What?

This PR fixes a bug in the Block Editor where changing a design setting (such as text color) on multiple selected blocks completely overwrites their other distinct, non-conflicting style attributes (such as background colors, borders, and margins). This fix also applies globally to other nested object attributes, such as metadata and custom block configurations.

Why?

When editing multiple blocks, the settings sidebar renders controls populated by the active/primary block. Previously, when you changed a style, the intercepting setAttributes wrapper inside the BlockListBlock component would broadcast the primary block's entire updated style object to all other selected blocks.

Because the Redux store reducer only performs a shallow merge on top-level keys like style, it would overwrite the entire style object of the other blocks, erasing their defined unique custom styles (e.g. different custom background colors) and replace them with the primary block's values.

As mentioned by @t-hamano in the linked issue: "Changing one style may cause the related styles to be overwritten by all the styles in one block."

Additionally, this affects every other attribute change as well where nested values are thus overwritten irrespective of change diff.

For example:

Active Block 1: { style: { color: { background: '#ff0000' } } } (Red background)
Also In selection Block 2: { style: { color: { background: '#00ff00' } } } (Green background)

When updating the text color to white (#ffffff), the control sends the entire active block's style container i.e. :
{ style: { color: { text: '#ffffff', background: '#ff0000' } } }

Due to the shallow merge, this completely replaces Block 2's style object:
From: { style: { color: { background: '#00ff00' } } }
To: { style: { color: { text: '#ffffff', background: '#ff0000' } } } (Block 2's Green background #00ff00 gets overwritten with Block 1's Red background #ff0000).

How?

Added Diffing Utilities: Created two recursive helper functions - getAttributesDiff and applyAttributesDiff in packages/block-editor/src/utils/object.ts which determine the differences in attributes between two objects and apply only those specific diffs to the target object (supporting nested keys and handling deletion when values are explicitly set to undefined).
Updated the Multi-Selection Interceptor: Refactored packages/block-editor/src/components/block-list/block.js so that when multiple blocks are selected:
- It calculates the recursive diff of what actually changed between the active block's old and new attributes.
- Then we loop through all selected blocks and apply only that specific diff (instead of everything) to their current attributes.
- Finally updates all blocks in a single, performant transaction using updateBlockAttributes( clientIds, updates, { uniqueByBlock: true } ).
Tests:
- Added unit tests for both recursive helpers in packages/block-editor/src/utils/test/object.js.
- Added an integration E2E test in test/e2e/specs/editor/various/multi-block-selection.spec.js asserting that custom block backgrounds are preserved when text colors are updated during multi-selection.

Testing Instructions

Open the post editor.
Insert 3 Paragraph blocks.
Give Block 1 a Red background, Block 2 a Blue background, and Block 3 a Green background (using custom color codes).
Select all 3 blocks (via dragging or Shift+clicking or via List view blocks selection).
In the block settings sidebar under Typography, change the Text Color to a different color (like White).
Verify that all 3 blocks get the White text color, but retain their original backgrounds (Red, Blue, Green).

@Intenzi Would be ok if I rebase and add a couple of commits to your PR? It mostly looks good, but there's a small issue to fix with resetting values that are at the root of the attributes object that's not covered by this PR (it happens because of the way the block editor shallow merges block attributes updates).

If I don't hear from you, I'll go ahead and make a separate PR, but it might be good to merge this one seeing as you did most of the work (though you'll get props either way).

I've pushed some updates. It's a bit more than I originally intended, but it's a complicated problem and I wanted to make the code is as readable as possible.

There are a few small fixes over the original code:

Now handles unsetting values at the root level of attributes properly
Prunes empty objects
Avoids unnecessary updates (preserving references).

There's still some scenarios that are hard to solve. If we take two blocks that have the following:

Block A - { styles: { border: { top: 5px } } }
Block B - { styles: { border: { bottom: 5px } } }

There's two cases that can happen to unset border in a multiselection - either the user removes all border (using Reset), or the user only removes the top border. Unfortunately both are expressed as setAttributes( { styles: { border: undefined } } ) so it's impossible to distinguish the two. It happens because at the call site cleanEmptyObject is used to convert setAttributes( { styles: { border: { top: undefined } } } ) into setAttributes( { styles: { border: undefined } } ).

For border it might make sense to clear all the border. However if we take color:

Block A - { styles: { color: { text: 'red' } } }
Block B - { styles: { color: { background: 'blue' } } }

The update to clear the red text would be expressed as setAttributes( { styles: { color: undefined } } ). In this case we definitely want to preserve background, so it's what the code in this branch does.

I think this problem is only really fully solvable by updating everywhere that setAttributes is called, so we might want to do some followups to handle that (though I'm not sure how, probably reconsidering use of cleanEmptyObject).

If this ever changes - say we start using the last block instead of the first for whatever reason - could it break things here? Would it be worth having a test to catch that?

It shouldn't break things, as the code uses the props of BlockListBlock to get the attributes (const { clientId, attributes } = ownProps;), so it'll reflect whatever block of the multi block selection is being used.

This is probably for a follow up. I found the following...

Select the first paragraph. Add a custom color (non a preset)

Select the second paragraph. Add a preset (not a custom color)

Select all paragraphs. Change the color to a custom color.

A custom value set isn't clearing a preset slug on the other blocks

It looks like the preset classname and attribute are still applied, which overrides the inline style with !important

I'm not sure what the fix would be. A block support probably needs to somehow "know" about its corresponding preset.

Or, the hooks send only what changed, which is, I think related to Dan's comment.

The typography, colour etc panels and their hooks build the whole object and clean it... they don't tell anyone what's changed. So in the case above, the hook should clear the slug form and only send that:

I haven't spent much time looking into it, so might be wrong on the approach.

The call to setAttributes at step 3 is like this:

setAttributes( { fontFamily: undefined, fontSize: undefined, style: { color: { text: "#645e5e" } }, textColor: undefined, textShadow: undefined } )

So it does contain textColor: undefined, but the code in this PR discards it because the first block in the selection doesn't have a textColor set. It's a weird one, and I don't think it's solvable without broader changes. For example in this case we could choose to apply textColor: undefined to all blocks in the selection, but then we'd also have to apply textShadow: undefined to all blocks in the selection, so if any other block had text shadow it would be removed when setting a custom color 😄

To fix it we really need to update the design tools to deep merge attribtues and pass only the partial attributes value that needs to be changed across all blocks. Something like this:

setAttributes( { style: { color: { text: "#645e5e" } }, textColor: undefined, }, { deepMerge: true } )

I think I'll go ahead and merge the PR even with the known issues, as its better than what's in trunk.

It's probably best that the code drops any attributes its not sure how to apply across blocks (like textColor, textShadow etc. in this example), as it does currently.

If we ever get around to migrating all the top-level style attributes to live inside the style object, this may solve itself?
