, input and the three composition* events. These follow focus, which under editableRoot is the host above the block. Pointer and clipboard events follow the pointer or the selection, so they still land on the block and keep working untouched. The exception is focus / blur: there is one focus owner now, so a block never receives focus, and restoring it would mean synthesizing focus from selection changes rather than forwarding an event, which is out of scope.

It's a compatibility shim for third-party wrapperProps handlers; nothing in core relies on editing events reaching the block.

Testing Instructions

  1. Add an editor.BlockListBlock filter that sets wrapperProps={ { onKeyDown } }.
  2. Select a paragraph with sibling blocks so the wrapper hosts, and type. The handler fires.
  3. Have the handler preventDefault a key. That key is blocked.

Covered by e2e tests.

Restores block event handlers that a third party added through a
block's wrapperProps (e.g. via an editor.BlockListBlock filter).

Under editableRoot the writing flow wrapper is the editing host, so
keyboard, input and composition events target the wrapper, not the
block, and React on* handlers on the block element stop firing. The
block registers its wrapperProps handlers (useBlockProps), and the
host resolves the block owning the selection and its ancestors (from
the store, getBlockParents) and calls each handler.

Handlers get a React SyntheticEvent-like object: React does not export
a way to construct one, but its own is a thin wrapper over a native
event, so this replicates it over a copy of the event. Reads delegate
to the copy; stopPropagation is honored between ancestors and can't
reach core; preventDefault is mirrored to the original so the browser
and core honor it. isTrusted is false, as for any scripted event.

Handlers are read generically by prop name (onKeyDown handles keydown)
and stored in a WeakMap keyed by the block element, so an unmounted
block's entry is collected with its element without deregistration.
The host attaches a native listener per event type actually in use,
tracked append-only.

Only handlers on the block element (its wrapperProps) are covered,
which is the supported event surface; a filter that wraps the block in
its own element is not, and neither is block-owned handling (the block
adapts when it opts in). No event is dispatched, so nothing double
fires and there is no leak to document listeners.

Register the compat handlers by client ID instead of by element in a
WeakMap, and resolve ancestor elements through the existing block refs
map rather than querying the DOM. The host now takes the block hierarchy
from getBlockParents and the elements from refsMap, consistent with
useBlockRefProvider.

Return the cleanup from setBlockEventHandlers and build the event once
d5a60dd 
setBlockEventHandlers returns its own deregistration function, so the
register hook no longer imports a separate delete. The host filters the
ancestor chain to the blocks that actually have a handler and a mounted
element up front, then creates a single synthetic event for the whole
chain instead of lazily inside the loop.

Track new event types by set size instead of a flag

Set.add is idempotent, so noteEventTypes can compare the set size before
and after adding rather than tracking whether it grew with a boolean.

Bridge only a fixed allow-list of editable-root editing events

Replace the naive on-prop-to-lowercase derivation and the dynamic event
type discovery with an explicit map of the React on* props that
editableRoot redirects (keyboard, beforeinput, input, composition) to
their DOM event types. Only editing events are redirected, so only these
need bridging, and React prop names don't map to DOM types by lowercasing
(onChange is input, onDoubleClick is dblclick).

The host now attaches this fixed set of capture listeners once instead of
tracking types through an external store, and skips resolving the
selection unless some block has a handler. Only blocks with a handler are
registered.

Resolve the block client ID with getBlockClientId and bubble in one loop

Use the shared getBlockClientId helper instead of reading the data-block
attribute by hand, and walk the block and its ancestors in a single loop
that looks up each handler and only resolves the element when there is
one, reusing a single synthetic event across the chain.

Wrap the real event instead of a copy in the block synthetic event

Wrap the live native event rather than a constructed copy, like React's own
synthetic event does. The handler now gets a faithful event: isTrusted is
true, the native event has a real target, and getTargetRanges works for
beforeinput. preventDefault reaches the browser and core directly, so the
mirror step after the loop is gone; stopPropagation stays local to the walk
through block ancestors so it can't disturb core's own listeners. Only target
is overridden, because the real event targets the host above the block while a
handler expects the editable inside its block.

Listen in the bubbling phase to match a React on* handler

Register the host listeners non-capture, so a block's handler fires in the
bubbling phase like its React on* handler would, rather than in the capture
phase. The events we act on target the host node itself, so this doesn't
change when we run relative to core; it just matches React's semantics.

Attach at the portal container and forward stopPropagation like React

Attach the host listeners to the document element, where React attaches its
own event system for the iframe portal (see preparePortalMount in react-dom),
instead of the writing flow node one level below. Listening at React's own
node lets a block's handler run after core in the bubbling phase and forward
stopPropagation to the native event exactly as React does, stopping
propagation at the same point rather than cutting core's listeners below it.
stopImmediatePropagation stays unexposed, as on React's synthetic event.

Build the synthetic event by copying React's interface, not a proxy

Replace the forwarding proxy with what react-dom does: a plain object that
wraps the native event and eagerly copies the exact interface properties React
exposes for the event type. The handler now sees exactly React's surface and
nothing more, with anything omitted reachable through the native event as in
React (getTargetRanges on a beforeinput, for one). Native values are copied
directly, since React's normalizers only cover browsers we don't support.

Cover input and single delivery, drop onKeyPress and the dead fallback

Add e2e coverage for input events reaching a wrapperProps handler and for a
handler being called exactly once per event (no double delivery from React and
the bridge). Drop onKeyPress: it is deprecated and superseded by beforeinput.
Drop the unreachable EVENT_INTERFACE fallback, since every bridged type has an
interface.

Hold the block event handler registry in the BlockRefs context

Move the client-ID keyed handler registry off a module global and into the
BlockRefs context, next to refsMap, which the host and the registration hook
already share. The registry is now scoped per editor rather than global, with
no module-level mutable state; the host reads handlers and the "any handlers"
check from the context map.

Fold the event handler helpers into the host hook file

Move SUPPORTED_EVENTS, EVENT_TYPES and getEventHandlers into the host hook and
delete the now thin editable-root-event-handlers module. The registration hook
imports getEventHandlers from the host file, keeping the feature in one place.

Test single delivery on a non-editableRoot block, where it matters

The previous once-per-event test used a paragraph in host mode, where React
never delivers to the block, so a single call was guaranteed regardless of the
bridge. Use a heading instead: it does not support editableRoot, so React
delivers the event normally and the test actually checks the bridge stays out
of the way rather than doubling it.

Use the code block for the single-delivery test

The code block is plain text, not part of the rich-text writing flow, so it
will never gain editableRoot support, keeping the non-host premise of the test
valid. A heading could plausibly become an editableRoot host later.
